It’s crazy how Frank was actually rewarded in the finale for being himself, especially with the through line of the season being for the Gang to just be themselves and to not play roles. When Samantha tells Frank that she was busy pretending to be someone she wasn’t while he was out there being exactly who he is, she tells him that’s what she loves about him. Meanwhile, the rest of the Gang are still putting on a show. They’re still wearing the outfits Dennis chose for them and they are still following the script. They are still playing into who they should be rather than being themselves, and they’re punished for it. While Frank is sharing a kiss with Samantha in the rain, getting his romcom ending, the rest of the Gang are covered in goo and bald, barely able to speak, on national television. The show is telling the Gang that if they break away from the structure they will be rewarded. If Frank’s version of breaking away is leaving Charlie and finding love, then what does that mean for the rest of the Gang?
