“are you a top or a bottom?” i’m a threat
every single fucking thing on earth exists solely to put a dent in your newly applied nail polish
Edmund and the other pirates could only smile at the conversation they were witnessing. The youth these days were truly lucky to be free to discuss their feelings that openly.
Even as the joke didn't land with all the present, the group was still working meticulously, this time to ensure the crystals on Shade's end would be connected perfectly. It was a bit frustrating having to do so without touching any of it, but it definitely wasn't going as badly as Rook had told them to expect.
"Well, that isn't very new for me. It'd be a novelty if I had to use a crystal ball." It was a totally different shape, after all. "But hey, if it works well enough, maybe we could set things up so you can contact more people."
So the burden of relaying the city's latest gossip wouldn’t fall entirely on her. Rook grabbed some wire cutters and began tying the other end of the wire. The crystal was then positioned on the board and expertly poked to check it would stay in place.
"And that's about it. We can tape it down too later but I guess it's the time of truth. Edmund?"
"Aye!" The old captain floated over with his usual glee and shoved his hand through the board, causing the crystals to light up right away.
"Yes, apparently every human these days is used to speaking to each other through boxes." That was one way to describe cell phones.
"Now that would be useful. If I'll be using telecommunications technology anyway, I may as well take full advantage of it. Do you think a connection with Russell could be established?"
Not that Russell was here at the moment to give his thoughts on the idea, but Shade knew better than to think he would've declined. It did take some of the pressure off of Rook from being the middleman in communication.
The wire cutting step caused some frustration as he had some trouble stripping the shielding to expose the conductive innards without just cutting the whole wire. Eventually though (with some pointed exhales to meter frustration) a functioning connection was made and he pushed his work towards the center of the table.
The gears were definitely turning in his head, trying to work out a way to fight this guy without landing himself on Doc's shitlist.
"Who the fuck are you?"
Listen. If he was defending himself, Doc can't get mad, right?
He had just been getting ready to walk away and leave this guy to his standing around ominously when he finally spoke.
And what a charming opener it was.
"Perhaps you'd care to introduce yourself first."
@icangiveyouanything
There's a rather uncomfortable BONE CRACKING noise as he tilts his head in response to the 'no.'
He had never seen this guy in his life. Big though. Very big. Would be fun to fight. Unfortunately, not his assignment. Therefore, not worth engaging.
Yet.
Shade narrowed his eyes. At least he didn't appear to be doing anything so far.
"Good," he said simply when it seemed like maybe he really wasn't going to pull anything.
Remember Hank? He's baaaaaAAAAck. Only this Hank looks bigger. He just. Stares at Shade.
Oh, great. Not again.
Sure, this one looked... a little different. And technically the Hank he met before should be very dead, but the similarities were enough to immediately make him dread the encounter.
"No." He pointed at him. "Whatever you're thinking of doing, don't."
"I'm glad we agree on that. It sucks when you hold a person higher up than they do with you."
She definitely had some experience with that. Nevertheless, Rook's grimace was entirely due to some of the mystery paste spilling on her tools, as it unfortunately couldn't be simply magicked away.
"Yes, that's right. This is what you use when you don't have all of Willow's fancy tech."
"Or electricity." Edmund added.
"Yes. This type of crystals is designed after the ones powering Edmund's ship. He suggested we pick copper to stabilize the connection. That's kind of funny, actually."
That would however remain a joke between the two engineers.
"That's perfect. Then we can get on with connecting the last crystal. You should watch how I do it first. We'll see if it works quickly enough, then we just have to put the radios back together and test the connection. I never connected two pockets before, that'll be exciting."
"Indeed. I'm not unfamiliar with the concept... It can be quite frustrating when you aren't on the same page with someone about the nature of your relationship."
Though more of his had been being interested in someone who wanted absolutely nothing to do with him.
Needless to say, the engineering joke was completely lost on Shade though and only received a slow blink in reply. He wasn't even going to ask for an explanation as to why copper was funny here. He had a feeling the punchline would not have been worth it.
"I can't say I have either. Not like this, at any rate. I suppose it will be interesting talking to you through a box as well." Ok that last part wouldn't have been new for Rook.
share a physical feature of your oc's that you like a lot!
how manipulative is your oc? when do they manipulate others and how?
what is your oc's favorite fruit? if they don't like fruit, is there any that they can tolerate?
"Good friends poke each other a bit. I figured we were at a point where I could do that."
It was a small payback for the naps she had been missing out on. The ghosts were doing a good job at diverting the attention from Rook's disappointment, at least. They were the first to admit they looked silly with their phones.
"He sure is. Have you even met Josh? He likes to study on the roof sometimes." The fact they kept a pool up there probably had nothing to do with it.
But as Shade was keeping up so far, Rook motioned the pirates to get back to work. They clearly had the first step figured out, there was no need to address what had to be done to turn regular thermal paste into the formless substance they were using. She picked up the remaining crystal and let it slowly float around her index finger.
"So, the crystals you're about to place are the heart of your new radio. Once bound, they'll be sending and receiving signals across the void."
"Dat'd be 'voids', wee phoenix!" Edmund chimed in.
"Yes, it's void-to-void communication. Copper lets the spell flow orderly and connect to the third crystal, which is essentially a magic battery. Normally, I'd charge it myself. But since you've got your whole home here, the crystals will have no trouble drawing what little power they need." Rook explained, motioning to her arm, "It kinda works the same way as my marks. Does that sound good to you? I can still charge it if you don't want to mess with that."
"Yes, I suppose that's true."
Apparently he'd gotten a promotion from when Rook had initially declared them to be friends. Yes, he was keeping track of that. He'd been getting more used to the concept but it was still relatively new.
"I've not yet had the pleasure, but perhaps I'll see him sometime then." Considering how many times he'd shown up at said roof. All it'd take was Rook trying to take a nap while Josh was also there.
"So these would be the key that's allowing us to defy a radio's typical range and capabilities."
It made sense, even without a full technical explanation. Put the magical crystal in the radio to let it talk across dimensions, like attaching a special antenna.
"I believe I can handle providing energy to one little crystal. There's no shortage of energy here." Shade himself contained an impressive amount of energy himself and the rest of the dimension was a further extension of that.
That's not suspiciously ominous and vague at all...
After a long moment of pondering, the hologram begrudgingly sighed.
As much as it is a tempting offer, I think I'd rather take my chances with something else. My creator wouldn't exactly be thrilled with me negotiating for him. We're not exactly "buddies".
Shade gave a vaguely disappointed hum, but overall it wasn't like he was out anything. Running into this hologram in the first place had been nothing but a random happenstance.
"Very well, if you're certain. We can only hope you manage to find something before you're forced to resort to grave robbing."
WEEEEEEE. TEAM STATUS QUO IS BLASTING OFF AGAIN!
He probably deserved that, really.
Unfortunately, Shade was about to encounter Hank's only real use of his improbability drive. The ability to just appear like some horror movie creature. Not a minute later, Hank, who seemingly really did appear out of thin air, stared up at Shade. "Rude."
Shade heard the voice and then stopped, slowly turning his gaze downward to find Hank just... standing there. Like he'd never left.
Was this some sort of nightmare?
"WHY WON'T YOU LEAVE ME ALONE!?"
Since kicking him and throwing him hadn't worked, now he just went straight for angrily stomping on him.
Unfortunately for Hank, he was not strong enough to fight against someone that much bigger than him, even if he was going to try.
He squirmed around for a bit helplessly, before locking eyes onto Shade. He was contemplating something. Something he didn't normally do.
Fuck it.
He rubbed his face against Shade's hand the best he could to get his mask off...then CHOMPED DOWN ON SHADE'S HAND.
Really he should have seen that reaction coming. With the irrational, stubborn persistence he'd shown so far, of course he would try that.
Either way, Shade let out a shout that was a mix of shock and rage before proceeding to yeet Hank like a baseball.
Then he immediately starts inspecting his hand to see if the bite had broken skin. Who knows what kind of diseases that thing could have?
Hologram Rick paused at this. He may not be his creator, but he had enough downloaded memories to know what his creator was like. One thing was for sure: he did not like doing favors. Especially if someone else was offering them. It probably wasn't the best idea to speak for his Rick, but the fact that Shade may be able to obtain a body was too tempting.
Wh-Wh-What is it that you even want? You don't seem like a guy who needs much help with anything...
"Oh, it's really quite a simple request. It will take but a small moment of his time and will hardly be any trouble at all, but it would be tremendously helpful to me."
"All he would have to do is open his mind and allow us to make a little 'connection'."
The hologram sighed in exasperation. Right. If this was Morty, he would've done this favor without question, but unfortunately for Hologram Rick, this was very much not Morty.
Well is there anything that you even want? Money? Information? That's about as much as I can offer.
"I suppose there isn't a lot a hologram can do, is there?"
That was disappointing. His usual go-to request wasn't going to work here.
"What about your creator? Surely he must be willing to agree to something in exchange for essentially bringing him back from the dead?"
