Just unreal.
L7 at the Uptown Bar, Minneapolis (1991)
RIP Jennifer Finch 😢
bro it's so fucked that the facebook algo seems to have recently decided to show me like "content for lonely mid-30s men" and it's this cursed combination of like
videos of girls of questionably-legal age dressed up as videogame characters doing some like pixar face shit
a very specific genre of young redheads going on about how they're really attracted to older men or even their dad's friends ????
some weird kind of "goth gf" femdom-ish kind of stuff?
"dating advice" at varying points on the reasonable-observation/seething-incel spectrum...a lot of these guys are in march 2026 still seething about that "man vs bear" post lmao
women basically doing redpill/MRA talking points, i guess to pander to their audience? Kind of a uniquely pathetic type of person tbh.
like i know it's old news to say that these social media algorithms are fucked but like...yeah, they're pretty fucked lmao.
also it's like serving me up this kind of ragebait slop
"Arguing with men about the bill? In this economy?"
it feels like a troll article to me? like she has this rule in her head that contradicts a notional commitment to equality because of her daddy issues. come on.and i mean:
I'm looking for signs of partnership. When a man reaches for the bill without hesitation, it's not about the cost. It's about the instinct to handle things. Leadership in small moments signals leadership in larger ones.
well are you looking for a partner or a leader? These are very different things, and i'm not sure that calling for your male romantic partner to provide you with "leadership in larger moments" is actually compatible with calling oneself a feminist. But, whatever, the contents of the article aren't really the point.
Now in the comments of the facebook post that i got to this link through there are mostly men being really aggrieved, and i take it that getting this response = engagement = money -- so it being an incoherent mess of an article is kind of the point. It's ragebait. But -- it's also going to be the case that there will be people for whom this kind of crap is the primary way that the concept of "feminism" is presented to them. Under-rated component of the rise of online misogyny imo.
although actually having been exposed to like cursed normie dating discourse recently, there do seem to be a lot of women who are trying to do a sort of "woke complementarianism" thing
Benevolent sexism is the Mormon speaking. It is the mind killer. Society must kidnap it via the down with cis bus and when it’s dead put it on the front of the bus like the stuff at the end of ship bows
idk if I’d call it benevolent sexism, but I see a lot of “men need to wine+dine you, provide serious financial value, etc because as the woman you’re the prize and this is what #feminism means to me” type posts.
on a certain level, I don’t even disagree, I think women bring innate value to a relationship in a way that men don’t, simply because we need women far more than they need us.
But idk how this actually functions in practice, there are by definition fewer “men richer than me” than there are women at any given social bracket.
idk, as a guy who’s kinda goofy looking and also makes basically no money, I’m team “the hot broke guy should get the girl”. I’d rather be friends with the hot broke guy; he’s beating me in an avenue for which I respect him. Every time a beautiful woman marries some local businessman who looks like a walking turd in a golf shirt, an angel cries
Yes, this is literally benevolent sexism. Conservatives and makeup advertisers have been rebranding sexism as "#Feminism" for a while now; it still is what it is.
As to the statement that men need women more than the reverse.. in a sense that does appear to be somewhat true; certainly there are multiple studies indicating that women are more likely to report happiness/high life satisfaction while single than men/ that being in a relationship is more likely to have a positive effect on life satisfaction and even life expectancy for men than for women.
But before we decide this is because of some kind of magic Value Source in the Divine Feminine Soul or some shit, we should consider alternatives.
For instance, does sexism mean that on average women are more likely to be in a relationship with someone who doesn't really respect them?
Are men socialised not to give or receive physical and emotional intimacy within platonic friendships and even familial relationships with other men, leaving women as their only potential source of these things?
Are middle-aged women likely to be making sure their partners eat right and make their doctor's appointments, while also having to ensure that they do those things for themselves whether they're partnered or not?
Are these things helped by telling men that they should treat women as a prize to be bought and not fellow human beings, or.. the opposite of that?
What's really interesting to me is that this is the shit that's being presented by social media algorithms as what "feminism" means, at least ot some of the population: women making basically incoherent demands. We're equals and also you have to win me like a prize, take leadership, "give me the princess treatment", and if you don't pay for the meal on a date that's a "red flag".
I don't have a strong objection to this set of preferences, but they are not feminist. The straightforwardly feminist position would be that a man paying for a meal is a patriarchal norm, and since the personal is political it's a practice that should be rejected.
I also do kind of think that in practice you do kind of have to make a choice as to whether you want to be a dependent or an equal. If you start a relationship on the basis of the man taking leadership and paying for everything, do you really expect to then transition to an egalitarian relationship? I'm not saying it's impossible but there's an obvious tension there imo.
The stuff i'm describing here is coming to my facebook feed alongside advertisements for onlyfans accounts, semi-redpill content, and for some reason dramatic readings of r/AITA threads. This pseudo-feminism is clearly part of an ecosystem with these other things, i think.
Anyway, don't have a proper analysis of any of it but that's what i'm being served by the facebook algo.
i mean i was basically lost in the sauce of this stuff 12 years ago when the online gender wars were at their peak and yeah it's bad. that was before algorithms were advanced and it was people sharing ragebait on reddit or whatever and being terminally online (and what broke me out of it was talking to people IRL + a few very impactful things i found like ozy on tumblr and the SSC posts on toxoplasma and different worlds etc. which has just gotten even worse now and 'talking to people IRL' might not even help cause it's not restricted to terminally online people anymore).
ocasionally i notice my youtube algorithm drifting that way and i have to deliberately spend time 'do not recommend this channel' ing a bunch of stuff to sort it again (although it hasn't done that in a while, but i remember when andrew tate was big it felt like I had to actively avoid youtube wanting to push my recommendations in that direction, and i only rarely watch shorts and don't have tiktok/ facebook).
I kinda feel like i got immunity from smallpox by having had cowpox early.
The three tiers of queer sff:
Broke: what is worldbuilding? Made in a lab to be as blandly inoffensive as possible. Time to randomly namedrope terms like 'nonbinary' and 'ace' while doing zero work actually incorporating them into the world or characters and have someone give a speech about how valid they are. Lines like 'I'm too ace for this' while never exploring the concept of asexuality or aromanticism and still having very central romance plotlines is common. I hate it here learn how to write realistic dialogue and fully realized characters I'm begging.
Woke: more ore less typical sci-fi and fantasy but It’s Queer Now. Might include in-universe queerphobia to be struggled against or may have queer identities be fully normalized. Can be done bad or well depending on the skill of the writer. A good way to explore our contemporary ideas of gender and sexuality or to have a bit of a power fantasy with lesbian princesses and trans knights. There will probably be a bisexual love triangle.
Bespoke: what is a gender. What is monogamy. What is polyamory. What is romance. What is platonic. Time to show you the most fucked up uncategorizable relationship you’ve ever seen. There may be weird ass metaphorical sex
fuck it
Book recs: tier three queer sff
AKA books that tackle gender, sexuality and relationships in ways that come off as deeply alien and non normative to our present day culture, frequently featuring actual aliens.
For details on the books, check under the readmore! My personal favorites are marked with an *
A note: as I'm generally more into sci-fi than fantasy, this list skews heavily toward the former. Feel free to make your own recommendations in the notes if you know of more titles!

On this, the anniversary of the lunar landing, let us also celebrate the greatest post-mission achievement by a crewman.
I refer, of course, to the time Buzz Aldrin (age 72 at the time) cold-cocked a moon landing conspiracy theorist straight in his smug face after being accused of being a coward, liar, and thief.
Yes, someone was indeed dumb enough to tell a man so unafraid of death that he was willing to go into the void on a fragile explosive rocket, a coward.
Said dumbass was filming this confrontation as some sort of proof of moon fraud, but has instead captured this glorious moment of near-cosmic justice for us to loop for all time.
Aldrin was not charged with any crime. He should have been given another medal for public service.
Said dumbass tried to take Aldrin to court for assault and was thrown out on his metaphorical ass, being cited as the instigator of the incident after luring Aldrin into a meeting under false pretenses (telling the former astronaut he was being interviewed for a children's program).
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
The Wizard’s Spell Compendium (Vol 1 - 1996, Vol 2 - 1997, Vol 3 and 4 - 1998) and the Priest’s Spell Compendium (which I do not own) is a project similar to the Encyclopedia Magica (though, in my estimation, a slightly less exciting one). It collects every magic-user spell from 1975 to 1995 (though at least some spells published in 1996 products made their way in) but omits some systems that stray too far from the game’s core Jack Vance-inspired magic (spellfire magic, for instance, and the psionic-laced magic of Dark Sun’s dragon kings). Many of the spells were updated for consistency, which is nice, and there are references to the original source for archival purposes. The spells are listed alphabetically with little icons to indicate if they are from a specific campaign setting.
It’s a pretty massive, exhaustive and slightly exhausting project. I appreciate that the books exist (if for no other reason than for the fun selection of art by Ken Frank, Arnie Swekel and Glen Angus). As an aid for play, though, I find these a good deal less useful than the magic item books. Management of spells is one of the most tedious tasks in D&D in my humble opinion and a gigantic heap of all the spells ever is…not as helpful in practice as they might seem.
