"Perhaps you could bring me to a building with access to electricity?" That would be the ideal situation, wouldn't it? Of course, this was assuming that whoever owned the building would let a humanoid construct with a blade for a forearm in.
"And no, our creation does not look like any of us." Or should they say, their other appendages (as the AI tended to think of their humanoid vessels). This stranger, however, didn't need to know about all the specifics of their being though. Most people didn't need to. It would ruin their image.
"I suppose do consider myself her parent though..." Early on when Chirptune was still newly created, the AI had actively seeked out knowledge specifically aimed towards young parents. Even now, they still find themselves looking up solutions to problems that a human parent would have to deal with.
"The owls...oh, of course. There would be more than one in a forest like this," Red One replied. "Are they all your friends?"
"And yes, somewhat. We live on the outskirts of Bayfloat."
The spirit thinks for a moment. There is actually a building not to far away. The only problem is that it has been abandoned for a long time. So she doesn't know if it still has electricity. If it still has, there would be at least no problem with anyone residing inside.
" There is a house not to far... But no one has been living there in a long time... Would that work for you? I don't know if it has... electricity though... "
Hm. If it was their creation, how comes it doesn't looks like them? How strange. Perhaps she has a different understand of how their creation should look like? Ah, her. It was still good to hear that despite her apparently looking different from them, they still considered themself her parent. She heard about over situations in which this wasn't the case.
" Hm~ Yes... I suppose I would call them my... friends~ "
Perhaps it was more something like family. Eule never had really thought about it much before. And she heard the name Bayfloat before. It wasn't to far if she remembered right.
" Bayfloat... It is the city not to far away, right? Hm~ What... made you come all the way here? "
It was good to see Eule smile. It meant she was making a good impression and she couldn't be happier for that. Five had been making things so much harder for her with his nonsense she always expected to be banned from places because of something he had done.
"He probably has no reason, but he does a lot of things on a whim and he isn't very good at respecting nature." she explained, "I'll ask some friends to keep an eye on this side of the city."
They better keep an eye on Five in general. There was no telling what he could get up to next. He had messed with ghosts before, so he was willing to bother just about anyone. Still, Rook was glad to see her small offering was being appreciated.
"I don't mind the company. Being a hunter can be a bit isolating. If I meet someone, it either ends in a fight or they're too scared to really have a chat." Rook said, taking the lead, "Why don't you tell me a bit about yourself? How long have you been in these woods?"
Ah, not one to respect nature, huh? Many humans are like that. Not caring. Not respecting. Eule wouldn't exactly call every single one of them evil though. Again, the spirit doesn't know that man, nor what had happened between him and Rook, so she won't judge for now.
" I understand... And feel free to do that... But please... don't feel obligated to go out of your way for us. "
She surely had other things to worry about, being a hunter and all that, than keeping some forest and owls safe. And if something actually did happen to the forest, the owls would simply move somewhere else. It has happened before after all.
" Ah... That sounds... sad. "
It truly does to the spirit. Why would anyone be afraid of Rook? Or start a fight with her? She seemed really nice and not out for a fight. Perhaps that just comes with the profession?
Eule then lightly tilted her head as she walked besides the hunter. The question didn't surprise her. Many had asked about herself before. Unfortunately there wasn't much to tell...
" Hm~ For a long time~ Unfortunately, I can't recall for how long exactly... Actually, I don't remember anything before I... appeared here~ How long have you been a hunter? "
Leofric had briefly wondered how this spirit would react. Would she be afraid? Would she be angered at him for being her territory? All ideas of negative feelings were knocking at him.
He would be willing to leave if she asked or otherwise reacted in a hostile manner to his presence.
"I feel it is only polite, given that you presumably have command over this particular space," Leofric said, before he then slowly got back up to hi feet, "It's force of habit as well, I will admit."
He glanced over the owls briefly, tilting his head to the side for a moment. Leofric couldn't blame them for not coming near. His aura aside, he was a dog and they were birds.
"Yes, a dog spirit whose appearance is supposed to act as a warning to those who see it," Leofric said, "But I am not here as a warning. I heard a rumour about lion's mane mushrooms growing in this area, and I had come here to gather some, if I may."
A small laugh actually leaves the spirit. He is mistaken. She does not have any authority here. No command over the forest. Not even over the owls. Eule is simply living alongside them. A quiet observer most of the time. Leofrics polite behavior was not unwelcome though.
" Hah, You are mistaken... I do not have any command over this place. "
She corrects him with a small smile. Eule did notice the black shuck glancing at the owls in the trees though their eyes and wonders if he felt threatened by them. The spirit too turns her head a little towards them, and calls one of them down to her. Not with her words, but with her mind. And with a moment of hesistation, one of the smallest ones, an elf owl, came down and took it's place on Eules shoulder. Ah, now she can look at him way better.
" I understand... I suppose if you had came here as an omen... this meeting sure would have gone... differently. "
His behavior alone told her that he wasn't here to be any kind of omen.
" Oh, so it is mushrooms you seek? There are... quite a few around the forest... Though my knowledge about them is... limited. So I don't know if the ones you seek truly grow here. "
She doesn't need to eat. So there was no reason for her to take any interest in mushrooms.
" We won't stop you from gathering. So you may... Do you mind me accompany you though? It's very rare to have visitors... that aren't human~ "
// Ngl to you guys but I am not doing well mentally rn so uh Replies and interactions might be delayed for a bit Thought just letting you all know
"No?" The android's exposed optic dimmed for a moment in a blink. Their shoulders slumped. "That is unfortunate..."
"I see...you have not dealt with machinery much, have you?" Well, it wasn't everyday anyone runs into an actual sapient machine anyways. The mechanical squadron were a rarity in that regard.
"And yes, there are more of us. Four more, in fact. Five, if we include our creation...." While Chirptune was part of their merry little band, she was not part of Fivemind's collective and so they could not claim in good faith that she was a part of the mechanical squadron.
"Do you live out here? You and your...bird?"
" I'm sorry... Is there... any other way we could help you perhaps? "
Eule doesn't exaclty know how she is suppose to help, but perhaps this machine has an idea.
" Hm, no. I haven't... I do not have any use for machinery. But most of them also... don't talk like you. "
Well, some machines do talk. But those are the small devices she had seen people talk into. Ah, yes. Phones. But while the voice came from the device, it was still a human speaking.
" Four? Do they look like you? Ah, and your... creation? Like... your child? "
Doesn't that mean creation? A child? Though what a strange way to address them if that was the case. The little owl then let out a short hoo when it was called a bird. They were right, but it still seemed to bother the little one.
" We do live here, yes~ Me and the owls. "
Owls, because she points up into the trees where many more owls were sitting and watching the machine.
" What about you? Do you and your squadron live in the city? "
@blooddrinkingbartender continued from here
Eule has felt his presence before any of the owls saw him. But something about this ones presence felt... almost a little dreadful. Or foreboding. And the spirit probably should stay away... but her curiosity got the better of her. Besides, the owls, while being cautious, didn't ran away.
And when she finally was close enough to get a look at the one travelling through the woods... Eule was surprised to see a complete normal looking human. But she knows looks can be deceiving. What Eule though hadn't expected was that Leofric, after she had asked that question, getting down on one knee and bowing to her. And... it made her chuckle?
" Oh, you are not interrupting at all. And please... There is no need to... lower yourself like that~ "
Despite his foreboding aura, he didn't seemed to be a bad person. The owls in the trees still kept their distance for now though.
" A black shuck...? I have never heard of those before... Are you usually... an omen? "
"I found her and saw one of her wings was injured, so I took her home with me."
She had been careful to not make Athena become dependent on her and all, but she had refused to go regardless. Perhaps the little owl had liked the idea of sticking with what looked like a larger bird.
"No, I definitely didn't. He did everything in his power to hurt me and doesn't care for who gets caught in the crossfire." Unless they were fully humans, in any case. "He also tends to destroy everything in his path, so I'm going to make sure he stays out of these woods. He likes playing with poisons, you see. He could make a real mess."
The Order was supposed to preserve nature as well, though what they preached rarely corresponded to what Five and his family actually did. It wouldn't have been beneath him to kill a bunch of trees and animals just to spite her.
Perhaps she could ask the ghosts to keep an eye on the area. Rook then tilted her head at the request. Well, that was easy.
"Sure. You can have a bunch." She held out the feather while reaching behind her back with her other hand. "They aren't from a real phoenix, but I've got plenty to spare."
One donated feather was one less lost around the apartment she would have to pick up later. Rook thus happily offered a handful of feathers of various colors. She then considered her options for a moment, before giving a shrug.
"I don't really mind. I might stop to grab something to eat, but that's about it for tonight. Chasing that guy wasn't that tiring."
It had been more of a jog, really. Five wasn't in the best shape at the moment.
It makes Eule smile when she hears that. Many people would have surely left Athena. So it was good to know that there were some good people who also would help an injured animal. She wasn't surprised that she decided to stay with Rook despite being able to leave.
And as Rook spoke about Five, and told her what he had done, the spirit wonders why he would do these things. Everyone had some reason for their actions... But those reasons are not necessary good ones. And Rook seemed like a nice person. So Eule doubted she had done something to cause his apparent anger towards her. But she doesn't know the whole story and wasn't one to assume.
" I understand... If you want to do that, I won't stop you... Though I don't see a... reason for him to come back. "
But she also didn't knew the man. So she wasn't sure if he truly had no reason to come back to the forest.
The spirit's face obviously lit up when her request was granted. And she is even getting more than one feather? How nice! Eule takes the offered feather and let's her hand run over it while Rook pulled some more from her wings. She also happily took the rest of the colorful ones that were offered to her. The little own on her shoulder too eyed the feathers curiosly.
" I see. Then I suppose I will... accompany you a little longer~ As long as you aren't bothered by me of course. "

It was always like that. Friendly entities were forced into hiding because they looked a little strange. It was truly frustrating.
"Oh, I didn't know. I just called her a sweet little lady at first, because she is." Rook began, a faint smile on her face, "I wasn't planning to keep her with me back then. I was just trying to make sure she healed up nicely. But then, when it was time to let her go, she just came back."
Telling the story still made her emotional even now. Athena may not have had unique abilities like some of her other pets, but she still held a special place in her heart. Though there was more rustling of feathers as Rook shook her head to get herself back on the topic. It wasn't the time to get all sappy.
"It's a good thing you didn't do that. He's really aggressive and he's just not pleasant to be around. I'm glad he's gone."
And deep down, she was glad she had missed him as well. Five was unlikely to have improved at all since last time they had seen each other.
But it seemed they had reached the edge of the forest already and truth be told, Rook was quite disappointed. It wasn't every day she got to hang out with such interesting company.
"Oh. That wasn't too far at all. Thank you for showing me the way— Both of you. I don’t have much on me but I'd like to give you something in return." Rook paused to remove a stray feather that had ended up stuck in her vambrace, "And maybe you could come visit the city sometimes. Athena would like meeting you."
" Ah, so she was hurt and you... helped her? That is very nice of you. And I suppose... she just wanted to stay by your side~ "
It wouldn't be the first time she heard something like that after all. A wild animal staying with the one that helped them back to health. Yeah. To know this made Eule think even better of Rook. She does seem like a kind soul.
The spirit didn't knew enough of the man Rook spoke of to confirm what she was telling about him. Though, there probably wouldn't have been a reason for him to attack her. At least not one that made sense to Eule. But she trusts in the phoenix words for now.
" It does sound like as if you have... bad experiences with him. "
She did say that he hurt her friends after all. Eule was also a bit disappointed that their chat will perhaps come to an end soon. She though chuckled when heared that Rook wanted to give her soemthing in return. She doesn't really needs anything- Oh, but when she removed that feather...
" You don't have to give me anything... I don't really have... much use for most things... But that feather... May I have that? As I said earlier... your wings and feathers are pretty~ And I do tend to collect feathers. "
Even though those were usually the ones of actual birds. That one sure would be special in her nest collection. The spirit also thought for a moment, before smiling. It would be a shame to have their chat end so soon. And she wouldn't mind meeting that owl friend of hers. But Eule also didn't wanted to be to intrusive.
" I could come now if you like... Oh, but don't feel... pressured. I can understand if you want to... rest after your hunt for that man. "
Send “loud lyrics” for a starter where my muse is singing loudly.
// Small little headcanon that Eule collects the feathers of the owls and other birds when they lose them. She then gathers them at a hidden place. This place is very close to a small lake. The lake where she appears again when her physical form is destroyed/killed. The place where she gathers those feathers actually does look a lot like some kind of nest. Just bigger than the average bird nest.
"Yes, it saves me from a bunch of questions and all that."
Some people would have done more than ask questions. Though it seemed they both knew and there was no need to focus on that now. Not when there were so many owls to look at instead. They were all lovely and she couldn't help but hoot back at them.
It took a moment to register, then Rook bashfully shrunk back in her own feathers a little. That was another thing she was self conscious about. But she tilted her head as Eule stared at the owl, or at least tried to.
"Oh, okay." She wasn't sure what she expected there. "I named my little owl friend Athena. We've been together for a few years."
She was definitely going to spend some time with her as soon as she got home. Rook set her planning aside when she heard the question.
"I was looking for someone. I've been chasing him for most of the night but I lost him around here." She shook her head, "He has hurt people I hold dear and I want him to stay away from them. But I don't feel his presence anymore, he must have found his way back by now."
The last thing they needed them was a nasty snake ravaging the woods.
" Yes, I can imagine. I too tend to... hide myself from the human eye... At least while I am not in the forest. "
Eule doubted though that she could hide from Rook even if she tried. It only seemed to work on completely normal humans. She also chuckled when hearing her hoot back at the owls.
The spirit then tilted her head again to the side, as she continued leading the way, when she heard Rook had also an owl as friend. None of the ones who lived here. Otherwise they would have spoken about her.
" Athena... That is a nice name~ I do believe many owls enjoy it... when they are given a name. "
She too received her own from a human after all. And while Eule didn't really cared that someone called her, it is still the name she tells others to call her when asked.
" Hm. I did feel another presence earlier as well... But I did not approach them... Mostly because it was the moment you showed up. "
And perhaps it was a good thing that she hadn't approached that person. At least she assumed he wasn't exactly nice by what Rook just told her.
" I don't believe I feel his presence anymore either though... "
Of course there was the chance that he was hiding. It wouldn't be the first time that someone hides even from her perception while in the forest. Soon though, the light of the city at the edge of the forest came into view. Eule hadn't lied about guiding the phoenix out of the woods. There was no reason for her not to do that anyway. Even though the spirit was pretty sure Rook could have found her way back as well. Especially because she had wings and probnably could have just fly high above the trees.
" Here we are~ "
"Yes, recharge," the android repeated in confirmation. Their attention shifted to and fro the spirit and owl on her shoulder. Fivemind had always found birds most endearing.
And oh! It appeared that this stranger they were talking to was unfamiliar with the concept of recharging and powerbanks. It had yet to occur to the machine that the other might just be unfamiliar with technology in general.
"I mean that...I require a source of electricity. To refill my energy reserves." This was a simpler way to put it, right? It was not. But the machine didn't know that.
"And no, I am not a human. I am not an organic being at all," Red One explained. "I am a machine. To be specific, I am a member of the Mechanical Squadron Fivemind."
Ah! Electricity! That is a word she has heard before and knows the meaning of! Eule knows that it's the power humans use to light up their houses. So this... being requires the same energy? How particular. While they surely did their best to explain it better, the spirit wasn't exactly sure how that worked.
" Hm, I think I understand... Unfortunately, I don't believe we have... the means to help you aquire a source of... electricity. At least not here. "
They were in a forest after all. There wasn't that sort of power to find as far as Eule was aware. But they weren't to far from the city. Perhaps they can get that electricity there?
" A machine... It's the first time for us... to speak to one. "
At least she knows what a machine is. Or at least the concept. The spirit just hadn't known that they can speak. Or perhaps they were just a special case.
" Hm~ I have never... heard of the Squardron Fivemind either... So are there more like you? "
It was always best to be cautious when meeting spirits in the woods. Some didn't enjoy having visits and despite the eventual danger, Rook would have felt really bad getting in a fight over something that was technically her fault.
She took a step back when Eule descended, taking a moment to look at the owl on her shoulder. She was missing Athena's more and more by the minute.
"Oh, I'm just not…used to it. I hide my wings most of the time."
And the habit of shying away from the topic when it was brought up remained even when there were no ill intentions. So it wasn't surprising that Rook had basically no idea what to do with her wings. She attempted a few flaps that made her almost lose her balance, before letting them fold behind ber back.
"Thanks, though. You look nice too and the same goes for all of you guys."
It seemed polite to say something nice to the owls as well. Rook then moved to follow along. As nice as that was, she had been in the middle of something and needed to get back to it.
"Eule. It's a nice name. You can call me Rook." She smiled faintly under the helmet, "Does your little friend have a name too?"
The owl noticed Rook looking at them and let out a low hoo while flapping it's wings a tiny bit.
" Hm~ I suppose it's... understandable that you hide your wings... Humans often don't really... react well to such things. "
Eule had her fair share of interactions with humans who didn't mean her well. Often it was because they were scared of her. Because they didn't understood what she was and saw her therefor as a threat. But it's nothing she tended to dwell on.
" Oh, thank you~ And they thank you as well~ "
The spirit chuckled while the owls in the trees started to hoo a little louder before becoming quiet again. They did not want to scare their visitor after all.
" And it is nice to meet you, Rook... Hm~? "
Eule turns her head then in the direction of the phoenix, before it went to the owl. She was basically looking at herself now through the owls eyes. And yet the woman still opened her own. They were almost completely white. A name, huh?
" No. He doesn't~ At least not one that can be spoke by us... Oh, may I ask how you did end up here? "
