His eyes narrowed at the other man. Was he always that annoying and planless? “Wait.” Lenny lifted both his hands, chuckling. “So you’re not a cop?” Of course he wasn’t. Probably would like to be one, though.
“That means I don’t even have to talk to you.” He pointed with his index finger from himself to the other – whose name he didn’t even know, Lenny just realised. Really, who the hell was that guy?? “Or answer your dumb questions.” He cocked up an eyebrow. “Right?” So…that meant he could just stand up and leave. But there were still potential customers in the bar he needed to have some business chat with. So this strange P.I had to go. But something told Lenny it wasn’t going to be so easy to get rid of him.
"Used to be a cop," repeated the detective, with an irritated hum. March knew this was one of the bigger cases he was tapped for, but Jesus Christ was this guy a pain in the ass. Hopefully he wouldn't have to badger him for much longer. 450 dollars, March. Just think of the 450 dollars; and then some.
Plucking the cigarette from between his lips, March tapped his index finger against its tip; ash snowing down upon the sticky tabletop. "You know what the beauty about being a P.I. is, pal?" Besides calling the shots on his own contract, of course. "It's knowing things before anyone else does. So, here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna go ahead and lay out the facts for you."
"Fact number uno--" He raised a finger. "--I may not be sure who you are, yet, but I know for a fact that somehow you are tied to the sudden disappearance and murder of Frank Chambers. Now, I didn't know Frank personally, but my employer seems to place importance on trying to figure out whatever the hell happened to him. Fact two--" Second finger. "-- Eye witness accounts and DNA samples all point to you being in the area on the night of the fifth, the evening of Chambers's murder." And fact number three--" A third finger. "--I caught wint that in about four minutes, three rather terrifying, burly men-- walking skyscrapers, really-- are going to come through that door, pull you aside, drag you off into an alleyway, and beat the daylights out of your sorry ass. Now, I usually don't want to step in and get involved when it comes to suspected perps-- natural selection and all that-- but if getting your ass out of here and to another location is what it takes for me to get the information I need so I can call it 'Pay Day' then so be it.--So, what's it gonna be pal?"

"What are you the fucking Riddler? Why are you hitting me with this namby-pamby, Shakespearean bullshit right now? Besides, if I were you it wouldn't be my blood I'd be worrying about right now," tut the detective, stealing a huff from the cigarette wedged between his lips.
"Look, man, it's been a long day, okay? And I'm gonna be honest, the last thing I wanted to be doing on a Friday night was dealing with some wise-cracking hippie, alright?" March motioned to the other with a nonchalant wave of his hand. "Just talk like a normal human and tell me what I want to know; how did you know the guy? Why were your prints at the scene of the crime? Also, who exactly are you?" The detective stole a beat while he carefully considered his words. "... Maybe-... Maybe try to answer those questions in reverse." Right. Names. He should always start with a name.
Lenny stared at the other man. What the hell was this guy's problem? Was he really a cop? He knew them; shit, he had been one! Though in narcotics, not homicide. Still. Cops were all the same damn bunch, and this one...just didn't seem like one.
"Are you sure you're a cop?" Lenny asked, frowning. "Look, man, I really don't have time for this, okay? I...got places to be."
"P.I. Not a cop.-... I mean, I used to be a cop, but I'm not anymore, and anyway it's a long fucking story--" And one March honestly had no patience for at this time; or any time, really. "Yeah? And I got two bottles of Jack Daniels with my name on it" and a fat stack of cash. Four-hundred and fifty dollars, to be exact. "--so why don't we cut the crap so that I can get back to my life, and you can go back to whatever 'Love and Peace-Yippie-Protest' you're part of."
"If you're not gonna answer my questions, try this one on for size; what do you know about Frank Chambers? And how exactly are you connected to him?"

“Haven’t seen you in this hole for a while… who’s missing today?”
“You detectives are always so serious.”
“You were seen at the scene of a murder last night and I want to know why.”
“There’s a hurricane coming for you, detective.”
“I need your help finding someone. It’s important.”
“Your case is low priority, there are other things I need to do first.”

“This city’s a hard place to live. Don’t let it change you.”
“If you want to be one of us, be ready to leave your family and friends behind. People will hurt them to get at you if you keep them close. It’s just how things are.”

INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989) PROMPTS * assorted dialogue from the film, adjust as necessary
i hate these guys.
this is a new experience for me.
it happens to me all the time.
you lost today, [name]. but that doesn't mean you have to like it.
may we go home now, please?
i've got a lot of fond memories of that dog.
he sticks out like a sore thumb. we'll find him.
does anyone here speak english?
what are you hiding?
archaeology is the search for fact, not truth.
forget any ideas you've got about lost cities, exotic travel, and digging up the world.
we do not follow maps to buried treasure, and "x" never... ever marks the spot.
70% of all archaeology is done in the library. researching. reading.
we cannot afford to take mythology at face value.
help me get us out of here.
are you kidding? i made all that up.
she talks in her sleep.
try not to talk.
give me your other hand. i can't hold on.
i can get it. i can almost reach it.
[name], let it go.
those people are trying to kill us.
i didn't know you could fly a plane.
our situation has not improved.
i'm as human as the next man.
i'm like a bad penny, i always turn up.
throw down the gun or the girl will die.
no! don't shoot!
please do what he says!
[name], what are you doing here?
head for the fireplace!
why are you sitting there resting when we're so near the end?
don't look at me like that.
i would have done anything to get it. you would have done the same.
i'm sorry you think so.
i'll never forgive myself.
thank god... it's fake.
look, can we discuss this later?
i came here to save you!
look what you did! i can't believe what you did!
i'll never forget how wonderful it was.
you have chosen wisely.
did you intend to leave us standing on the doorstep all day?
now look, i've gone and caught a sniffle.
don't take that tone with me!
this is the second time i've had to reclaim my property from you.
that belongs in a museum.
why are you trying to kill us?
my soul is prepared. how's yours?
what have you brought?
i'm sorry about your head. i thought that you were one of them.
you came back for the book?
is that what you think of me?
who gives a damn what you believe?
follow me. i know the way.
i find that if i just sit down to think... the solution presents itself.
in this sort of race, there's no silver medal for finishing second.
we didn't talk. we've never talked.
what are you complaining about?
you could go down in history.
you're going the wrong way.
the pen is mightier than the sword.
are you crazy? don't go between them!
my reputation preceeds me.
it would make me very happy.
shooting me won't get you anywhere.
we're well out of range.
you call this archaeology?
we are on the verge of completing a quest that began almost two thousand years ago.
we're just one step away.
since i've met you, i've nearly been incinerated, drowned, shot at, and chopped into fish bait.
we're caught in the middle of something sinister here.
you're a great deal like your father.
how dare you kiss me.
leave me alone. i don't like fast women.
you say this has been just another typical day for you, huh?
you're meddling with powers you can't possibly comprehend.
if only i could have been there with you.
"It'll be our little secret." She assured him with the same smile. It was easier than expected to turn the table around. Then again, a little violet persuasion alongside money dangled in front of a poor man was inevitably going to work wonders.
Sofia nodded at his proposal. It was nowhere near what actual career criminals would want. She really was corrupting the man. She would have felt guilt were it not for the humour she had found in it all.
"Now, now, you wouldn't be breathing if I meant to actually harm you." She gestured at his face, though there was a trail of blood coming from his nose and leaking down his face and lips. Reaching for her handbag she rifled inside until she procured handkerchief, handing it over to the detective. With the other hand, she reached for the man's hand, giving it a firm shake.
"Pleasure doing business with you, Mr March."
She disappeared behind the desk to open up the safe again, reaching for the gun to store it safely away again as well as bring out a wad of cash. It landed with a thud on the desk.
"I have 2K here to get you started. Come back here tomorrow at 4pm. I'll have the rest and we can talk business."
"Well, don't I feel lucky," he grumbled, rather irritably snatching the handkerchief and lightly pressing it against his nose. If what she said was true, and a part of March didn't doubt it, perhaps it paid to have a woman like Holst on his side. One of those 'keep your enemies close' sort of situations.
The detective procured the wad of cash the minute it hit the table, pretending to cooly count the dollars in his hand, as if scouring them for some sort of error. "Yeah, sure, whatever, I'll be there.-- Before I go, I want to get one thing clear, sweetheart. We may have this deal, but don't think I'm going to be at your beck and call, capiche?"
---------------------------------
Holly, right on the dot, badgered her father about the case and his bruised nose that evening. Usually, March was quite open when it came to sharing the details about the recent case he was on with Holly. Hell, there were times he would even ask her to drive him over to the client's home. But this? This was different. The less she knew the safer she'd be. Besides, as long as they had the money, all would be right in the world. "I told you sweetie, everything's fine, I'm handling it, alright?" Could he, he thought to himself. Could he actually handle whatever it was Holt wished for him to handle?
The next afternoon, a little past four, March met Her at their rendezvous. "So, what horrors do you have in store for me today? Oh, and it's not broken by the way, thanks for asking," he motioned to his now cleaned up nose. "--just had some slight swelling last night, but, hey, at least I'm breathing right."

Sofia's smile curled wickedly. Her confidence oozed out of her when her confidence was vindicated. Of course he'd take the offer.
"I threatened nobody." Except the man himself with a gun, of course. "I just told you what, or who I know." She said flippantly. "Yes, but I also inherited his reputation, you see. People might not say it, but they know who I am. More importantly, who my father is." And her mother, but she didn't know how much the detective knew at that point. "You have nothing to do with me, no connection. You have good observation skills, clearly. If you work for me, that's one less person trying to fuck my family over. Plus, you're easy on the eyes." She teased.
"Name your price. I can pay in cash." Her tone was casual, letting the man take the bait. She did always like a man eating out of the palm of her hand.
"That's sweet that you don't just think I'm a pretty face," he muttered dryly. The cogs in his head were turning as his blue gaze scanned her face for any hint of dishonesty. She may have been a criminal, or at least her bloodline was entwined with a family of them, but oddly enough, not even a flicker of a lie. 'Am I a good man?' The question pressed upon the confines of his mind. March knew that the resounding answer was no, and it had been that way for a very long time. Holly knew it too.-- While the initial case to gather intel on the Holsts was set up by his buddies back on the force, a job well done did not guarantee a more permanent spot. Hell, March wasn't blind. He knew half those boys were hardly saints; and neither was he. Why should he start now? And, most importantly, lord knew he needed the money. He desperately needed the money, actually.
"If I agree to do this, I want your word that Holly will be safe, you understand? You do not mention her again, and I don't want her dragged into any of this. I also don't want any word of this getting out. This is between you and me."
"Now, seeing that you want me for my premium services, I would usually charge a high-end client, like yourself, a retainer of 5K. But, seeing that you did point a gun at my head, and potentially dislocated my nose, the price has wracked up to 7K."
"So, 7K as a retainer--which will most likely go up a couple of bucks, depending on the job you want me for-- plus my terms." A hand extended towards the other. "Take it or leave it."

Sofia smirked. She knew she would get what she wanted.
"I'd ask if you were happy to see me but the joke's too obvious, right?" She teased as she was released from the hold. Brushing and straightening up her dress, she moved to the side to perch on the corner of the desk.
"Whatever you're being offered, we'll pay double." She said matter-of-factly. "Clearly you're an observant man - even if the obviousness of your presence leaves much to be desired. You can go places a lot of us can't. Maybe just blend in a little better." She waved at the gaudy shirt under the suit. "You could be a valuable asset, Mr. March. Surely that's better than blowing each other's brains out?" Her words choice, provocative. She knew how to get a point across.
"Oh, don't try to be cute now," tut March, pointing warning finger up at her. He hated the fact that, if this had been any other situation, that would have absolutely been a joke he would've made.
"Y'know what, lemme' think about that for a moment. Joining the dark side but getting paid a crapload of money--" he unfurled one of his palms. "--Or blowing each other's brains out" he uncurled his other palm. Pursing his lips, he mimicked weighing the mass of each option, before cooly leaning against the nearby wall, arms now crossed against his chest. "I'll take door number one."
"Although, I still need some convincing; you did after all just threaten my daughter. I need to know three things.-- First, how can I trust that this isn't some sorta' trap? Second, how exactly would I be a valuable asset? I assume you inherited daddy's money and power. Why can't you get to these places yourself?" Surely, she was used to a little nudge and trade under the table. "--And most importantly, when you say double, how much would you hypothetically be willing to pay? I don't come cheap, y'know."
Don’t use AI to write. Use childhood trauma like a real poet.
Are you okay? Yeah.
THE NICE GUYS (2016) dir. Shane Black
Well that touched a nerve. Sofia was thrilled.
She was pinned up against the wall with a gun pressed right up against her. She really shouldn't have been smiling the way she was.
"You know things, I know things too." She said matter-of-factly.
It was cute how easily he had switched up again, especially when it came to his daughter. She knew all about protective fathers.
"Oh, now, would it really be wise to shoot me?" She was confident. So confident she clicked the safety on her own pistol and dropped it to the ground, hands raised, fingers fluttering before the detective. "If I am found dead, Mr. March, you will never know peace. I'll be long gone, but rest assured, you'll remember me. My father is a big believer of 'an eye for an eye'." Her voice was saccharine, finger and thumb reaching to take the man's chin, tilting his head upwards.
"Now, honey, why don't you stop pointing that gun at me and we can have a real conversation, hm?"
He felt his jaw tighten as March felt the sickeningly sweet curl of her fingertips handle the arch of his chin.-- The detective's hold hardened round the hilt of his gun. No. She wasn't going to play him like some god damn fiddle. She had relinquished her weapon, which meant he had the upper hand.
And yet, he couldn't stop thinking about Holly.
The truth? March couldn't give a damn about his own life. Since Carol passed away everything had lost colour. Up was down, and down was up. Any vigour he had died with her. But Holly? No. March may have held a thousand regrets, and lord knew he wasn't a perfect father, nor a good man, but he knew he had to keep going for Holly. Holly made it worth it in the end. She was his entire world.
"Fine. But I'm gonna hold onto mine, just so you know." Clicking the safety back on, he shoved his gun back into his pocket before taking a step back. "Alright, so, talk."
Sofia was amused by the confidence he had. Little did he know, the more he told her, the more she knew about him. She hummed and nodded, not giving anything away as he reeled off what he knew. He had good intel. So did she.
With a tilt of her head, she gave the man a knowing smile.
Had he not brought up every single bit of information he had, she wouldn't have known that this man with the tight-fitting cream suit, bristly moustache and admittedly nice eyes was the detective she was tipped off about.
"Or..." She began circling him, gun still pointed at him in warning as she approached him confidently right until they were both practically staring down the barrel. "How about this? You conveniently forget everything you know, and I'll also forget about dear, sweet Holly. Doesn't that sound like a better deal, Mr. March?"
A breath hitched within the cavity of his chest. Blue eyes rounded at the sound of his daughter's name. Somehow this woman managed to do what a thousand cold-plunges couldn't. Never in his life had Holland March sobered up so quickly.
The detective snatched the front of the woman's dress, before pinning her against the nearby wall, the muzzle of his gun now lightly grazed up against her hip bone. "Where the hell did you hear that name from?" he growled. More importantly, what else did she know? Thank God Holly was staying at her friend's house tonight. Surely, she wouldn't have caught wind of their address... Surely.
"Listen, lady, I'm not playing around no more. I was sent here to do a job, and I'm gonna finish what I was paid to do, with or without your help. But right now, I want you to give me one good reason not to shoot you, right now." Shoulders arched, grip tight, his eyes glowering with protective ire. Just for a sliver of a moment, one could imagine what Holland March was like during the peak of his time on the force; but that was a life time ago.
