    In true Ludger Kresnik fashion, the man acted without thinking. See, the last time he had been in this part of Rieze Maxia, he had learned the hard way just why these were called smokeshrooms. His eyes hadn’t stopped burning for hours. And Milla, while it was true that she was from here and likely aware of consequences, did not seem to have her eyes turned downward to see her impending fate: stepping right into a patch of them.

    So he scurried up behind her, arms wrapping around her waist before his brain could catch up to the implications of his honorable actions. He tugged her back into him, saying, “Whoa, hey- watch out-!” With a smile, he gave a little half-laugh. He half gestured down to the shrooms. “Close one- don’t wanna step on those. But maybe we can make a stew?”

    With a low moan of Heyyyyyyyy-, Ludger watched mournfully as his pillow was repurposed, flying through the air and landing with a dense thump against the wood floor in the corner of his room. As Presa, fluid as a cat, melded further into the mattress, Ludger grumbled, “I sleep here. It’s got all my DNA on it.” He pouted up to her from where he was splayed over her, saying, “I am my own wall, and I wil’n’t be moved!”

    As if to reaffirm his domain, Ludger pressed down on Presa, as if he were hoping that he could shove her through the mattress to assert dominance. It wasn’t even a good bed, but it was damn well his, and he couldn’t afford to replace it! Unlike Presa’s liquor, his drink was placed on the bedside table, and while he pushed, he reached over, snagged a generous sip, then replaced it. 

    With a barked laugh, he said, “The cat’s not in on our turf war! Winner gets Rollo as a snuggle buddy-!” .... the cat would choose Presa anyway. Rollo loved him, yes, and they snuggled daily, but there was something about Rollo and girls....
