A culture fixated on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, but an obsession about female obedience. Dieting is the most potent political sedative in women’s history; a quietly mad population is a tractable one.
Naomi Wolf, The Beauty Myth
Grammatically, there are various ways of describing what’s going on. One helpful set of terms is essential vs. nonessential. When the identifier makes sense in the sentence by itself, then the name is nonessential and you use a comma before it. Otherwise, no comma. That explains an exception to the only-thing-in-the-world rule: when the words “a,” “an” or “some,” or a number, come before the description or identification of a name, use a comma.A Bronx plumber, Stanley Ianella, bought the winning lottery ticket. When an identifier describes a unique person or thing and is preceded by “the” or a possessive, use a comma:Baseball’s home run leader, Barry Bonds, will be eligible for the Hall of Fame next year. My son, John, is awesome. (If you have just one son.)But withhold the comma if not unique:My son John is awesome. (If you have more than one son.)The artist David Hockney is a master of color. The celebrated British artist David Hockney is a master of color. And evenThe gay, bespectacled, celebrated British artist David Hockney is a master of color.(Why are there commas after “gay” and “bespectacled” but not “celebrated”? Because “celebrated” and “British” are different sorts of adjectives. The sentence would not work if “and” were placed between them, or if their order were reversed.)If nothing comes before the identification, don’t use a comma:The defense team was led by the attorney Harold Cullen.

No, not 'baby' anymore. If I need you I'll just use your simple name. Only kisses on the cheek from now on, and in a little while, we'll only have to wave.

Sunday School
In Russia, if you want to tell someone that s/he sucks at something, you ask, “Did you learn -blank- at Sunday school?” Kind of like, “Did you learn about gender rights and reproductive health at Sunday school?” I’m sure that’s the case in the Philippines.

Capitalism is bad for your health.
It horrifies me that gender change is perceived as a "clerical" (read: bureaucratic) inconvenience to the government. Why are "clerks" or this... structure held prior to a person's freedom and ability to determine her/his own political identity AND destiny? It's just too much for government to determine in this way what is erroneous and what isn't about who we are and who we want to be.
Taken from the House Bill:
No petition for correction of erroneous entry concerning the date of birth or the sex of a person shall be entertained EXCEPT if the petition is accompanied by earliest school record or earliest civil documents such as, but not limited to, medical records, baptismal certificate and other documents issued by religious authorities; NOR shall any entry involving change of gender corrected EXCEPT if the petition is accompanied by a certification issued by an accredited government physician attesting to the fact that the petitioner has NOT undergone sex change or sex transplant.

E-vehicle backers call for incentives
A published story I did on an electric vehicle conference I attended yesterday (7 March 2012).
The government must catch up with electric vehicle developments by lifting the tax burden on investments in the green transport sector, industry leaders yesterday said.
Government policies and programs, said speakers at a conference organized by the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC), are also key to spurring consumers and public transport operators to convert from fossil fuel-powered vehicles, which in turn will cut down carbon emissions.
“The government is two steps behind in helping the electric vehicles sector … What we need from the government is a serious partnership,” said Yuri P. Sarmiento, E-Jeepney Transport Corp. CEO.
He cited the lack of support infrastructure, inadequate policies, manufacturing constraints, and low social acceptance as barriers to the growth of the alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sector.
The government, Mr. Sarmiento said, can help by supporting a bill designed to give incentives to both electric vehicle makers and owners.
“We are not asking for the government to subsidize the cost of the electric vehicles,” he said.
Senate Bill 2856 is seen to bring down the cost of electric jeepneys, for example, by at least 20% by offering nine-year excise tax and duty exemptions to AFV assemblers and parts producers as well as importers of completely built AFVs.
The proposed bill will also exempt them from paying value-added tax on raw materials, spare parts, components and capital equipment used in the production of AFVs for nine years.
“An electric jeepney costs around P700-800,000 after all the taxes, but without taxes, it can be brought down to P400-500,000, which is the cost of a new fuel-engine jeepney,” Mr. Sarmiento claimed.
Owners of electric vehicles, meanwhile, under the bill will enjoy priority registration and franchise applications, exemption from the number-coding scheme and free parking spaces in select establishments.
“It’s a question of policies and incentives for developing the technology for electric vehicles. In the UK, we have free charging zones, so that’s a 100% discount for consumers right there,” said Garett Emmerson, chief operating officer of Streets and Traffic for London, in detailing the experience in Britain.
E-jeepneys, while requiring a hefty initial investment, will help drivers and operators of the public transport save money in the long term.
Fully charging the batteries for a 100-kilometer run will only cost P160-220, yielding a P12-P16,000 savings per month by eliminating fuel consumption, Mr. Sarmiento said.
“If you think about it, the savings from one month can send one child to school. That will help a lot of jeepney drivers with families,” he claimed.
Racism is NOT a Western concept.
It sounds vapid to me to admit that the FHM cover above is just insensitive and prejudiced, not racist.
It's implicitly racist, but it's more than just insensitive. What kind of prejudice is depicted?
Racial power relations is still embedded in neocolonial discourse. When you have internalized the ethics and standards of your former colonizer, you end up evaluating people "within" your group against these standards.
Besides, it's naive to claim that intra-ethnic relations can't be racist. What the hell is Filipino anyway?
I can easily claim that blacks in the US are Americans in the same way as whites in the US are also Americans. Hence, no racism between them. It sounds wrong. More than that, it sounds horrendously ignorant because of the history.
So we didn't inherit that same history from America. Racism in our context bears a different meaning, it's manifested in a different way -- but yes, it's influenced by Western definitions.
You can be racist against your own kind. Thandie Newton related once that some people thought she wasn't "black enough." Pure Chinese families discriminating against half-Chinese? Racism is about associating positive qualities with a supposedly favorable ethnic heritage and inferior qualities with a "less favorable" ethnic heritage.
Assuming but NOT conceding that all the models there are Pinays, the dark-skinned women are compared to shadows, which are often metaphors for something negative.
These darker "Pinay" models are considered the shadows that hold back the fairer beauty of the "Philippine ethnic heritage." Historically, we all know that many Filipinos are "mixed." What do you think this cover privileges? Clearly, "Filipinas" with an ethnic heritage that bestowed them fairer skin.
Here is another beautiful cat up for adoption!
London was four to five months old when he was rescued. He and his sibling were placed inside a plastic bag and abandoned under a parked car. If they were not rescued, they would most likely have been run over. They have now grown into loving kittens and are looking for a forever home.

“Mommy, they are just like me.”
My oldest son is six years old and in love for the first time. He is in love with Blaine from Glee.
For those who don’t know Blaine is a boy…a gay boy, the boyfriend of one of the main characters, Kurt.
This isn’t a ‘he thinks Blaine is really cool’ kind of love. It is a mooning at a picture of Blaine’s face for a half hour followed by a wistful “He’s so pretty” kind of love.
He loves the episode where two boys kiss. My son will call people in from other parts of the house to make sure they don’t miss his ‘favorite part.’ He’s been known to rewind it and watch it over again…and force other to, as well, if he doesn’t think people have been paying enough attention.
This infatuation doesn’t bother me or his father. We live in a very hip-liberal neighborhood, many of our friends are gay, and idea of having a gay son isn’t something that bothers either of us. Our son is going to be who he is, and it is our job to love him. End of story.
He is also six. Six year olds get obsessed with all kinds of things. This might not mean anything at all. We always joke that he’s either gay, or we have the best blackmail material in the history of mankind when he’s a 16 year old straight boy. (Take that naked bath time pictures!)
Then the other day we were traveling across the state listening to the Warblers album (of course), and in the middle of Candles, my son pipes up from the back seat.
“Mommy, Kurt and Blaine are boyfriends.”
“Yes, they are,” I affirm.
“They don’t like kissing girls. They just kiss boys.”
“That’s true.”
“Mommy, they are just like me.”
“That’s great, baby. You know I love you no matter what?”
“I know…” I could hear him rolling his eyes at me.
When we got home I recapped this conversation to his Dad, and we stood simply looking into each other’s eyes for a moment. Then we smiled.
“So if at 16 he wants to make a big announcement at the dinner table, we can say ‘You told us when you were six. Pass the carrots’ and he’ll be disappointed we stole his big dramatic moment,” my husband says with a laugh and hugs me.
Only time will tell if my son is gay, but if he is I am glad he’s mine. I am glad he has been born into our family. A family full of people who will love and accept him. People who will never want him to change. With parents who will look forward to dancing at his wedding.
And I have to admit, Blaine would be a really cute son-in-law.
