The number of temples in South East Asia is equivalent to the number of churches in Europe. They are on every corner it seems. I’m still so drawn to how beautiful, unique, and colorful each temple is. All set with my $1 rental bike, I went to explore the town with a couple friends. We stumbled upon this temple near the market. A lady selling yellow flower offerings caught my eye at the entrance.
Up to Hoi An
After exploring the south, we headed up to a beautiful UNESCO world heritage site, Hoi An. It is a beautiful town with yellow-hued buildings that you will find no where else. I arrived to a rainy Hoi An with my boyfriend (Ryan) and two traveler friends only to discover that the town had flooded. We huddled under a store entrance to escape the rain after an already tiring day of travel. Ryan proceeded to jump on the back of a moped with TWO other Vietnamese men, and they drove around the town looking for a place to stay.
The heros of the day finally found a guesthouse for us and we were ecstatic to shower and go to bed. Fortunately the next couple days were nothing but sunshine.
On our last day in Saigon, I managed to take these photos driving to the airport. The endless amount of scooters here really something I'd never imagine I'd see. I can't help but be terrified at the thought of having to drive my own scooter on these streets.
In Search of Pho
I went strolling through a day market in Saigon with the boy and a couple friends, in search of “the best pho in town.” Of course, we proceeded to run around in circles, completely lost in a day food market. Fortunately, it was a nice pocket of homey Vietnamese culture. It was the first time I really felt like I was in Saigon, rather than in any other gigantic city. The distractions of the colorful fruit and bustling shoppers helped curb my craving for this infamous pho. Finally, after about an hour of wandering around, we found it. Here are a few photos from the market.

Making Vermicelli
On a tour of the Mekong River, I was taken to a small farm where rice noodles are made. These rice noodles are called vermicelli and are used in many Vietnamese dishes. It was really interesting to see how these noodles are made. The mixture is flash steamed and the rolled onto bamboo racks to be dried in the sun. Once the tortilla shaped "noodle" is completely dried out, they shred it into thin noodles. Here are some photos of the vermicelli being laid out to dry.
Coachella line-up is out, and all of California has begun circling the weekends of April in their calendars. It's that time again to plan housing rentals, carpooling, and telling everyone you know that you'll just have to meet up at Coachella (because let's face it, everyone you DO know will be there). Counting down the days!
Hi again! I know it's been MONTHS since I've been on here, but I've been backpacking through South East Asia for the past 2 months. I thought it would be possible to blog on the go, but doing that without a laptop proved to be more of a challenge than I thought.
These photos were taken in the floating market in the Mekong Delta near Siagon, Vietnam where I began my trek.
Good Morning, Vietnam!
Landed in Siagon, Vietnam with Ryan a few days ago to meet a good friend from college and it's been a blur of scooters, pho, and amazingness already. We met my friends at our hostel, Siagon Backpacker's. We stayed there for two nights at $15 a night. It was a decent place, but I expected a bit more for $15.
After hugs and greetings, we signed up for a tour on the Mekong Delta. The tour was a bit like being herded like cattle to various shops and farms where people expected you to buy anything from fruit magnets, to ceramic dishes. The tour's only redeeming quality was it's homestay option which we decided to do.
A short motorized canoe ride later, we arrived at a charming place of a Vietnamese family along the Mekong Delta. It felt so good to be away from the crowded tours and in the peace and quiet of a riverside home.
We spend the night with around 10 others, playing cards, eating river fish, and drinking what they call "happy water." I tried the happy water, and after deciding that it tasted toxic, stuck to the 333 beer, which is so refreshing.
Our next stop is Hoi An, which is supposed to be lovely.
These are all over Jeju Island right now. These plants are the equivalent of autumn leaves in Jeju.
In Jeju Island, there is something called an "Olle." Olles are long coastal walking trails around the island, to showcase beautiful areas on Jeju. They're usually around 13-16 km, with some trails shorter, and some trails longer.
Last Friday was one of those days when if you're not outside you feel guilty because it's so lovely out, so a friend and I decided to walk Olle 10. Olle 10 starts in Hwasun Beach on the west side of the island, and ends in Moseulpo (14 km).
I think what is so nice about Olles is that they're somewhere in between steep hikes and leisurely walks.
