Reducing all of Taylor's art to her ex feels kinda misogynistic tbh. We have zero idea what this albums going to be about. People are really putting 2 and 2 together to make 56 and forwarding that 'all she does is write about her exes' narrative

jokes aside, I think it’s very clear that taylor wants to have a certain narrative of what happened out there. this can be gathered from the change in her team’s strategy when it comes to handling her relationships (for example, we get a lot more direct explanations of what’s happening in her life). taylor knows the optics of putting out an album called ‘the tortured poets department.’ what a lot of new fans forget is that she has spoken extensively about how her music is a reflection of what’s happening in her personal life (skip to 6:33). sure, she’s gone through a lot of phases since this interview, but reducing these details to ‘petty autobiographical stuff’ isn’t fair to her. it isn’t petty. it’s just her life, and her music is written about her life. art does not exist in a vacuum.

no one is denying her creative autonomy by assuming that this album is going to be autobiographical. if she wanted people to interpret it through a fictionalized lens, she would say as much. I would suggest reading through her betty speeches (transcribed by @cages-boxes-hunters-foxes ofc) to get a better understanding of her feelings on this topic. in short, she knows when her music will be perceived as autobiographical, and that’s a conscious decision she makes. I will link a couple of speeches at the end of this post that illustrate this.

it isn’t gross to just take her at her word. she is allowed to share things about her life, and when she does, we are allowed to discuss them without a dozen caveats.

genuinely, honestly, I wish fandom could move past "depiction isn't endorsement".

because it's really meant to be sort of the baby beginner step to media literacy but in fandom spaces it usually acts like a trump card to shut down critical discussions. it's one of the thought terminating cliches of fandom that discourages learning how to interrogate the text beyond "fiction isn't reality, dummy".

yes, the popular whump fic in your fandom isn't endorsing torture, but also, can you tell when the canon for your fandom is endorsing a message? how do you then choose to interact with that canon, and do you get defensive when people are critical of the source material?

depiction isn't endorsement, but can you tell when fandom trends are misogynistic or racist? can you see how killing off a black female character to "punish" her in fanfiction with the framing that she deserves it, and the popular narrative in a certain fandom that a heroic black man is a possessive liar and a white villain is a good man deserving redemption, is endorsing a message in fanfic? do you argue that it's "just fiction" when people get very understandably upset at misogyny and racism in fandom spaces?

yeah, depiction isn't endorsement, but do you think this is where it starts and stops as the only thing you really need to know? do you think people who are critical of things aren't engaging with it properly, or being mean, because they've forgotten the golden fandom rule of "fiction isn't reality"?

nbc hannibal isn't endorsing cannibalism as a dietary choice, but top gun maverick and call of duty: modern warfare were quite literally sponsored by the us military as propaganda for recruitment.

I'm not saying don't enjoy the ip that's making you happy or calling for moral purity in your media habits or whatever. just saying that there's a lot to media literacy beyond the feel good affirmations that periodically circulate fandom, and those affirmation posts both lack necessary nuance and discourage people from engaging with said nuance.

Right, I am imagining an unpleasant cishet alloallo guy who says "I'm aro!" Because he wants to have no-strings-attached sex with women. He comes into the local gay bar and starts hitting on women there.

Outcome one: He's unpleasant, overly pushy, just generally brings the worst kind of entitlement. He gets kicked out, a few weeks in a row, then barred, just like anyone else would who was persistently harshing everyone's mellow. Orientation doesn't matter there, anyone doing that would be warned, then kicked, then barred.

Outcome two: He's not unpleasant. He uses the language of aromanticism and that opens him up to conversations about what exactly it means. "I'm aro and I like my hookups to be with friends, does it work that way for you? I'm aro and I like to have committed relationships just not romantic ones. I'm aro and I like to only have purely no-strings sex with strangers. I'm aro and..." He learns the words that he needs to get the kind of relationship he wants, and often it's with aro people who also want sex without romance, or it's with people who are just hooking up because their dance card is full, or who are also not looking for long romantic relationships. Eventually because he really is alloromo he either starts to seek a romantic relationship within the friends he made here or he just starts going somewhere else. Everyone wins.

Option three: He realises that he was not in fact lying, and now that he is moving in queer community where he can name his desires better he is happier because he can just say what he wants, instead of having to play the horrible square games of heteropatriarchal coupling.
