"Hokey Pokey" is derived from the Latin "Hoc est Corpus." These words come from the Catholic Mass and the miracle of transubstantiation. Literally they mean "Thus is My Body." Therefore, putting in your left arm, your right arm, etc. culminating with putting your "Whole Self In," relates to how Christ kept nothing back from his followers and how it is Christlike to sacrifice oneself*. Literally - it's what it's all about.

I love Edgedancer because of the segment where this weird old beggar asks, "If you were a body part, what would you be?" And he's comparing parts of a body to people in a society, and I'm like, Okay Brandon, at least Wit's philosophizing builds character. This is just Very Odd. And then the beggar turns out to actually be TWO THOUSAND BUGS

International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust

The date of 1/27 is chosen to coincide with the liberation of Auschwitz. Let us also remember that many other camps were not liberated until weeks or months later, and that in the final days of the war the Nazis forced prisoners on death marches or carried out mass killings as the front approached.

Let us not forget that some camps liberated by the Soviets stood in territories where survivors later faced new forms of repression, including forced labor conscriptions known colloquially as “malenki robot,” which swept up hundreds of thousands of civilians in Eastern Europe.

Let us not forget the Ladino speaking Jews who have been severely underrepresented in remembrances of the Holocaust.

Let us not forget the other undesirables who died alongside Jews in the camps. The Roma and Sinti, people with disabilities, political prisoners, Jehovah’s Witnesses, gay men persecuted under Paragraph 175, Black Europeans subjected to sterilization and violence, Soviet POWs who died by the millions, and all those deemed “undesirable” by the Reich.

Finally, let us not forget that when we say "Never Again," we must live that. I speak of the people of Gaza who are being treated to a modern day Shoah by the very country that was built to be a Jewish homeland. I speak of the people of Minneapolis who are contending with a new kind of secret police, and I speak of all people who are singled out as "Undesirable" by those with the power to seek a "Final Solution."
