a white man disappointing me?
this isn’t new to me.
“I’m not sure it’s fair to call myself a person of color. Yes, I am Native American and Mexican, and I take great pride in that, however, my skin is white. My eyes are light. I will never truly know what people of color have to go through on a day to day basis, but to your second point, it is so important for me to be in roles that are not culturally insensitive. I have had some uncomfortable conversations in some other projects about pieces of the script that I’ve found culturally insensitive in the past and even though it was awkward at the time, looking back I’m glad that I did. Also, a lot of the time since I have an “ethnically ambiguous look” I’m asked to go in for roles for races that I definitely am not, but could resemble, and I always gracefully pass on those as I’m sure there are MANY actresses from that race or ethnic group that they should be looking into- not just me because I kind of resemble it. So I try to do my part in small ways like that. Our industry over the past few years has really started to take a step in the right direction when it comes to that topic- we now have Latin, Black, Asian leads of shows and it’s increasingly becoming more popular so I’m really happy about that and to witness that change.” - PRISCILLA QUINTANA

We’re consumers. We are the byproducts of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty, these things don’t concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy’s name on my underwear. Rogaine, Viagra, Olestra.

If you think criticisms of whitewashing and POC erasure in Winx is “stupid” because the show is “old” you need to take a good long look at yourself and examine the privilege of being able to think whitewashing and erasure is something that can and should be brushed aside in the interest of “having fun.” No, we can’t give Fate the benefit of the doubt because even if the plot and writing is stellar it doesn’t change the blatant racism of it. They erased canonical Latine and Asian characters in the process of creating that show. It was a deliberate and racist choice. Flora has always been Latina, Musa has always been Asian no matter how much Fate tries to convince us otherwise. This is racist. This is whitewashing. There is no ambiguity about it. Winx was progressive for its time in the early 2000s for having half the main cast be POC and now only one of them remains. Tell me why this isn’t an issue to you. Tell me why you’re telling POC why they shouldn’t be mad about it.
