Fletcher gulped down the whiskey but she couldn’t get it down fast enough. The bottle shook in her hand as she brought the mouth of the bottle to her lips. She was desperate not to feel, to forget the horrors she had brought upon herself.

As she gulped for air memories flashed and she couldn’t fight the tears welling in her eyes. Sable’s corn silk colored hair matted and turned the color of rust, her soft delicate skin bruised and broken, those blue eyes filled by the shadow of death. Fletcher’s throat began to tighten as she reached for the bottle once more but before she could get it to her lips a choked sob filled her chest. It had been a week since she found her lover, tied to a chair and left to rot and it was all her fault. She saw the bounty hunters around town, she knew she had been getting careless but she thought she was better than them, she thought she was invincible.

Fletcher never imagined she would return home from a hunting trip to find her home ransacked and the love of her life beaten to death. It was all too much for her, the smell of death was still fresh in her nostrils and if she thought about it too hard she would lose the contents of her stomach. The day she found Sable she barely remembered stumbling out of their home and into the salon but she’s been there ever since.

The bartender knew her, of course he did. Living in a small town like Tumbleweed everyone knew everyone and their business. He always suspected something between the young outlaw and the daughter of the ranch owners just outside of town but he assumed everyone had their own business. He felt great pity for the woman drinking herself into madness and she never made much ruckus so he allowed her to stay as long as she needed.

In a few weeks Fletcher will wake up with her head throbbing and instead of reaching for another drink she’ll reach for her pistol. Her tears will dry and the aching in her heart will be replaced with a cold hatred, one that would lead her on the journey to track down and kill the flesh hunters that took all that was good from her. But for now she’ll order another drink, and another drink, until she forgets what it’s like to feel.
