When I DO get a dog, I want to get a male poodle so I can buy him a pink or floral collar. It’s part of my dastardly scheme to oppress straight people and erode the social order.

I tried to buy a harness for Crime Dog last year and the PetSmart employee kept trying to push a pink one on me instead of the gray one I picked out because my girl dog “would like pink better”.

I told her my dog was pretty butch, actually, and bought her a red plaid kerchief just to be petty.

I’ve had at least three separate people get Seriously Upset about bows and flowers on my male poodle’s ears.  It’s baffling!

He’s a dog!  His gender identity is dog!

Hotdogs are not an appropriate prey for your snake.

Not even as a first meal to get them eating for the first time.

The fact I even am saying this with seriousness right now is bewildering. The fact that people are actively doing this is astounding.

So I’ve never owned a snake or anything and I don’t know much about reptiles, but one thing has occured to me lately; it seems a lot of pet shops will refuse to sell mice and rats etc to people if they believe it’s to be used to feed a snake, so where so snake keepers generally get their food for their animals? Are there people that specifically breed and sell mice and other similar prey animals to be eaten? This is something I’ve been curious about for a while but I always feel unsure about bringing up.

Pet stores sell frozen and/or pre-killed rodents to be used for pet food. Live feeding is dangerous to the reptile and is cruel to the rodent and I have zero issue with pet shops refusing to sell pet rodents to people with the intent to use them as live food. 

ln certain states in Australia it is furthermore illegal to live feed.

Certain snakes are known for being picky eaters and will only eat live mice though.

This is absolutely true. Not all species or individuals will learn to eat live prey. Assuming all animals will switch is ignorant and detrimental, as refusing to feed the animal what it needs to survive is cruel to begin with.

Im not gonna try to address the misconception of how feeding live is "cruel." That's downright misinformation, and backed by what appears to be little to no experience keeping rats and snakes. 🤷‍♀️

Live feeding is absolutely cruel to the rodent, and can be incredibly dangerous to the snake if not performed correctly. Yes some snakes will refuse frozen mice but that doesnt mean people who would prefer to feed frozen will fucking starve them.

Yknow i wasnt going to reply but now I am because the tags are a joke and rife with misinformation.

First of all, bites from rodents can cause harm, however if you have feeders that are reacting by biting, you need to find yourself a better and more responsible feeder breeder. I *knock on wood* have not had a rat bite myself or my snake in years because I carefully select my breeders for their reactivity. If their reaction to pain or fear is to bite, they're culled. I know this because I pick them up with my bare hands and they're rats so anything startles them. I'd definitely know before putting them in with my snakes.

Secondly, the animals ARE NOT BEING EATEN ALIVE. Constriction is effective because it immediately cuts off blood flow, causing the animal to rapidly become unconcious, and then stopping their heart. Loss of consciousness happens within seconds, and once the animal is killed it is then eaten. If a snake were to try to eat wiggling, still alive prey, it would risk damaging itself. On the occasion you do have an idiot snake who would try to eat live, obviously you should choose f/t for the snakes safety and the prey.

Finally, theres a mountain of evidence that questions just how "humane" co2 euthanasia is.

Co2 causes the animals to stress out for sometimes minutes before losing consciousness. This is compared to constriction, which is seconds.

Furthermore, rapid CO2 euthanasia can cause extreme pain and suffering without unconsciousness. Few people who do breed at home understand just how to euthanize correctly. They think that if they dump CO2 in a chamber, the 30 seconds it takes for them to pass is a humane death. That is considered cruelty by the AVMA. With rapid increase of co2 carbonic acid forms in the rats respiratory passages causing pain as their mucus membranes explode.

There are other alternatives to euthanasia, such a cervical dislocation, but none of the mass rodent producers are going to sit there and CD your order of 50 f/t rats for ya. Sorry to say, they're all co2 euthanized.

And finally, I was addressing the necessity to feed live because the second reply mentioned it is a necessity. I was backing it up. Dont try to presume you know anything about my knowledge by insinuating I think people who prefer to feed f/t would starve their animals. I feed f/t, prekilled, and live in this household. I think I have some practical and studied knowledge on this subject.

For the record, some misinformed keepers absolutely have starved their snake because they didnt want to feed live. I know because IVE REHABILITATED THEM.

Dog Park drama: somewhat of an update

Eda got into a fight with another dog at the park tonight. The worst I've seen, though I've only seen her actually get aggressive a handful of times. Stranger dogs, a yellow fluffy one who did the actual attacking and a black short haired husky that the owner kept on a leash while yelling at his other dog to try and get him to stop. We managed to pull them apart and I extracted Eda from the park. My friends told me this was not the first time they have had issues with this dog or this owner. Later I found a big scratch on Eda's side. Thankfully not bleeding. I cleaned it a little, took pics, and emailed the front office. I don't know what will happen, if anything. I told the office because I felt like I had to. Everyone else there agreed my dog was not the problem. I don't know if Eda hurt the other dog, but she did have a tuft of fur in her mouth. I feel terrible. I feel terrible she got hurt and that this happened and that it could become a whole thing with the apartment. I feel terrible if Eda did hurt the other dog because even though that dog attacked mine, I don't think it is the dog's fault. I don't blame the dog. I blame the owner. And I know the owner probably blames me and Eda too.

I’d be happy to use Willows very low bark to scare any intruder off before they got in my house, but I wouldn’t let her anywhere near them if they were in my house. (Partly because she wouldn’t do shit apart from bark)

I am jealous of everyone whose dogs will alarm bark. Happy has zero barrier aggression/frustration in that regard. She doesn’t bark when people are at the door, she usually doesn’t even get up lmao. While it’s nice that she’s mostly quiet, it would also be nice if she did big deep barks to let the world know there’s a dog inside. To me, that’s the useful aspect of a dog’s “protection.”

Both of ours will bark. Sparta barks when someone passes the living room window, which out upstairs landlady has actually come to appreciate. 

As for actually *doing* something? Luna has had strange men coming and going through our house many many times when we’re not home. Local plumbers and electricians will, at this point, make errands into our kitchen in order to say hello to the dog.

Noodle will alarm bark. Ani and Balto will get up to party, Hubble gives zero fucks. Noodle will ONLY bite if being handled and even then I’ve worked with her so much its more like *pterodactyl scream* *snapping at the air* We’d all be dead, but I’d go first protecting them all. Take all my stuff but think about touching my dogs and I. Will. Murder. You.

Eda might alarm bark. Hard to tell. She really only barks at the dog park, and usually only because other dogs are barking. She is just trying to fit in!

However, I would DEFINITELY know if someone was here. She will get out of bed and just stand there and I can sense her anxiety. It is usually how I wake up in the morning, I can feel when she is needing to go pee. She might whine a bit, but usually there is just some restless pacing. Utterly quiet, since she doesn’t sleep in her collar, but I always know.

The world is not kind to cats

It was a bad time to be an outdoor cat.

The cat doesn’t understand why its human is sad, just that they are, and their legs don’t work.

The cat doesn’t understand that its pelvis has been crushed like a coke can and that recovery would require multiple thousands of dollars for surgical repair and would more than likely result in chronic, lifelong pain from an intra-articular fracture (through the joint surface).

The cat doesn’t understand the repeated insistence that “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” over and over again, nor does it understand that its only had one year of life, when it could have had fifteen.

But the human, the human understands that the cat’s life is about to be tragically cut short, thanks to the massive trauma sustained from the car when the cat just didn’t come home one night.

“Who did this to you?” the human asks, over and over between their apologies and tears.

And the vet knows they’re lucky their cat came home at all to say goodbye. And the vet knows in her heart which human it is that’s responsible for this outcome, and it wasn’t the one driving the car.

The next consult is so understanding about the wait. They know what it’s like to loose a cat. Theirs didn’t come home one day, at only four years old. And other cats that used to visit their backyard disappeared around the same time.

They always suspected someone had poisoned them, put paracetamol into saucers of milk and left it out to get rid of the cats.

The new cat, this one will be indoor only. Maybe on a harness if it shows interest in the outside world.

The world that should only be visited under supervision. Because the world is not kind to cats.
