biography.

There’s not much to speak of for the short life of Theo Donovan. Her father is loving and doting, her aunt an inspiration to be more like as she grows ever older, but there’s always been a sense of longing ... something unfulfilled. It’s that very fact that’s kept Theo back for a while, dilly-dallying on choosing path to walk down in college or even making up the simplest of decisions. The truth is, for as loved and supported as Theo has been in her entire life, she’s always felt as if she was lacking in some fashion, and admitting that has been a difficult process.

She’s not sore for having a single parent - her father’s always been more than she could ever really need in her life. Never left wanting and always with a hot meal for dinner and clothes on her back, Theo struggled with identifying just why it was she felt less-than, so other and outside of herself. Internet culture and a whole generation of people her age that felt it necessary to self-diagnose suggested that she had depression but it was difficult for her to understand why. Surely there were people with harder lives that suffered something like that, it made little to no sense why she would feel the same way when there was nothing for her to rightfully complain about. She struggled quietly with the burden, even allowed it to hold her back from a year in college (something she feels entirely disappointed in herself for) before she could admit to herself that there was something wrong - and subsequently seek help for it.

But she’s always been a quiet girl, just a little strange, though kind and generally good-natured. Her interests have always lay with the darker things in life (the occult, horror films, H.P. Lovecraft mythos in its entirety, ouija boards, and tarot readings ---even if she doesn’t practice any sort of wiccan or pagan culture) which made her decision to ultimately pursue a career in forensic science something to chase. Admittedly her admiration for her aunt certainly held strong sway in that decision - something to do with law enforcement without being an officer of the law outright. It’s something she has passion for, despite being a difficult emotion to express.

At the end of the day she’s simply striving to do herself and her family proud, to do right by them for all of the support and love they’ve always provided. The simplest journey of self-discovery in the easiest attempts to show herself the care she deserves, even if she’s still struggling to believe that she deserves it.

Aly had finished her shift at nine that evening, having been there since the place had opened. Being her, however, she wasn’t quite ready to be going home, instead opting to spend the next few hours on the other side of the bar, knocking back a few drinks and spending the night dancing away with whoever would give her the pleasure of their company. “Come on.” She stated, lifting the others glass from their hand and placing it on the bar, before pulling them into towards the middle of the floor. “The least you can do is come and dance with me.”

“Oh, me dancing? Not the best of ideas. Karaoke I can be convinced to do. Dancing? Nope.” She was already remiss for her drink being pried from her. There were a great many things Theo had promised herself she would try at least once, but blatant public humiliation was not high on that list. Or really, on the list at all. Her eyes were stuck on the shape of the glass as it hung out atop the bar counter (she’d just order another one whenever she got back, it was never smart to leave a drink unattended in the open like that) as her mind churned with how she could politely worm out of the invitation. “Seriously, I have about as much rhythm as a rock. Which is to say ---none.”

location: rooftop of anywhere

The sound of the door to the rooftop slammed shut caused Levi’s shoulders to hunch. His once relaxed posture stiffened and the inhale of his cigarette stopped midway. He didn’t turn to see who had been the mastermind behind the action, but whoever it was in Levi’s mind, they were nothing short of an idiot. “Try the door, genius.” His voice was monotone and the cigarette was plucked from between his lips with the lanky male yet to look anywhere but ahead at the faded skyline. And he waited, waited for whoever it was to try that door and come to the realization that they had now locked them both on the rooftop. He also waited for the muffled cursing or whatever version of berating themselves they had chosen before he finally did turn. This time with a long draw of his cigarette before it was held between his fingers as Levi caught sight of who was to blame. “Do you still want me to say it?”

Light eyes glared at the door as it slammed behind her, though there was nothing to be done for the slam once it happened. With a slightly irritated sigh she moved away, toward the edge of the building but a decent distance between the next body and herself, and slipped her hands into the pocket of her coat. It took only a moment to dig up her own pack of cigarettes ---something she’d been working on since a week and a half before Christmas (she didn’t smoke often, obviously), and press one between her lips, and then to light it. The stream of smoke left her nostrils in one steady plume and only when Theo plucked it from her lips to flick the ash away did she turn those same hues to her rooftop companion. “Say what? The door was loud?”

Or heavier than expected. She was, unfortunately, unaware that it had locked behind her.

Theo: They're just so engaging. I try really hard not to blow through the issues but sometimes the story get more compelling and I just can't put it down. But ... I expect nothing less from Gaiman, really.

You didn’t say what you want though, and-” with a brief glance up, Benjamin saw a waitress wave them down, indicating an available table. “-I think you’ll want a menu. Come on.”

Theo nodded, following Benjamin along to whatever table was available, lead by the waitress who seemed more like an aircraft marshal than anything else. When they sat Theo happily took a menu and smiled at the waitress, glancing quickly over the options as to keep her companion from waiting too long (considering how hungry he was). “They have three cheese ... something seems so gooey and delicious about that.” And just before the waitress could dismiss herself she ordered ---“Two slices of three cheese pizza for me ... and an oreo milkshake. And a pepperoni and pineapple pizza with a rocky road milkshake for my friend. Thank you.”

Flowers and me are like Drag queens and bible studies.” He joked. “ I honestly have no clue what I am looking for so any help would be great.” He walked along with his hands in his pockets for a while and smiled at her. “ So how’s things with you?” He asked as he shivered against the cold. “ What you been up to during the holidays?”

“Fiancée.” Theo repeated, correcting herself and as if trying to commit it to memory. She adjusted her hands, shifting them into the pockets of her black pea coat to save the tips of her fingers from the biting chill as she went. “Spooky things I can do. They’re something of a specialty.” Considering who she was as a person ---Theo always had a preference for the occult, horror, anything that toed the line of strange. She even looked the part, save for the bleach white face makeup and black lipstick to match. “I can get you sorted, certainly.” She allowed a moment of silence to fill the air between them before she nodded her head, “They’re not bad. A break from classes has been nice. I’ve spent a bit of time with my dad, which I enjoy, and my aunt. My best friend is leaping from crisis to crisis but I think everything feels like one, to her. She’s been busy with her son.” And she shrugged, seeming so much less interesting than anyone else around her (to herself, at least). “The usual. How about you? Outside of flower problems.”

“me too!” johan was perhaps a little too enthusiastic with his response, but he’d been dying to share his love for the creatures and considering it was all he ever really knew, he couldn’t help but to get excited. “cats?” he then quirked a brow, “you know, i would say they’re more like dogs. they like being pet!” the man chuckled, “you gotta catch them on a good day of course, so maybe that’s a little more cat-like. they’re definitely inquisitive though, clumsy creatures, really.” he explained, glancing back up to the ceiling. “i think that’s what i love most about them though. they look scary but deep down, they’re actually really sweet and just want to go about their day-to-day shark life, y’know?”

“Cats like being pet, too. Just on their terms. Depends on the personality, I suppose.” She had more of a fondness for cats than dogs, favoring the vast differences in their behaviors versus the blind loyalty of the latter (and a bad experience with a large dog when she was younger may have had something to do with that). “There’s something beautiful in the way they’re just ... existed. Like the great whites, never evolving beyond what they are because they’re perfect apex predators. But still having that goofiness to them. I admire them for it ---perfect but flawed.” Theo nodded, staring upward still at a passing shark and admiring the sway of its tail as it adjusted and changed direction. “I think that’s an allegory for all of us ---just trying to go about our day-to-day lives.” She paused for a moment, then dropped her eyes down to her excited companion, “What does it feel like? Petting one? Do you know from experience or was it conjecture?”

“Well, I’m sure that if it took into account the stuff I listen to on vinyl, the results would be a bit different,” Van conceeds, scrolling through the additional commentary of her results and laughing softly to herself. 

“I mean, if someone told me sincerely to my face that I had shit taste in music, I would probably start swinging. But this is all in good fun, you know? You gotta be able to laugh at yourself and an AI dragging you for your music library seems like a pretty innocuous way to do it. It’s like the opposite of a Spotify wrapped – who was your top artist?”

“Oh, but the sound quality on vinyl is always so much better. In my freshman year of college, back home, I made friends with a music major. He did sound engineering and production, all that fun stuff. Before him I was just as uninitiated as most of the people in the world, but after him I learned to hear the difference in recording styles. Vinyl is just ... even after so long, it’s wonderful. Something about the way the sound is compressed and maintaining the quality of it. So the Spotify robot might mock you for what you’re listening to on vinyl, but the robot is clearly behind on taste if it thinks your medium is worth mocking.” There were some things that made it easier for Theo to open up to strangers on, topics of interest that made it so she couldn’t stop once she started ---anything she found remotely interesting was on that list. Once she finished her explanation she realized she’d gone on the slightest of tangents and pressed her lips into a thin line, apology written across her features.

“Son Lux,” Theo answered the query easily enough, breathing a soft sigh through her nose as she did. “It’s always Son Lux, though. I tend to listen to just ... songs more than artists. They’re the only band that I think I like everything I’ve heard of them ... usually there’s tracks I’m not fond of, then just pick and choose from there. Who was yours?”

Ryan: at the very least, I can get an idea of what you're looking for.

Theo: I have the first twenty issues. So I suppose starting at twenty-one would be good.

Theo: Though I blow through them quickly. I usually save up and order five at a pop.

Ryan: I bought this little shop...and I plan to turn it into a comic book store. It's going to have memorabilia, figurines, trading cards and of course, comics.

Theo: I've been looking to expand my collection of The Sandman but I can't find anywhere nearby to do it.

Theo: And I'd rather shop in person than online. So, in short ... yes.

if johan wasn’t at home then you could safely assume that he was at the aquarium; it seemed even on the days he wasn’t working, he’d find himself just sat in front of the glass, watching as fish and other sea creatures peacefully swum by without a care in the world. his favourite was to sit beneath the shark walkway, the glass ceiling a fantastic opportunity to watch as the sand tiger sharks would gracefully swim above and over your head. it was whilst sat on the floor there that he spotted someone looking puzzled, so he carefully stood himself and gave them a tap on the shoulder, “they’re incredible, aren’t they?” he said, “they look so menacing with their teeth like that, but are such a docile species.” @amorestart​

“I just like sharks,” Theo admitted softly, eyes stuck upward on one of the creatures as it swam by. They always looked like they were dancing their way through the water, sleek motions in pleasant time with some tempo no one outside of themselves could hear. There was certain peace in the aquarium, a silence that seemed to echo through the walkways even when there were droves of people passing through, as if the water all around them commanded absolute tranquility at all given times. Theo imagined she could fall asleep here, if such things were socially acceptable. “The cats of the ocean, and I very much love cats.”

“Have you tried this ‘Spotify Shame Bot’ thing?” Van asks, her nose wrinkled in disdain as she leans hunched over her phone, fretting over her results. If she didn’t have her excellent taste in music, then what did she have?

(A sparkling personality, but that goes without saying.)

“It’s this thing that goes through all of your music and then tells you how ‘basic’ your tastes are – which don’t get me started on how ‘basic’ is just a construct to shame teenage girls for liking things– but mine said that I’m…” her voice trails before she reads the results from her phone. “‘Witch-pop-too-many-feelings-eyeliner-and-screaming-cottagecore…”

With a sheepish eyes, she looks to the other. 

“That is kinda dead on, isn’t it?”

“I haven’t.” Though Theo could hardly imagine why she’d want the very thing she used to listen to music to tell her why her taste was bad. In good fun, sure, but it still seemed ... well, exactly as the other had suggested. She only allowed the mobile app to wrap up her year so she could have a neat playlist of the music she’d clearly been stuck on right there ---zero effort on her behalf to compile it all in one place. The mouthful of words to sum herself up (or the ai’s words) had Theo chuckling softly, bright eyes tracing over her companion for a moment before she settled back on her face. “There’s nothing wrong with any of that.”

She took a moment to pause, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, “I’m more than willing to believe mine would chastise me for the amount of metal, grunge, and EDM I have on it. Who knows what interesting mouthful they’d come up with. But if it’s generated to be a judgy thing, who cares, right?”
