the score of swiss army man is insanely beautiful. its so insane. to me, it's really like nothing i’ve ever experienced before in a movie setting. i think intrinsically it's very beautiful and unique but it also showcases one of the movie’s core themes about being a person/human. yknow…the little things you hum to yourself? the weird bs you mumble-sing as you walk, the strange vocalizations, the lullabies you half-remember, the sounds you hum to comfort yourself or calm yourself down. of course there’s the reoccurring lullaby melody. hank can’t remember the words probably because the person who sung it to him died when he was young (which is also very real because you remember these tiny things that seem so insignificant and hazy but you hold onto them) but its also real because i think we’ve all had this experience of half-remembering a melody and filling in some bullshit for words. it’s very funny but also such a genuine human experience. along with the song you hate getting stuck in your head at the most inopportune moments. but i love how that even reoccurs and gets recontextualized!!! but beyond just the reality of the human experience that it displays, i love how just like manny and hank are using bits from the world to create their own world, the score uses the actors’ voices and vocalizations to create the score. this whole movie has a very mixed media vibe. a very hodgepodge, trash-to-treasure thing. on one hand its “messy”—hank’s singular croc, the rope tieing them together, hank’s jacket he finds in the trash—just like how the vocals themselves are “messy”, par say. not perfect or not even a fully-formed song at many points—sometimes just sounds are repeated. but its not messy or trashy! its taking elements of other things to make something beautiful. manny and hank create a beautiful world full of dancing and music and bus rides and life out of trash! and the score takes the hummings and vocal murmerings of these characters to make a truly breathtaking score.
