Do you have any film/TV show recommendations in particular for people just starting to get into the legend? I want to find more information about the story and characters because I think it's quite interesting, but I have some difficulties with reading at the moment :)
Hello!! :) and welcome!Yes, I do have some recs, even if I have to say that arthurian TV is not always the best. Still, for someone that wants to start and pick up who’s who and the general story, these might be useful:- The legend of King Arthur, a 10 episodes series that you might also be able to find on YouTube. It’s very Malory like, so it is truly a gem. - Excalibur 1981. I’m not a superfan of this movie, but it might be useful to see how the grail theme is intruduced.- Sword in the Stone (the cartoon), mostly because it’s a classic and not many other shows and movies focus on pre king Arthur.- Mists of Avalon miniserie is another popular one and has a lot of the Lancelot Arthur Guinevere love triangle.- Merlin and the Sword is a not very famous movie, a but cheesy but very fun. It has some interesting plot regarding Merlin and Nimue and about Gawain and Ragnelle.- Camelot 1967 is the beautiful musical that made me love Lancelot for the first time.- Any Connecticut Yankee movie. These are great, all different adaptation of Mark Twain’s novel where a modern guy ends up in Camelot. A Knight in Camelot is a good one! - Kaamelott. This is the best arthurian show out there. The first two seasons are just comedic sketches, so you can even just start from the third season to have more plot (more in the Kaamelott tag of this blog!) - Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the best arthurian movie out there, but I put it last because it’s a parody and best enjoyable I think after having watched some serious take on the legends!

Why is everyone fighting?
The Saxons vs. Britons War Explained
So, there’s a lot of talk about the great ongoing conflict between the Britons (in our case that mostly consists of the people of Camelot) and the Saxons. With all of the sieges, the battles and the attacks I though some of you might be wondering what they’re all fighting over. The short answer: it’s complicated. The simplest way of putting it is they’re fighting over land. Now, Arthur’s reign is estimated to have happened at any point between the late 5th and early 6th centuries. For the purpose of this roleplay let us assume that at that time exact territory covered by the kingdom of Camelot (ie. part of what would later become Wessex in the 7th century) is vague and uncertain due to constant battles that redefine the borders. The main bordering kingdoms that you need to worry about are Sussex, Essex and Kent, all of which are to the east of Camelot and ruled by respective Saxon sovereigns. Now, the Saxons used to be settled to the east WITHIN Camelot’s borders until Arthur took the throne and forced them out of the land. The Saxons are now fighting to take back their land and redefine their borders so that the territories of Sussex, Essex, and Kent expand INTO what is now Camelot. The Britons are fighting to keep the Saxons OUT of Camelot and forcing them into their limited Eastern and Southern territories.Â
Now for the fun part.
Who started the war? Why are they still fighting over it? Who does the land actually belong to? The short answer: it’s complicated. Everything started way back when in the rule of the infamous king Vortigern. So Vortigern is at war with the Romans and it’s not looking good. He’s been a terrible king and he’s facing some pretty terrible odds, so what does he do? He asks for help. Vortigern sends word to some Germanic tribes from the North Sea (living in what is now modern day Germany) to come join in the fight against the Romans. These fierce foreign tribes were the Saxons. Vortigern invites the Saxons into Britain and offers them land in exchange for help defeating the Romans. Everything seems to be going well and the war is won, only once that’s done Vortigern realises he MESSED Up. He didn’t have enough land to offer the Saxons that had migrated into Britain, so once the Romans were defeated he declared war on his former allies. Vortigern continues to do a terrible job and loses most of the Briton’s land to the Saxons, who are now pissed that they didn’t get the land they were promised and need a home to settle in. Vortigern eventually dies and nobody really cares until Uther Pendragon shows up and takes the throne. Now Uther isn’t exactly perfect, but he does a better job than Vortigern. He manages to even the odds a little bit against the Saxons and continues waging war against them until the day he dies.
In comes our golden boy. Once Uther Pendragon is dead it’s revealed that he had an illegitimate son by the Lady Ygraine (who was married to the Duke of Cornwall.) This son, aka our beloved Arthur, pulls the sword from the stone and is crowned the rightful king of Camelot. Once he takes the throne he SLAYS. Arthur manages to fully push the Saxons out of Camelot and forces them all the way to the south and the eastern borders of Britain. In return, the Saxons launch attacks against Camelot and continue to try to find ways to reclaim the territory they had settled in during the fall of Vortigern. In summary, there is no right or wrong side, everything is complicated and when in doubt you should blame everything on Vortigern. He sucks.
Locations of Camelot
Dear all,
We would like to try and make the city of Camelot slightly easier to orientate within, and so we would like to create a masterlist of all the places mentioned within the RP so far. If your character mentioned, visited or owns any location not on this list, please contact us so we can complete this reference. We would also like to ask you not to make up any new places out of thin air without running it by the admins first. It makes RPing much easier, thank you!
