what my family heard:
2017 mood: “I am Not Going to Kill the Entire Executive Branch of Government But If Something Happens to Them Then It Happens to Them”
I was giving some lectures in Germany about the death penalty. It was fascinating because one of the scholars stood up after the presentation and said, “Well you know it’s deeply troubling to hear what you’re talking about.” He said, “We don’t have the death penalty in Germany. And of course, we can never have the death penalty in Germany.” And the room got very quiet, and this woman said, “There’s no way, with our history, we could ever engage in the systematic killing of human beings. It would be unconscionable for us to, in an intentional and deliberate way, set about executing people.” And I thought about that. What would it feel like to be living in a world where the nation state of Germany was executing people, especially if they were disproportionately Jewish? I couldn’t bear it. It would be unconscionable. And yet, in this country, in the states of the Old South, we execute people – where you’re 11 times more likely to get the death penalty if the victim is white than if the victim is black, 22 times more likely to get it if the defendant is black and the victim is white – in the very states where there are buried in the ground the bodies of people who were lynched. And yet, there is this disconnect.

I have my issues with Germany, and by no means is it a non racist country, but this is very true. They do have to handle things so much more carefully

How do I know I am a millennial? I require no explanation for anything entertaining. I show my folks a funny video of a cockatoo having an argument with a dude jumping on its empty cage, and they’re like, Where did you find this? Why is that happening? I don’t know. I don’t care. It was on the Internet. That’s the only context I can give you.
the bar for 2017 is set so low it’s incredible
if we avoid nuclear war in 2017 it will have been a smashing success but even that’s up in the air
This time last year: what will be the last meme of 2015???
now: what will be that last horrifying real current events story of 2016???

hey y'all do actors get a predetermined amount of money that stays the same despite the movie/tv shows success or is it like they get a certain % so if it does badly they get shit pay but if it goes well they become super rich?
As far as I know actors get a contract that states how much they’ll get paid for x amount of time. Now if the show/movie does well and they go and make season 2/sequel they can get raises and stuff. But usually just a predetermined amount
that’s good if the movie tanks but shit if it like breaks records w/ profit
Actually from a profesh actor it generally works like this (but not always): the actor/the actor’s agents and lawyers negotiate a contract with the studio/producers who agree to pay a fixed amount for the specific work, and a percentage of the residuals AKA whatever money the film makes that is profit (above the amount already invested in the film). If the film makes a ton of profit, the actors also get a percentage of that profit. If the film tanks, the actor still makes their fixed fee.
This can change in different circumstances - I think in the original star wars, one of the actors (I don’t remember who, sorry) decided to forego his fixed fee and instead asked just for a slightly larger percentage of the residuals, and made hella money (obviously).
In tv, lots of times big name actors make tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars PER EPISODE plus residuals if the show ever makes it to syndication (which is another topic entirely), all depending on the type of contract.
Hope this helps??
