Persona 5 The Gaybreakers Design Mockup

I think I’ve found a good balance between keeping the environments fresh and retaining the liveliness of P5. This way I can reduce environments to whatever’s necessary to each area without being drastically inaccurate.
In Yongen-Jaya in particular, there is only the Second-hand Shop, Takemi, Medical Clinic, Cafe Leblanc, and the Bathhouse.
Excluded are places like the movie theater, supermarket, the Sakura residence, and batting cages (proficiency will increase a different way).
This style is also a simpler way to draw the environments. I like to think of the buildings more as UI this way.
In general, I’m a lot happier with the new direction. I feel like I can create environments faster and make them look stronger.
After all this, I’m going to take a small break from this for job-hunting, but these are my next set of plans:
Completed pause menu. I was hoping to show off more, but I ended up not getting it done. A mockup video of the completed test menu will be the next major update instead. I think it works better that way. The pause menu is a big monster by itself, it should have it’s own separate video. I can move forward with what I have right now, so I can work on the two things back and forth.
Start working in the engine. I’m likely going to work in Unity, but so far I’ve found it very non-user friendly for beginners. The online tutorials and support is expansive though, I think I can figure it out with time.
I’m considering maybe switching to Ren’py, a pre-built visual novel engine. A lot of what I’ve shown off is also possible in Ren’py with tons of base script tweaking, and I don’t have to start building from scratch like Unity.
It’s currently a toss up which one I might use. I’m going to try out Unity first and see how it goes.

(And before you ask: yes, I will consider asking for volunteer help later. Before any of that happens, however, I want to decide on the engine for the game. If you’d like to offer help in some way, hold off on it for a wee bit longer. I’ll make a post about it after some work on a build has been made.)
