Pearlrose Week 2019: Day 3 - Confrontation
concept: willy wonka and harry potter take place in the same universe the ministry of magic haaaates Willy Wonka
âMr. Wonka,â Dumbledore smiled warmly, looking down into the Pit from his podium. The members of the Wizengamot muttered disapprovingly, shifting in their seats. Willy Wonka, clad today in a bright magenta suit and tophat, beamed cheekily up at them from his chair, his silver-gloved hands cradling his chin.Â
âMr. Dumbledore,â He replied brightly, with the barest hint of a lisp.Â
âI trust you know why you are here?â Dumbledores question was crisp and businesslike, but the twinkle in his eye gave away his amusement at the situation.Â
âNot at all! Iâve nary a clue,â Wonka wiggled his eyebrows. Dumbledore audibly stifled a laugh.Â
âYou are accused of improper use of magic, improper use of muggle artifacts, and several counts of using magic in front of a muggle,â Dumbledore reminded him. He conjured a projection with his wand. Displayed in grainy sepia was Willy Wonka, arm around a boy of around 10. Behind his back, he twitched an ash wand, and machines in the background around them whirred to life, producing all manner of sweets.Â
The projection ran its course and collapsed, and Dumbledore stowed his wand back inside his robes.
Wonka smiled and fiddled with his hat.Â
âHow do you plead?â Dumbledore asked, leaning forward eagerly for what would surely be an amusing trial.Â
âNot guilty on all counts,â Wonka said, perhaps a tad smugly.
The members of the Wizengamot muttered amongst themselves. Not Guilty? Impossible!
Dumbledore hushed them quickly. âExplain, if you would. We have, after all, quite a mountain of evidence.â
Wonka stood and brushed a bit of dust off his suit. He tipped his hat mischievously. âOf course,â he grinned.Â
âFirstly, use of magic shall only be considered improper whereby it is applied to cause harm or applied recklessly. All magic used in my sweets is rigorously tested for both safety and taste. It is not used to cause harm, but to bring joy.â Wonka paused to adjust his jacket.Â
âBut surely,â Dumbledore said, leafing through his notes, âyou cannot deny that you illegally charmed several thousand muggle artifacts?â
âAh, but I can,â Wonka said, now twirling his cap in his hands. âMuggle artifact refers, of course, to any muggle made object. But, you see, I built those machines, each and every one. They are not muggle machines at all, but wizarding machines, built by a wizard. The factory itself, as well. You could argue that, as machines are a muggle invention, I still broke the rules, but then I could argue that every wizard dwelling with any charms applied to its walls is in violation of the law, as muggles were the first to make bricks.â
The Wizengamot glared silently. He was right, of course. Violating the spirit of the law was not illegal if one followed the letter.Â
âAnd the last charge? These are definitely Muggle children, are they not? No magical talent, raised in muggle society?â Dumbledore straightened his glasses and peered down at Wonka, his eyes still bright with intrigue.Â
âNot at all,â Wonka grinned, placing his hat back on his head. âYou see, the ticket system was not nearly so random as I pretended. The tickets were charmed, they would only becomes visible to children with magical heritage. All the children chosen were second generation Squibs.â Wonka bowed low, as if he were finishing a particularly well executed play.Â
âWell, ladies and gentlemen, it seems no laws were violated after all.â Dumbledore stifled a grin at the groans of angry disapproval from the Wizengamot.Â
âBut he very clearly violated the intent of the rules!â Spluttered a large, rather red faced wizard in the second row. âHeâs justâŠcheating! Heâs cheating!â
âAh, this is true, but he did not, technically speaking, break any of the rules. He did not expose muggles to magic, nor enchant muggle made objects, nor improperly apply magic anymore so than any magical confectioner. Iâm afraid we have to let him go.â Dumbledore smiled gently and put away the rather thick file with Wonkaâs name embossed on the cover. For the brief second it was open, a list of hundreds of charges with âNot Guiltyâ inked beside them was visible. It was carried off by a house elf, and the Wizengamot began to file out until only Dumbledore was left.Â
âYouâre a very clever man,â He called down to Wonka. âWe could use you at Hogwarts, you know.â
âNo thank you,â Wonka called back, grinning. âSkirting the law is far more fun!â
Willy Wonka is a fucking Slytherin.
Iâd prevviously said âYes! Gene Wilder! Wonk!â. Now thereâs pics.
BUTâŠ
OMG.
MS. FRIZZLE! (and the MAGIC School Bus).
She must be before the Wizengamot ALL the TIME.
(Is her excuse; âWell, itâs educationalâ???? And it WORKS?!!)
Cornelius Fudge sighed and rubbed a hand over his face. Behind him, the members of the Wizengamot muttered amongst themselves, wondering what his next move would be. When he finally looked up from his podium, all he could do was glare at the chipper redheaded woman perched on the arm of the interrogation seat in the Pit. A bright green lizard poked its head out of the collar of her planet patterned dress and skittered around her shoulders to stare back at him.Â
âMrs. ValerieâŠâ He checked the file again. âFrizzle?â
âGood morning, Minister!â She replied happily, a hint of a laugh in her voice.Â
âItâs 3:30 in the afternoon, Madam,â He replied. He was tired.Â
âHere yes, but in America, its 10:30 in the morning! Arenât time zones incredible?â She smiled and he could see all her teeth.Â
Fudgeâs eye twitched irritably and he took a deep, steadying breath.Â
âDo you know why youâve been called before the Wizengamot today, Mrs. Frizzle?â He asked, shuffling the papers from her file.Â
âIâm probably in trouble,â she smiled serenely, absentmindedly petting the lizard. âThat is, after all, what the Wizengamot deals in!â
Fudge stifled a groan as he began leafing through her file. He didnât even know where to begin. âMrs. Frizzle, you are charged with no less than two hundred and thirty two counts of violating the Statute of Secrecy. Note that this is one count for each muggle known to be exposed to magic through your actions, and not a reflection of how many actions you have taken.â He drew out a page from the file. âActions that include unlawful use of a sentience charm upon a muggle bus, unlawful use on that same bus of indestructibility charms and some sort of curse or hex that made the damn thing not only unresponsive and utterly unusable to anyone but yourself and your students, but also made us unable to decharm, move or even hide it, several unlawful uses of shrinking charms, bubble head charms, transfiguration, and at least one unregistered charm of your own making that allowed you to leave the planet entirely!â He slammed his hand down on the podium. âDo you have anything at all to say for yourself?!â
Mrs. Frizzle smiled politely. âPrime Minister,â she said calmly, âWith all due respect, I have a question for you. Have you ever captured lightning in a bottle?â
âHave I- What?â Fudge spluttered, taken aback by her odd question.Â
âHave you ever captured lightening in a bottle?â She repeated, eyes flashing.Â
âOf course I havenât, what sort of nonsense-â He began, but she threw up her hand and interrupted him.Â
âMuggles have. Theyâve known how to use the same energy that comprises lightening to light their homes for over 100 years now. They can generate what amounts to lightening in a bottle with water, or the light and heat from the sun, or the wind. They can carry music in their pockets. They have been able, for nearly 30 years now, to leave the Earth and stand on the Moon.â Mrs. Frizzle straightened her dress. âI have, yes, been using my magic to help teach my students, but what Iâve been teaching them is science! Itâs a shame that we donât learn science as children the way muggles do. They know how the planets move! They know why the Earth turns! Muggles have a wealth of knowledge that rivals that of the centaurs, and we just,â She gestures around incredulously. âWe just ignore it! Did you know they are able to not only capture movement, but also sound on film? Itâs incredible!âÂ
Fudge waved a hand to silence the incensed grumbling of the Wizengamot. âMrs. Frizzle,â he hissed angrily. âIt does not matter how many trinkets and non-magical work-arounds the muggles have made, regardless of how incredible you find them. Their âscienceâ is not on trial here, you are, for exposing muggles to magic!â
âMinister, you do know my students are all muggle borns,â Mrs. Frizzle said, perhaps a touch angrily, her usual enthusiasm for science replaced by an anger at tech marvels being referred to as âtrinketsâ.Â
âTheyâre not the only ones who have seen yourâŠMagic Bus!â Fudge roared, slamming his fist on the podium and eliciting a dull rumble of approval from the Wizengamot. âMrs. Frizzle, since you have failed to mount a defense, we will now take a vote. All in favor of conviction?âÂ
A sea of hands shot into the air.Â
âAll opposed?âÂ
2 or 3 hands were placed waveringly in the air, then quickly fell.Â
âMrs. Frizzle, you are found guilty of 232 counts of breaking the Statute of Secrecy. The wand you surrendered upon entering the Ministry will be kept, and you are fined in the amount of 1,160 galleons. If you cannot pay this fine, you will be given a job on low level staff or doing community service until such time as the debt is paid. Good day.â Fudge closed her file and handed it the the Junior Undersecretary, who ferried it back to the Hall of Records.Â
Mrs. Frizzle stomped out, angry but not ready to give up. Luckily for her, they hadnât taken her backup wand. She had classes tomorrow, after all, and they couldnât very well explore the world of pollen without a proper shrinking charm. She made a mental note to stop by her cousin Xenophilliusâ house to pick up her backup to her backup. She loved his house. Shaped like a chess peice, can you imagine?
This is why the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is just soâŠ..dumb.
I think youâre all forgetting the obvious⊠Mary Poppins.
âBack again, Mary?â Dumbledore twinkled at the woman in the felt hat standing ramrod straight in front of the chair in the pit. Sheâd always been one of his favourite students.

Pearl Shattered Pink Diamond
So after the episode The Trial, I think itâs pretty clear who actually killed Pink Diamond. The Crewniverse is all about foreshadowing. Things have been foreshadowed or hinted at or left loose ended for sometimes anywhere between 50 to over 100 episodes.
Now, the show has been dropping hints literally since the series began that Pearl might have actually been the one to do the deed. But, I think that Zircon finally puts all the pieces together that were needed to confirm that it was Pearl.
Exhibit A:
âAll Gems have shapeshifting powers, Steven.â - Pearl, Cat Fingers (S1E6)
Well, thatâs really interesting Pearl. Really interesting that weâve seen Amethyst and Garnet and even Steven shapeshift, but never you. Do you have a traumatizing incident youâve been covering up for 5,000 years that might have something to do with that?
Exhibit B
âWell, if you ever want to see a demonstration of proper sword techniques, Iâd be happy to show you.â - Pearl, Steven the Sword Fighter
Weâve known for a LONG time that Pearl is a master with swords. And what shattered Pink Diamond? A sword.
âWho cares about her shield? Her huge sword is what I remember.â - Eyeball, Bubbled
âIt was a sword! YouâŠshattered herâŠwith a sword!â - Blue Diamond, The Trial
Itâs been mentioned a few times. Now, we ASSUME that it was Rose Quartzâs giant pink sword that Steven pulled from Lionâs mane. But, nobody has ever actually described it as such that was a witness. All that has been said is that it was a (huge) sword. That would be just the kind of thing the crew would use to try to throw us off the trail. Rose Quartz isnât even shown using a sword in The Answer, but Pearl wields two. She has been working with swords for seemingly far longer than Rose.
Exhibit C:
Thatâs an nice looking insignia you have on your uniform there, Pearl. Say, arenât you heading to Homeworld? Isnât it the proper thing to do there to show off your loyalty to your Diamond? Look at that Pink Diamond on your chest there.
Exhibit D:
âI was there. I saw it with my own eye.â - Eyeball, Back to the Moon
Now, at this VERY MOMENT that this line is stated, Eyeball is currently being duped into thinking Amethyst is Jasper, just because she shapeshifted into someone that looks like Jasper. Sheâs purple. Jasper is orange. Added to the baseball game the Rubies were also duped into playing, Rubies can be EASILY fooled. Even when it comes to the shapeshifting department.
Exhibit E:
Now, Pearlâs expression here could mean much the same as Garnetâs. Garnet didnât plan for Steven to find out like this. Neither did Pearl. But is Pearl, perhaps, much more worried that Steven will find out the REAL truth of who shattered Pink Diamond? Her reaction is just so much more dramatic, like her reaction is based on a different set of feelings than Garnetâs. Maybe this one is reaching a little bit, but letâs move on.
Exhibit F:
âDoes this have anything to do with Pink Diamond? I already know mom shattered her, so what is it about this that you canât tell me?â - Steven, Stevenâs Dream
âPlease, youâre making Pearl very upset.â - Garnet, Stevenâs Dream
Why would Pearl be so upset about Pink Diamondâs palanquin? Or about Pink Diamond being shattered? Sure, it was an awful event. But it was helpful to the rebels. And Rose Quartz did it, anyway, so why would Pearl have reason to feel bad or be overly upset about? I mean, it could be because she used to belong to Pink Diamond and betrayed her and shattered her, but you know, thatâs just a theory.
But you know, it would be really bad if Steven and the other Crystal Gems found out that not only did Pearl lie to them, but Rose Quartz as well. By the way Steven, your mom wasnât quite as horrible as you were told. By the way, that gem youâve been looking up to as the most mom like is the real shatterer.
Exhibit G:
âBecause at the time that Pink was shattered, Rose Quartz had been a recognized threat for several hundred years. There were no Rose Quartz soldiers in her entourage and none in her guard. So how did a Rose Quartz, with no business being anywhere near Pink Diamond, get so close to her in the first place? Where were Pink Diamondâs attendants, Her Agates, Her Sapphires? And where was her Pearl?â - Zircon, The Trial
It seems VERY significant that the crew would have that question be at the very end of Zirconâs line. Almost like they were trying to make it stand out on purpose.
But, much much more than that, Zircon stated that Pink Diamond had Sapphires on her court. Those who could see the future. Who would be looking into it for when and where Rose Quartz would strike next. Their focus would be on her. Their focus would be on looking towards outside threats to their Diamond.
Where would their focus not be? On the most trusted member of Pink Diamondâs court. The gem who was closer to her than any other gem, even a Diamond. Her Pearl.
Why would Homeworld even consider that a Pearl could think for herself? That a Pearl had the ability to shapeshift? They wouldnât know. And when the dust settled and all that remained was a shocked Pearl and no Rose Quartz⊠who would be called as the MAIN witness to the crime? The gem who would have been RIGHT be her side during the whole ordeal. Her Pearl. A gem known to be able to holographicly replay and recreate events. Someone who was already a record keeper.
Exhibit H:
âEven if she did, wouldnât her Pearl have cried out in her alarm, âWatch out, My Diamond!"â - Zircon, The Trial
Zircon is absolutely correct. Why would her Pearl have not been able to warn her? Even if all her guards and all her future seeking Sapphires somehow missed all of Rose Quartzâs planning and her sneaking up on them, why would the gem closest to her not give out any warning? But the line goes on to provide far more evidence.
âNo, whoever did this was already close to Pink Diamond. Someone her guards would allow to get near her, someone she would listen to when asked to stop her palanquin, and step outside, and someone with the authority to cover it up afterward!â - Zircon, The Trial
The only thing Zircon got wrong was the part about authority. A Pearl would have been a record keeper. Able to, as previously stated, replay the event of Pink Diamond being shattered in its entirety, from her own point of view. Able to muddle the details of the event, seeming as if she was watching it all happen in shocked horror, while quickly committing the crime herself, instead. Someone the Diamonds would have trusted to be truthful, because why would she lie about the oh so tragic death of her Diamond?
All eyes would have been on Rose Quartz. Nobody would have been paying attention to her Pearl. Nobody would ever pay attention to a simple Pearl. They are, after all, just Pearls.
Yet, who would have been closer but the Pearl traveling WITH her INSIDE her palanquin? Who might have suggested they stop, and who might Pink Diamond have listened to? Who would the Sapphires never have their future vision turned towards? And who could have flubbed the story to cover it up after?
Exhibit I:
âI want to hear what she has to say.â - Blue Diamond, The Trial
âHow? How did you do it?â - Blue Diamond, The Trial
âHow did you shatter Pink Diamond?â - Blue Diamond, The Trial
âBut the question no one seems to be asking is, "how?"â - Zircon, The Trial
"Iâve been asking that question.â - Blue Diamond, The Trial
THIS is why Blue Diamond is so adamant about knowing HOW Rose Quartz did it. Being able to slip past future vision and slip past guards was not built into the genetic make up of the Rose Quartz gems. How, then, did Rose come to possess such powers?! That is what is driving Blue Diamond crazy. But you know what? Rose Quartz didnât possess those powers. Because Rose Quartz didnât do it. Homeworld, the Diamonds, and even all the rebel forces on Rose Quartzâs side, were only meant to believe that she did.
Finally:
Consider that we know NOTHING of Pearlâs backstory. NOTHING. We do not know who owned her on Homeworld. We do not know when she rebelled.
Weâve gotten origin stories for Garnet and Amethyst, but Pearl remains shrouded in mystery despite us being 132 episodes into the series.
Why would it be such a secret if it wasnât a big deal? Her backstory has remained scarce, been dodged around, and avoided. Something very important to the series is hidden in her backstory, in her history. Something that I think is going to be revealed very soon.
letâs talk about the Pearls
because their behaviour in The Trial was fascinating to me
At first, we see them exhibiting all their usual stuff. YP is as flourishing and Extra as always, and while for the most part BP is her usual quiet self, we see her display the most actual personality ever as she grins while drawing âRose Quartzâsâ death
But the tricky thing with the Diamondsâ Pearls is that it is very, very hard to tell whatâs the real them. What are they really thinking, and whatâs a show they have to put on to avoid their ownersâ wrath?
Here, we see them lose their calmâ both of them, at the same time, for the same reason. And not because of a direct threat/insult, like Yellow Pearlâs flinching from Yellow Diamond in âMessage Recievedâ. Itâs a comment Blue Zircon makes:
âSo how did a Rose Quartz with no business being anywhere near Pink Diamond get so close in the first place? Where were Pink Diamondâs attendants? Her Agates? Her Sapphires? And where were her Pearl?â
They both immediately freeze. YPâs expression is terrified. She looks directly and BP, as if either afraid for her, or searching for reassurance or guidance. We donât know exactly what Blue Pearlâs expression is, with her eyes coveredâ but maybe fear too, or uncertainty, or surpriseâŠ
So the question is. Why?
1) Theyâre genuinely shocked. Theyâre so indoctrinated by Homeworld ideology that the thought that Pink Diamondâs Pearl didnât do anything to protect her is an accusation which strikes them to their core
2) Theyâre afraid their Diamonds will lash out at them as scapegoats. This episode made it painfully clear that YD especially is pretty trigger happy, so I wouldnât put it past her to occasionally strike out at blameless underlings
3) They know something.
This last one seems more likely to me. Because why else would they get so much focus? The question isâ what?
Okay. Let me split this up into sub-theories:
They (or one of them) witnessed Pink Diamondâs death, and they have information which could explain the discrepancies Blue Zircon brought up. However, they never divulged it for whatever reason. (Possibly because, if there was a cover up, they could be at risk if the did). Now it might come out accidentally, and they could take the fallout.
One or both of them helped orchestrate Pink Diamondâs assassination, either directly or indirectly. The main issue is the question of how an obvious criminal like Rose Quartz could have gotten close enough to Pink Diamond to kill her. Pearls would have a great insight into how all the court hierarchies work. Since theyâre considered to be basically dim-witted furniture, theyâre pretty easily ignored. Combine this with abilities such as holographic projects, perhaps they could have found a way to smuggle Rose Quartz (or the true killer) close enough.
Another Pearl was directly involved in the smuggling and killing of Pink Diamond. While they didnât plan it, BP and YP helped her (and any allies e.g. Rose Quartz) escape, because of Pearl Solidarity
HmmâŠ. but who could this other Pearl be⊠If only there was another Pearl in the show⊠a known rebel⊠whoâs past history with Homeworld is shrouded in mysteryâŠ
Ah. Yes.
Now, Iâll admit, I donât know exactly how Pearl exactly fits in. Rose Quartz being the killer seems important for the Arc of Steven coming to discover that his Momâs past actions werenât all sunshine and daisies, and the further arc of him realizing that maybe sometimes violence/shattering is necessary or justified. So maybe she just helped sneak Rose in, even if she didnât deliver the killing blow herself.Â
Although, if Pearl was the culprit, that might give even more impact to her expression when Steven discovered what happened to Pink Diamond in âBack to the Moonâ
Admittedly, this can easily just be Pearl saddened that Stevenâs discovered the truth. That the perfect image of his mother, the person Pearl loved and respected more than anyone else, has been broken. That his innocence has been lost.
But if she was responsible, it could also be fear that Stevenâ who is innocent, who still values the lives of everyoneâ would reject her if he discovered she was the one who did it.Â
(Also, consider Pearlâs claims of being Roseâs sole confidant, the one who knows everything⊠The only one who knew the truth of Pink Diamondâs shattering.)
âCourse, weâve got the little problem here that all eye witness accounts say that Rose Quartz killed Pink Diamond. As you might have noticed, Pearl looks absolutely nothing like Rose.
⊠but hey. How about shapeshifting? You know. That thing Pearl swears she can do, but that weâve never seen her demonstrate in 132 episodes? This would be a pretty significant demonstration. And the trauma of using it for such a thing could explain why she hasnât wanted to use it since.Â
(Not sure why Pearl would have felt the need to disguise herself as Rose Quartz. Maybe it was because she knew all the other RQs got captured and bubbled for Roseâs rebellion, so Pearl was protect her fellows from a similar culling. Or maybe she thought showing the leader of the rebellion dealing the finishing blow would make a stronger image. idk)
That said, again, I still really am fond of Rose being responsible⊠so maybe we can split the difference and put the death on Rainbow Quartz? That would be rad too.
basically itâs all a mystery and iâm not sure where itâs going, but the Pearls almost definitely have some clue
Letâs end this on their worried faces
