Final Reflective

Throughout this communication class I have learnt a lot about the design industry as a whole, from the very first concepts of design to the abstract to the post modern. My main objective in the course was to learn as much as possible in the history of design, this was overwhelming but a great and indulgent experience. Having not known much about the Memphis group or even the Bauhaus School in Weimar, Germany, everything seems to come from the roots and grows beyond the skyline in design.

The challenges I faced was working towards a deadline rather then having your own free time to work on it. This motivated me more to produce and solidify real concepts and ideas that I can work towards, and be ultimately proud of my own work. I really enjoyed putting together my first zine, the concept of physically holding your own design rather then viewing it on a screen or on a piece of paper was a lot more satisfying. I am looking forward to creating a lot more zines and working with other artists to exhibit their work and my own.

One thing that I didn’t expect was also how satisfying it is to bring up the phrase ‘Incunabula’ in a conversation.

Collage exercise where we were asked to create letterforms from objects selected from magazines. I was able to create this effect by repeatedly scanning and cutting out parts of this acrobatics photo till the X revealed itself. The entire effect of this work is altered again and again by changing the background of the cut outs.

The last project “Ask me anything” for Communication Design Studies grap2199 completed and submitted. Zine around A5 size, cover made with a thick plastic sheet and a flyscreen on the back. Was a joyful process as that was my first experience of making a zine and something that I’m going to continue with.

In the final lecture we looked at historical movements, designers and design collectives and key design concepts that we shared over this 12 week lecture series. Andy and Karen then discussed how the lectures then related to the work shops we had, this was useful and effective to recap all the knowledge we just had been fed. I was feeling rather nostalgic looking back at over the weeks, having been introduced to so many different ideas and concepts it vastly widen my knowledge of the design industry.

In class we discussed and shared our ideas on the zines we had created. It was really cool too see what everyone had came up with. Everyone’s assignment was unique, individualistic and matched there own design style.

Week 10

WHY DESIGN? you might ask, well Andy and Karen showed the cohort a number of historical movements in which design has been the forefront for. Symbols such as the iconic peace sign and the notorious rainbow LGBT flag, to the Canadian organisation of Adbusters. I find that the controversial designs are the most clever yet hated, making someone’s jaw drop is what its all about.

In the class, we dug deeper into creating and formatting our zine ideas. Learning about the difference between a  franken-model and a prototype was crucial. I was feeling rather erratic and controversial from the lecture, so I went for a more ‘Fuck the system’ with my franken-model. You were able to read my model both portrait and landscape, I made the front disgusting and filthy and kept the back completely untouched. I did this because everyone is mostly concerned on how the front is presented and the back side is often unforgotten about. I really enjoyed this lesson.

Week 9

In the lecture Andy exhibitted past students ‘Ask me anything’ projects, this was quite useful to grab an understanding on what the overall finished product might look like. More into the lecture we looked at how the computer changed everything within graphic design via improved tools and methods. We then looked at the highly influential Memphis Group which designed  postmodern furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass, and metal objects from 1981 to 1988. This group was directed by  Ettore Sottsass.

In the classroom session Andy and Karen provided a chatoic hands on seen filled with magazines and oddly cut out shapes. We were asked to find letter forms within the designs and ads found in the magazines. Me and my classmates Timon, george, lachy and adam got a bit freaky deaky and came up with some pretty cool mockups. Andy then showed me the wild technique of photocopying the glued down posters and printing them double sided. It turned out not too shabby!

Week 8

In wee 8 we looked deeper into the Bauhaus house into their course’s structure and learning. Also looking at how asymmetry changed the whole game on how we layout our documents. “The future demands a whole person” was a key factor that spoke out to me in the lecture.

In the workshop we started to think about how we are going to put together our interview, Andy and Karen had printed out A3 sizes of paper with instructions on how to fold a zine together. This was very useful, I thank them.

Week 7

In the lecture we looked at  the Bauhaus school, is described as the original "makerspace" Fun Fact! Bauhaus actually translates to "Construction House" the school was founded by Walter Gropius. The school was shaped by the 19th and early-20th centuries trends such as Arts and Crafts movement, which had sought to level the distinction between fine and applied arts, and to reunite creativity and manufacturing.

In the workshop Andy and Karen led us on a quest to find lettering in our own environment, looking to find new perspectives and higher thinking of the shapes around us. My favourite one is the ‘T’ hiding underneath the dirt.
