RETROPHILE(S)

MAVEN :

The harsh pounding that sounded from downstairs through the floorboards tore through my sleep. I jolted up only for my skull to meet the wooden post with a crack. My eyes stung with warm , blurry and rusty colours as I blinked them open. I then realised that my wired headphones were still around my neck and my ipod on my pillow. It was playing ‘WILDFLOWERS’ by Billie Eilish, who was a popular singer from over a hundred years ago. Her silence-drowning voice could keep me quiet for as long as I let her voice swirl in my head over and over. But now? Her voice and song were the reason I found myself drowning in that dream –– in that nightmare.

I shook the weird feeling off and got to my feet. Another loud ,vibrating thud from downstairs sounded in the bedroom. This was the chaotic yet idyllic bedroom hall of ours ; the entire room had no windows , only lamps for the light of day and night . And we never went outside — because no door led to it. The walls were a dark navy with patterns of pale pink roses and bees printed on it. And there was moss growing in the corners of the room and ceiling above that provided us with all the air we needed. We had one huge bathroom on the left and on the right was more clutter of old patched brown and scruffy teddy bears scattered all over and dusty abandoned nursery books. I stumbled to the wardrobe , its polished wood glimmering in the warm light provided by the light bulb lights on the ceiling and lamp on the desks as I opened it with a small yawn.

I sloppily chose the clothes I wanted to wear , anything boring was fine really. I just felt quite the monotonous type this slow, chilly morning. I slipped into the bathroom and changed into my brown flannel pants and a plain over-sized black tee. I looked in the mirror, fearing I had pale patches on my olive tanned skin or white strands in my dark ebony wolfcut , short hair just like in the dream.

Nothing.
