The dark consumes everything. If you can’t see anything, it forces you to feel everything. It gives you a reason to stop and really feel the things you would otherwise shut out.

Book Review || Spilled Milk by K.L. Randis
Spilled Milk is a book that brings awareness to the trauma that a child and a family can go through when dealing with a sexual abuser and domestic violence. I originally came across this book due to a Tik Tok the author herself created (if I can find her @, I’ll insert it here). In the Tik Tok, she was talking about how her mother passed away recently, and even though she had 5 other siblings, the author had to go back to the home she was sexually abused in and clean it out. I was intrigued and kept scrolling through her profile to find out her father had sexually abused her at a young age and continued to do so until she decided to speak out about it. Her mother had also known about this abuse, but turned a blind eye to it and the author only found out once cleaning out the house and finding the letters her parents were sending to each other.
Spilled Milk is her truth. This book is classified as “fictional realism” meaning that the author had changed some of the scenarios in the book to protect herself and/or her family members, but it doesn’t make it any less painful to read. The book itself is an easy read in terms of language and sentence structure; however, in terms of content, it’s really heavy and eye opening. She paints the picture in how she believed her family life and the daily abuse occurring was normal.
All it took was a glass of spilled milk - hence the title - for her to understand that it wasn’t normal and that no child should live in constant fear and pain.
“There was the overturned glass, the spilled milk, but his father didn’t yell, hit, or throw anything. The reaction that I had anticipated never came, and it left me standing at my chair in flight mode without a reason”
She takes us through her journey as a survivor and how many people it took before she became comfortable enough and had the strength to open up about her sexual abuser. This book gives us insight as to how a child’s life may seem perfectly fine, but there’s things hidden beneath the surface and the only way to know is if the child is willing to speak up. Through her book, she teaches us how to create a safe space for children and how to help children who are going through abuse. Despite going through emotional and sexual abuse, having to protect her siblings, and suffering through other trauma, she manages to remain strong and be courageous in telling her truth so others don’t have to go through what she did.
I don't understand how my body can be full of everything bodies are full of -- bones and muscles and blood and organs -- yet my chest sometimes feels vacant, as if someone could scream into my mouth and it would echo inside of me.

I wonder if humans are the only living creatures that ever feel hollow inside.

People who care about each other should be kind and supportive and faithful. Unfortunately life doesn’t always follow the rules.

He’d made his choice, he was getting everything he wanted, but he didn’t seem all that happy about it.

In war, truth is the first casualty.
It's for you to decide who you want, and it's for me to decide who I want. If we choose each other, that's a happy ending. Anything else is doomed to fail.
