A year ago during this past week, I found out that I had been marching on a broken foot for 2 weeks during all day rehearsals with The Academy. I remember sitting in the room of my podiatrist’s office as he delivered my season ending news. And I cried a lot. A dream I always had of marching my age out came to a devastating halt. I spent the rest of the season with The Academy, in my boot and heavily medicated, with false hopes of returning to the field due to many, many miscommunications within the staff.
I know how lame it sounds, but I still grieve for the season I lost. I was physically “there” with the corps, but mentally, I was completely gone. I spent most of the summer desperately wishing it was just a nightmare and I would wake up. I still wish it was a nightmare and that I would wake up. Some days I was happy I stayed - I was surrounded by people at all times. Most days though I was miserable and felt like I was completely alone. This past year, I felt more alone and alienated than ever. I don’t feel like an alumni of either corps I marched, and one member of Academy even went out of his way to tell me I shouldn’t ever tell anyone I marched Academy and that I would never be a part of the family there; he told me no one cared about me there. I’m just guessing he’s not the only that felt that way. I feel so alone. So, so, so alone.
For those of you marching, please take care of yourselves. My doctor and I have speculated that my broken bone was a result of an injury I got while marching in 2013 and subsequently ignored. There was a small stress fracture in the bone I broken and it had probably been just waiting to give out. Had I acknowledged my injury post-season in 2013, I probably could have healed my foot before the year was over and prevented everything. Even just knowing that I could have possibly been back in if I had known 2 weeks earlier about my broken foot kills me inside. It’s devastating to lose a season like that.
Unfortunately, the drum corps community encourages members to “push through the pain” and many times we are taught to ignore our serious injuries. You cannot afford to do this while in serious pain. You are not imagining that serious pain. You can ignore being sore or your arms hurting while holding your horn up. You can ignore the blister on your foot and the sunburns on your neck. Those ARE the pains you ignore!! But you CANNOT ignore serious pain. I was marching on a BROKEN BONE and was trying to ignore it because I was originally told that there was nothing wrong with my foot and I should “suck it up” or I would lose my spot. It got to a point where I could no longer walk because I couldn’t put /any/ weight on my foot. That’s serious stuff. I permanently damaged my foot, am looking at surgery in my future, and I can never march again. I don’t get a redo. I’m too old and that’s life.
TL;DR, Stop suffering in tremendous amounts of pain because a community of people feel it’s wrong for you to sit out for 5 minutes or miss a block to get an x-ray done. Your body and your season marching are worth it.

This is one of the best things that has EVER HAPPENED ON LIVE TELEVISION. You could not write this. People would say you were being too fanciful or ridiculous. The best things happen in real life. William is forbidden, by tradition, to turn around. Harry is not. SUCH BROTHERS. MY HEART.
