"Pretty much. There are some places I shouldn't go like space 'cause there's no air there and all that. Though I learned how to drive a mini shuttle, so I still go up there sometimes."
That sure was a lot to dump on anyone. Erica was simply happy to talk about her adventures, having at one point been stuck in just one world too. Still, she tilted her head at the sudden reaction. If it didn't like being called cute, it really wasn't helping the impression. It reminded her of Smokey whenever he tried to bite into anything.
"Thanks, I think my mother picked a nice name too." She was lucky. Most elven names were a mouthful. "I've got some nicknames too. My friend calls me Tails sometimes."
But as fun as sitting there and talking was, Erica needed to get back on her feet. She hopped off the wall and started stretching.
"So, what do you do for fun around here?"
It definitely did not dislike being called cute. Quite the opposite, actually. The reaction was of someone experiencing a lot of feelings over being given what to them was a high compliment.
"Tails is cute too." It wasn't hard to infer where that nickname came from.
It took a moment to consider her question though, thinking about what was in proximity to them that seemed like an appropriate thing to show a guest.
"Do you like slides? I know where to find some really tall ones that spiral around." It turned its finger around in the air as it described it.
Even though slides were just a naturally occurring part of the environment here rather than something specifically built for entertainment, the enjoyment of riding your way down somethingâbe it a hill or anything elseâseemed to be universal.

Yes, even if you're mortal enemies.
"Yes. It's uh... It's all like a pomegranate." The fruit that would help her explanation was dug out from the pile and sliced in half. "There are a bunch of universes, worlds, pocket dimensions, and all that space between those bits is where most of the shadows are. There isn't a place without darkness, so all the dark nooks are connected and can be used to go wherever you want."
It was a simple and delicious explanation for sure. But it showed why she wasn't too concerned about being stuck there.
"I think you're really cute. A cute name would suit you!" It was also the least confusing name out of the bunch. "Yep. They're small trees, more like a shrub, I guess. They all have little flowers that can be white, pink or purple. Purple's my favorite color!"
Her ever present purple tank top attested to that.
It listened very attentively to her explanation, the fruit it was holding being all but forgotten. This was, after all, someone from another world explaining how other worlds worked and all the expansive things that existed outside of the frankly already very expansive world it lived in.
"That soundssss amazing! So you can go anywhere at all?"
That sounded like some kind of fantasy. It would love to be able to go places like that.
And now she was saying it was cute??
"R-really?" It sunk its teeth into the piece of fruit and just held it in front of its mouth as a way of venting its flustered reaction, vibrating a little before it composed itself. "You're really nice, Erica. Being named after flowers suits you."
"Well, yes, there's only so much we humans can study at the moment." It would be no fun if humans could just readily get their hands on the knowledge of every single thing. It's the process of finding things out for themselves that leads to satisfaction, in his opinion.
"We don't have an equivalent to those where I'm from since we communicate telepathically"
"Oh." Would an NDA really be that much harder to uphold when one can talk to others with their mind? Surely, they could just not think of-- hold on.
Could this stranger possibly read his mind?
Shelley's head whipped up, wide-eyed. Surely, not...
But just a while ago, she had spoken directly into his head, hadn't she?
Now a frown was inching onto his face.
"Was that how you did...that just now? You can't actually just get into my head...can you?"
Honestly, if she hadn't been able to read his mind she wouldn't have even been entirely sure what he was referring to with his emphasized 'that'. It had been such a mundane thing to her.
"It is, and... I can. Well, to be specific what you're actively thinking in the front of your mind is like you're talking to me since we have a sense for the electrical signals neurons create, but I haven't done any digging!"
She could tell he was not particularly thrilled about this information and defaulted to trying to make things better by providing even more information. Also a product of coming from such a society, deception and withholding information did not come naturally to her.
She hasn't really allowed herself to fully consider this yet, but Evienne is slowly coming to the realization that she will one day have to make a choice between ever being able to return to her home planet and keeping her new knowledge completely intact.
Since violent thoughts are illegal, if she went home any knowledge of acts of violence she got from earth would be 'confiscated'.
I think you can figure how removing everything violent would leave some pretty big holes in the understanding of human behavior.
"Nah, not really. The shadows are everywhere, so it was just a matter of time before I'd find my way here. I go to a mirror world too sometimes."
And now she got to brag about this too. It was an achievement deserving of a celebratory apple, or maybe a couple more. Erica's powers had a habit of pulling her out of trouble instead of enabling her chaos. There was no reason to worry as long as she could keep summoning fruit.
Her new mysterious friend, on the other hand, gave her much to think about as noted by the way she had tilted her head. That name was definitely something to simply come across.
"I think they named a ghost like that. You don't look like a Jack, though. You're more a Smudge, or Shadeâ No, that's going to get confusing. Loki would be fun too! Human names sound nice, but you could go for anything. I was named after a tree!"
If there was disappointment before, she certainly made up for it with enthusiasm.
When she mentioned shadows, it glanced over at the nearest significant shadows, a corridor nearby, leading to a darkened area that wasn't lit up like the current one.
"You were brought here by shadows? I didn't know they could do that. Is it like noclipping?"
It really thought about those name suggestions, eyes alight with wonder both at the concept she was presenting and the fact she was giving such thoughtful observations and ideas. It made one feel special.
"Smudge is cute... Do you think I could have a cute name?"
A pause.
"... And is an Erica a tree?"

"Nope! It's the first time the shadows have taken me here!"
Anyone else would be freaking out while to Erica, this was all an exciting new adventure. Having a reliable way of fleeing the scene certainly helped her optimistic nature. Having a snack with the first strange creature she had bumped into was a nice way to spend an afternoon.
Her enthusiasm faltered just a little when it turned out her new friend didn't have a name, the sentiment being quickly betrayed by her ears dropping in the process.
"You don't? Oh..." That was sad. "I didn't know my name for a while either. I guess you don't really need it when there aren't that many living beings around."
She doubted there was much need for gossip in a place like this. They could probably get by without names.
"Have you thought about it, though? It's still nice to have a name."
"Oh! That... must have been a surprise."
It had been hoping this was a returning visit since that would mean she had some way to leave, a fact it was both interested in but also good for her sake. It was now assuming she might end up stuck like so many others but wasn't sure if it should alarm her. Because who would've expected shadow doors?
She seemed disappointed it wasn't able to provide a name though and now it felt like it needed to make up for that, because obviously the issue here was that its new friend was disappointed.
It chewed on one of its claws, thinking.
"I found a name once. It was Jack O'Malley!"

âIt is,â she agreed. âShe is!â
Melody watched with wide eyes as Nihilâs friendâEvienne, it had called herâapproached them. Evienne merely walked around the same sorts of things it would take Melody a considerable amount of time to maneuver; her voice and each of her footsteps sent distant, yet heavy, looming vibrations through the air. Melody paced to and fro on Nihilâs shoulder, restraining herself from bursting up and toward her right then.
Her stature wasnât the only peculiar thing about her. She wore a long coat like Father and the strangers from her home always wore. Did she spend her day in a place like where Melody came from? Though there wasnât any way she would fit inside a room, or two rooms, or all the rooms combinedâŠ
âHellooo,â Melody called out, waving both arms. âYour name is Evienne? Youâre so, sooo big! I met your friend Nihil, and itâs very kind! Can you see me? I can come closer!â
It took Evienne a moment to process what she'd been told as 'talking fly' wasn't what she'd been expecting. All of the information she'd gathered from existing human research on their insect population indicated that none of them had the capacity for speech. Surely earth's scientists hadn't overlooked something like that?
But then she heard the tiniest little 'hello' calling out to her. She was quick to drop to a crouch, her eyes darting around to try and spot speaker, but locating a fly could be difficult even for humans. She was trying to find something comparatively the size of a mustard seed.
Nihil helpfully pointed her out, gesturing with an open hand to its shoulder like a gameshow hostess presenting the prize.
"Oh, hello! You're Melody then? I would love to get a closer look at you! I didn't know anything like you existed."
Honestly she wouldn't have minded going as far using a microscope to check her out. This was exciting.
Oh, he was doing more than just solving the mysteries of the sea. What Aquarias was doing was actually creating more mysteries down there. And above. And everywhere, really.
"Ah...that sounds like a broad range..." He was no longer looking up at Evienne. He briefly massaged the back of his neck. "Do you not have any category of lifeform -- however, taxonomy works for you- that you're particularly into." He figured he might as well keep an open mind here given that he was speaking with an alien.
"Oh, and what I'm working on is...well, I can't really say due to the NDA." That's a good enough reason, right? It's not like it wasn't true. He really wasn't supposed to disclose what they do down there. Or up here, for that matter.
"You know how it is, I'm sure."
"I'm especially interested in the things that go overlooked by existing scientific research on earth. For example, there are pockets of anomalousâusually humanoidâbeings that defy what human scientists say is supposed to be possible. ...Not that I'm discounting the expertise you all have on your own planet but there's an explanation for everything, right?"
And she did not, in fact, know how it was with the NDA reasoning and the look on her fact betrayed the fact she hadn't expected that response.
"I... don't, actually. We don't have an equivalent to those where I'm from since we communicate telepathically."
Sure, Evienne, let's casually drop that information to the guy that's trying to hide something.
Erica supposed she could appreciate the enthusiasm. She didn't enjoy wasting food, thus was glad she wouldn't have to banish the leftovers to the shadows or hunt for something to be eaten in her place.
"Yeah, they do. I'm from that side of things tooâ One of them, I guess. I get around a lot."
Her habit of diving into shadow doors that smelled interesting really didn't help with that. Explaining where she came from made for a convoluted story.
"I didn't know you had pools too, but I guess it just makes sense." She wasn't going to lose her appetite over it. She would however spare the banana peel. "You get an endless supply of rubber duckies⊠Ah! What's your name? I'm Erica!"
"Have you been to the Backrooms before?" it asked with a bit of surprise. Considering she seemed to be aware of the concept, had conceptions about whether pools would be there, and claimed to get around a lot.
That would've been unusual though as most people were constantly going on about trying to figure out how to leave and didn't seem to be able to. It had no idea how you would go to the Frontrooms either.
"Good to meet you, Erica! I... don't actually have a name!" it said with an awkward grin. How was it supposed to get a good grade in social interaction now if it was already failing at introductions?
