VETTED CAMPAIGN DELETED BY GFM AND NEEDING TO RAISE FUNDS FROM SCRATCH
GFM unjustly terminated Fidaa's @fidaa-family2 campaign and she lost all of the funds she'd raised so far to help evacuate her family. She has to start all over with a new campaign.
Fidaa's campaign has been vetted here and here. Please consider donating to her if you have anything at all to give. Small dollar amounts can add up so never think you won't make a difference! If you have enough to buy a cup of coffee, consider skipping it to give to Fidaa instead. Imagine how frustrating it would be after months of fundraising to lose what you've worked hard for. We need to show Fidaa our support now more than ever!
Fidaa and her beautiful kids Sila and Hamoud are raising money to survive the genocide in Gaza. Whether these funds go to food (prices are s
You can also donate through Paypal directly.
Please reblog & share this post even if you aren't able to donate. Let's help this fundraiser reach as many people as possible. <3
Fidaa has established a new campaign after scammers hacked into her old campaign, and she was forced to close it. She has to start from scratch once again with a new campaign and needs our help more than ever. Please consider donating to Fidaa and her beautiful children Sila and Hamoud.
hateful jack is soooo personal to me. he is the kindest, sweetest boy in the lower east side (if not all if manhattan) but when hes mad hes furious. when he glares at someone its daggers. when he hates you its almost impossible to imagine this is the same boy who tucks the littles into bed every night. lullabies coming out of the same mouth that said the most disrespectful vile things to someone he hates just hours ago.
Make no mistake, there has been criticism and speculation surrounding the character of Sarah Jacobs since 1992. Time and again I have encountered commenters across platforms from weeks, years, or decades ago that make claims which all essentially boil down to...
Myth: "Sarah was added to the film as an afterthought."
I would like to lay out (hopefully for the last time) the facts.
Yes, Sarah Jacobs was not Jack's original love interest. No, the original love interest was not David. Prior to selling their story to Disney, Bob Tzudiker and Noni White had written Newsies (or "Hard Promises") with a newsgirl character named "Charlie." Charlie was intended to be Jack's love interest and the two of them would have left together on a train for Santa Fe at the end of the film. Charlie, along with a few other plot points, was cut from the story to make it more family friendly because she lived in a "house of ill repute" with her aunt, a prostitute. The job of "love interest" was then delegated to Sarah, the older sister of David and Les. Since we don't have a copy of the original script with Charlie, the original role that Sarah may have played in Newsies pre-Disney is unknown.
“When we originally wrote (the story) with Charlie the girl who was the love interest of Jack she lived in a house of ill repute with her aunt and her aunt did not want her to go into that life and so she was really trying to shield her from it. As soon as we sold it to Disney I said to Bob, guess what Bob, goodbye to the house of prostitution. This was a family film and it was just not going to fly. That was changed to Me[dd]a Larkson (a cabaret style singer).” -Noni White, [source]
No, Sarah Jacobs wasn't thrown in just to check a box. In the very earliest script that we do have, often referred to as "Hard Promises," Sarah was to have a solo called "What Will Become of the Boy?" Her song was the only planned solo apart from Jack's and it may be assumed that it was written before Santa Fe as Jack's solo is referred to simply with the placeholder "Jack's Ballad." I believe that this should serve as evidence enough that Sarah was written with intention. Sarah's solo, her words and perspective, were deemed important enough to explore as Newsies developed.
"Hard Promises" script.
Yes, filmed Sarah scenes were cut from the movie. Director Kenny Ortega was already pushing the runtime of Newsies as a Disney feature film to its absolute limit at 121 minutes. There were plenty of scenes filmed that ultimately didn't make the cut, unfortunately including some that would have given Sarah more screentime.
Top: Snippets of a deleted Sarah scene clipped from Newsies trailers. Bottom: Cut Sarah lines corresponding to above clips, 1991 "15th Green" script.
No, Sarah Jacobs isn't and was never "just" the love interest. The plain fact is, Sarah's romantic relationship with Jack was never the focus of the plot in any of the scripts. Many have interpreted this as a badly written "love story," and I suppose in a Disney film you do expect a love story. But by trying to see Sarah as "just" the love interest, her real impact on Jack and the overall story is missed. No other character in Newsies has a clearer eye than Sarah Jacobs. She sees through Jack's facade and pulls him out of the clouds down to solid ground when David would be hurt by the truth and the other newsies, having grown to expect tall tales, would play into the fantasy. If it weren't for Sarah Jacobs, Jack Kelly would have found himself in Santa Fe just as alone as he had imagined he was in New York. And if it weren't for Sarah Jacobs, Denton's wisdom would have been forgotten and the strike lost under a pile of hurt feelings, bruised pride, and a desperate surrender in the face of fear.
Fact: Sarah Jacobs's role in Newsies has existed at least as long as Disney has been connected to the story and she is far more important than she has historically been given credit for.
newsies fandom is fuckin wild bc you’ll open up tumblr or ao3 and immediately see something about a guy named bark and his ship with a guy named cardboard box that has divided the fandom bc half of them think that bark should have been with another guy named shoe

Hey tumblr lovelies
I have not been consistently posting here at all. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get to that point. But I’m choosing not to stress about it.
Anyway!
This is a drawing I’m very proud of! I hope you like it too!

Gall Wasps: these wasps produce a chemical that triggers abnormal cell growth in plants, causing the plants to form strange-looking structures around the wasp's larvae
Above: plant growths caused by the larvae of three different species of gall wasp, including Trigonaspis teres, Callirhytis seminator, and Feron izabellae
These tumor-like growths are known as plant galls. They develop in response to chemicals that are injected or secreted by certain insects, mites, and nematodes. Each plant gall forms around the body of a single larva (or, in some cases, a small group of larvae), and the structure serves as both protection and sustenance for the tiny creature developing within.
Above: the plant gall of the oak apple gall wasp, Atrusca quercuscentricola, with a bisected view that shows the larva within
There are many different insects that can trigger the production of plant galls, including certain aphids, psyllids, flies, beetles, scale insects, and caterpillars, but gall-forming wasps are especially diverse. They also create some of the most distinctive plant galls in nature.
Above: the photo at the top shows the plant gall of an unidentified gall wasp from the family Cynipidae, and the photo at the bottom depicts the plant galls of the urchin gall wasp, Cynips quercusechinus
The color, shape, size, and texture of each plant gall varies depending on the species of gall wasp that induces it. Some wasps are associated with plant galls that look like fuzzy little pom-poms; others produce mushroom-shaped structures, colorful discs, cones, pink spheres, cottonballs, etc.
Above: this photo shows a mushroom gall wasp, Heteroecus sanctaeclarae, which produces plant galls that look like tiny mushroom-shaped houses
As this article explains:
Galls are plant growths (similar to tumors) that are induced by various organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and insects. Gall wasps have evolved to “trick” the plant into forming this growth which they then use for food and shelter as they transform from a larva to an adult.
The wasp larvae secrete chemicals that mimic growth hormones in a particular plant upon hatching. The chemicals trick the oak into growing a gall on its flowers, acorns, leaves, or stems. The larva is then encapsulated by the gall as it grows, waiting patiently inside until its metamorphosis is complete.
Above: Feron parmula, commonly known as the disc gall wasp
Many of these plant galls have elaborate, colorful features that are truly stunning.
Above: the spined-turban gall wasp, Cynips douglasii
Gall-forming wasps are only parasitic toward plants -- they do not parasitize other animals. The larvae feed on the nutritive tissues of their plant galls, but the adult wasps do not feed at all.
Above: plant galls produced by two different species of gall wasp
These wasps also have a peculiar reproductive cycle:
Many species have alternating generations, meaning all of the adults emerging from galls during one time of the year are female-only, while the adults emerging in a different season have both males and females. Most species have females that can reproduce using parthenogenesis when they emerge by themselves. This means that their eggs are essentially clones of themselves. What’s more, some species appear not to have any males at all.
Above: the huge, fuzzy plant galls of Striatoandricus furnessae and Druon pattoni
Scientists have named and described roughly 1400 species of gall wasp, and that's likely just a fraction of the number of species that actually exist, as gall-forming organisms are widely understudied.

Once the larva transforms into a fully-developed wasp, it finally emerges from its gall.

Exciting and topical BirdNews(TM) for you: a European robin has somehow ended up in Montreal. Nobody knows how. This is apparently the first time we've had one visit Canada, hopefully it will be okay in our winter!
Canada's first European Robin has caused a stir after its discovery in Montreal. The bird was found close to the banks of the St Lawrence Ri
I love that people came running to Stare
This is quite funny because right now in France we have a Belted Kingfisher, the very first time we've had this iconic North American species visit the country. No one really know how it got here either (got lost during migration? hitched a ride on a boat?). People are coming from all of western Europe to watch it
Maybe they just switched places with the robin

honestly i absolutely do think we as non-romani people are obligated to go out of our way to learn about romani history. you simply must dedicate your own time to it. listen to django reinhardt and read about what the nazis did to johann trollmann and learn about the origins of flamenco and study the history of chattel slavery in romania and do some looking into words in your language with romanes origins. and spend extra time learning about the horrors inflicted on the romani population of europe during the holocaust. nobody else is going to teach us these things! we literally have got to do it ourselves or it just will never get done!
Romani slavery in Romania is absolutely denied and ignored by the majority of the population to the point where people won't even acknowledge that anti-roma discrimination is racism, let alone try to learn about it since it's also completely left out from any learning materials in school.
Though resources are available especially if you speak Romanian! and they also have a few English resources as well, such as this:
