"Used to be a cop," repeated the detective, with an irritated hum. March knew this was one of the bigger cases he was tapped for, but Jesus Christ was this guy a pain in the ass. Hopefully he wouldn't have to badger him for much longer. 450 dollars, March. Just think of the 450 dollars; and then some.
Plucking the cigarette from between his lips, March tapped his index finger against its tip; ash snowing down upon the sticky tabletop. "You know what the beauty about being a P.I. is, pal?" Besides calling the shots on his own contract, of course. "It's knowing things before anyone else does. So, here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna go ahead and lay out the facts for you."
"Fact number uno--" He raised a finger. "--I may not be sure who you are, yet, but I know for a fact that somehow you are tied to the sudden disappearance and murder of Frank Chambers. Now, I didn't know Frank personally, but my employer seems to place importance on trying to figure out whatever the hell happened to him. Fact two--" Second finger. "-- Eye witness accounts and DNA samples all point to you being in the area on the night of the fifth, the evening of Chambers's murder." And fact number three--" A third finger. "--I caught wint that in about four minutes, three rather terrifying, burly men-- walking skyscrapers, really-- are going to come through that door, pull you aside, drag you off into an alleyway, and beat the daylights out of your sorry ass. Now, I usually don't want to step in and get involved when it comes to suspected perps-- natural selection and all that-- but if getting your ass out of here and to another location is what it takes for me to get the information I need so I can call it 'Pay Day' then so be it.--So, what's it gonna be pal?"
The second the other said ‘used to be a cop’, Lenny was already shifting to get out from behind the table. Screw this. He didn’t have time for this man’s bullshit, he had business to do! Then again, it was somewhat fascinating to listen to him ramble on about things he had no clue about.
Lenny stopped and frowned, watching as the other laid out ‘the facts’. He shook his head, then held up one finger. “One: I don’t know anything about a Frank Chambers. Two,” he held up the second finger, copying the other's gesture, “if you don’t know who I am, how the hell do you link me to that murder?” The frown deepened. Then he turned to look over his shoulder to the door. There was no one coming for him, right? The P.I. was bluffing. Then again…there were constantly shady guys coming for Lenny. It was somewhat of a daily occurrence these days.
He turned back around to March. “You want me to believe you? What makes you think anyone is looking for me? Pal?” Really, what was his problem?
