Shadowbringers is a ghost story, it's a love story, it's a post-apocalyptic horror story, it's a high fantasy that turns the genre's notions of light and dark and hero and villain inside-out and upside-down. Fitting with the whole light and dark schema it's FF14's writing at it's darkest and edgiest, and most optimistic and hopeful at the same time. It's about the struggle of finding and protecting whatever hope you can in the most painful of situations, about how even the strongest of us have to rely on one another, and it's an allegory about healing from grief and trauma on a grand scale. It's about choosing an imperfect present, a broken world, over a false promise of a utopian past.

Most importantly it's a story about the universal human experience of trying to kill evil angels while being lied to by wizards who are weirdly obsessed with you.

Part Three: Devilish Debauchery 

You’re still reeling from your hunt as Vergil leads you out the VIP lounge. The lively music of the jazz club is now smooth and sensual, and its patrons seem to be on the verge of starting an orgy. You laugh softly as Vergil looks around at all the tables, completely baffled by the shameless display of unrestrained desires.  

“The doormen really have their work cut out for them tonight,” you whisper in his ear while admiring the depraved view.

Vergil quirks his brow at your candid attitude. “Is this the same power you used when you first walked into the club?” he inquires as you head towards the stairs.

“Yes.” You look over your shoulder with a wicked smirk. “I filled their subconscious with the full presence of my majesty and subtly tied their minds to my emotions,” you explain as Vergil follows close behind you down the stairs. “I can stir their feelings of love, hate, fear…I wasn’t even trying to stir their lust, but I guess my desire to please you must’ve slipped into their minds.”

“How very flattering,” he notes with an amused hum before wrapping his arms around your waist at the bottom of the stairs. “But don’t think this will get you off the hook for your insolence earlier,” he growls in your ear, reminding you that your night of carnal delight is far from over.

Your lips curl into an eager smile as you lead him to an exit at the back of the club. You know that no one here will realize the true cause of their unadulterated lust, but it might be best to slip out unnoticed after such a brazen display of your power. Vergil opens the door and checks for any threats before leading you out into an abandoned back alley. He surveys the area further as you take in the night air and bask in the moonlight…then, a tremendous amount of demonic power engulfs the alley with a bright blue flash of light.

You turn around and find yourself staring up at your fierce fella in all his demonic glory. You’ve only seen him in this form a couple of times, mostly from afar as he laid demons to waste. But now he’s up close and personal…and he’s simply magnificent. He towers over you with his intimidating height, completely shrouding you with his shadow as he approaches you with a distorted growl. Your legs tremble with excitement as you take in every detail, admiring every scale and hard chitin as he offers his clawed hand to you.

“Come…I wish to behold the splendor and glory of my Evening Star among the heavens of night.”
