Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space.

It may have happened decades ago, but even for me as someone who watches videos of space all day, I was holding my breath the whole time. Watching the descent in realtime with the live chatter from Houston to the Command Module to the Lunar Module... speechless, just speechless. I hope the creators can do more.

Yelp Adds Medical Info
Similar to how Yelp improved the restaurant discovery experience by displaying crowdsourced ratings, Yelp is now improving the doctor discovery experience by providing doctor rating info. They're able to do this via a partnership with ProPublica. I like this a lot.
The data ranges from clinic details (# of beds) to clinic performance (ER wait time, any outstanding fines or legal issues) to clinic quality (room quality, doctor communication skills). It’s pulled from ProPublica’s own research as well as public Medicare data.
What this means for startups
There are many startups trying to disrupt doctor discovery. Just type a doctor’s name into Google and you’ll get the same sites every time: HealthGrades, Vitals, WebMD, BetterDoctor, ZocDoc, many more.
Given Yelp’s massive footprint in brick+mortar discovery, VCs often ask these startups: “What if Yelp does it?".1
After all, Yelp already has not only the technology but the audience. Startups have neither. Yelp’s audience makes them defensible—consumers already trust Yelp and have worked it into their daily lives; consumers don’t want to switch.
This is a legitimate question with fair assumptions. The biggest unknown was not whether Yelp had interest in improving doctor discovery—improving brick+mortar discovery is the core of their thesis—but whether they could pull it off. Not only that, Yelp is a public company2 with a lot of resources and a history of ruthless disruption.
Well, now we know: Yelp did it. Or they’re starting to. The question is no longer “What if Yelp does it?” but rather “What if Yelp does *all of it*?” As in: Yelp might not stop at finding the right doctor, but also book them, and more.
The answer to this question depends on each startup’s competitive advantage vs. Yelp's ambitions. For example, a startup could compete against Yelp’s inability to get into the entire doctor discovery flow (e.g., actually booking an appointment; this is the premise behind ZocDoc). And on Yelp's ambitions, they're not too hard to read—look at what they're doing for industries outside healthcare to get an idea of how they're looking to innovate next. For example: customer-to-business messaging.
Early days.

'Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens' Teaser #2
I have way more anticipation for this film than I did after the first teaser.
I think the thing that stands out most to me is how much this trailer understands the Empire. George Lucas clearly didn’t understand it in the prequels. The way the soldiers turn, the big red flag, the imperial element. Here’s hoping.
It pains me to say this, but: meh.
Gattaca begins.
Amazing. Watching this reminds me of when I was young, learning what it took to bring Empire Strikes Back to life. Like how the Dagobah set was elevated to fit Frank Oz underneath, puppeteering Yoda. And how Mark Hamill couldn't always hear Frank Oz so they gave him an earpiece. Bill Irwin brought TARS to life in Interstellar just as much as Frank Oz did with Yoda. Different characters with different emotions, but just as much life.

First Thoughts on ResearchKit
I want to pen down some thoughts before ResearchKit is available for development and I get caught up in the technical possibilites vs. the business possibilities.
ResearchKit is exciting.
In Apple's Spring Forward event earlier this week, Apple's VP of Operation Jeff Williams told us ResearchKit addresses three major problems with medical research:
Distribution: Jeff opened with a slide titled "Limited participation".
Good data: Jeff's second slide was "Subjective data" and his third was "Infrequent data".
Being heard as a patient: "One-way communication" is the "most significant challenge", said Jeff.
From the presentation, we were to suss out ResearchKit solves these problems by bringing two major forces to bear:
Distribution: Apple has sold 700 million iPhones to date.
Tools: The ResearchKit framework itself, along with Xcode, let reseachers easily create apps.
Let's Talk About Distribution
Jeff opened with this, so let's assume by the Laws of Good Presentations this is actually the biggest problem they're aiming to address.
I tweeted criticism of Apple not tackling distribution more directly, despite placing heavy weight on it as a problem. App Store discovery has long since been broken, so simply being in the App Store is not a realistic expectation of increased distribution. It is possible, of course, that a community was simply waiting for this to exist in the App Store, and now that they have their toolset researchers will see big gains in participants. But Apple didn't mention that nor have we seen evidence of that so far.
I have come around a bit to understanding that distribution, while not solved, is at least improved simply by Apple putting its weight behind research with a framework and, more importantly, its own section on the App Store. Though it's unclear how much so it's improved.
Kathryn Shmitz PhD, of Penn Medicine, mentioned in the ResearchKit video she sent 60,000 letters to survey candidates and ended up with 305 participants. That's 0.5%, as in half of one percent—not good. If we assume Apple returned the same percentage of its 700,000,000 base, that's 3,500,000 participants. That math is specious but the point stands: Apple's massive reach alone is distribution for researchers. It's 0 to 60, with the 0 being quite fair.
Michelle Fay Cortez and Caroline Chen, reporting for Bloomberg, mentioned ResearchKit's traction so far:
Stanford University researchers were stunned when they awoke Tuesday to find that 11,000 people had signed up for a cardiovascular study using Apple Inc.’s ResearchKit, less than 24 hours after the iPhone tool was introduced.
This is great news. However, all apps get a boost when they first launch to fanfare; 14 days to restore normality is a safe assumption. On top of that, ResearchKit is currently featured in the top carousel of the App Store's main view. What I'm saying is: we're not seeing true traction yet. Let's check in again in 60 and 90 days when things have died down.
I've thought about what else Apple could do to augment distribution, because I believe in offering up solutions when you point out problems, and I'm unsure. What I imagine the medical research community would most love, or at least the data scientists, would be for Apple to add some type of iOS-level opt-in feature: "Let me know of relevant new medical research opportunities". I do not want this, at least not until Health and HealthKit are more mature. It feels unnatural for the OS to do it vs. an app. Interestingly, this could a strategic area for Android's health intitiative where they could move ahead of Apple, given Android's most passionate userbase is more comfortable with handing over their data.

We're talking about trying to change the scale of the amount of data you can collect, going from data that might be collected say once every 3 months to data let's say once every second.

ResearchKit will put people at the center of research, giving people the insights and the tools they need to live better and healthier lives.
Apple is looking to making a broad impact on the future of human health. We've already seen this with HealthKit. I have no doubt they are well-meaning. I think Apple's thinking is very hopeful, and they're aware of that.
I also think ResearchKit can work, and probably will because of Apple's track record.
But.
While Apple itself is matured, ResearchKit is still very young. Not only that, healthcare is a beast with a billion backs. Just because Apple has hundreds-million-customer reach does not mean the seeds of ResearchKit's dominant future have yet been sewn.
There's a line of thinking in tech that through the data lies the truth; that, along with individuals sussing out insights from data, more data is better. I generally subscribe to this. The first five ResearchKit-enabled apps Apple built are representations of exactly that. What we need now, and what I'd like to see, is more ResearchKit apps from the community. ResearchKit's future depends on it.
The cynical side of me expects to see few apps from healthcare proper, or at least not ones as good as those Apple has launched, because of its bloated, slow-moving self. The optimistic side of me expects to see many more, wonderfully innovative apps from non-traditional healthcare like startups and independent researchers. It would be great to see both sides flourish, for Apple, and for us.
Exciting discovery, if true. I particularly love Joachim Saur's, geophysicist and team leader of the new finding, enthusiasm:
I was always brainstorming how we could use a telescope in other ways. Is there a way you could use a telescope to look inside a planetary body? Then I thought, the aurorae! Because aurorae are controlled by the magnetic field, if you observe the aurorae in an appropriate way, you learn something about the magnetic field. If you know the magnetic field, then you know something about the moon's interior.
I'd use exclamation points too.
Adam Orth, creator of Adr1ft and former Xbox team member, interviewed by IGN's Ryan McCaffrey:
IGN: The first-person experience subgenre seems to be taking off, with games like Firewatch and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, as well as Adr1ft.
Adam Orth: To me, it’s ridiculous to even be mentioned with those games.
IGN: I’ve seen those games; I don’t think it’s ridiculous at all. They all look fantastic, including Adr1ft.
Adam Orth: Well, thank you. Those are the games that inspire me and are the things I’m looking forward to the most. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve played Proteus or The Stanley Parable. Those games are just so inspiring to me. They showed me that you don’t have to do the same old thing. It’s not a new lesson. Proteus was a huge inspiration for Adr1ft – just massive. I can’t stop with that game. I’m obsessed with it. Having these smaller, immersive experience games that are out there – it’s great for everyone. I don’t think anyone out there is going to have a problem with a massively interesting and fun high quality immersive experience that’s not 65 hours. I often talk about Adr1ft being like going to see the director’s cut of Interstellar at the best IMAX you can. It’s like a $30-$40 night. You’re going to be entertained for 3 hours and maybe go back and see it again. That feels like a premium entertainment experience to me. I think about Adr1ft a little bit like that.
Probably my most anticipated game of 2015. That 9-minute gameplay video... I just can't even imagine this with Oculus. It's going to be a phenomenal experience.
A few years ago I backed a short film called Minka on Kickstarter. I think my friends and family may have thought I was crazy to donate $5,000. But the story was so ripe, the filmmaking so beautiful. Minka is a work of art and I still watch it every few months. Davina and her team achieved something truthfully poignant. That's rare and Minka is memorable.

The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is in the running with Ender's Game, The Light of Other Days, and Childhood's End for my all-time favorite sci-fi novels. The former has already been Hollywood-ized, unfortunately, and the latter is supposedly being produced by Syfy. Here's hoping.
