This is rather heartbreaking as SCV is one of my favorite corps, but moreover, the designers, educators, and cast members of SCV and other corps facing similar fates having their summer’s taken away from them due to the unsustainable nature in fielding a corps within the Drum Corps International circuit.

A corps that has never missed finals since 1972 will miss it this summer due to it being astronomically expensive to operate a drum corps.

I’m sad and I’m sure SCV cast members and friends are devastated tonight, so reach out to them please.

Drum corps fans, let’s talk it out.

Man, just really sucks, huh? Like, we’ve had plenty of corps drop in recent years, some dropped wholesale without a prayer of returning, but this one feels different.

SCV was the group that had everything. They had that storied history (top 5 in number of titles, only group to never miss a finals, held crown for highest score for a more than a decade) but they also could rebuild themselves too. Had the peak run in the late 80s, then stepped back for a while until they pop with a title share in 99. Then they do that all again but even more so, spent a bit of time down in the mid pack of finals, then in front of god and everyone built themselves into a title winner in 2018. They were the kind of group that showed you didn’t have to be the Blue Devils to win where you already have all the base in place and now its all about standing at the top. You could build up a corps over the course of a decade still, and they did it with shows that kicked ass. Music of The Starry Night is an underated classic, Les Mis was a Drum Corps Ass Drum Corp Show, Spark of Invention was a super different vibe to anything else on the field that year. Then, they built one of the great dream teams of all time too with that 2018 corps. Rennicks on drums, Shaw on horns, and Gaines on visual, that’s legend on legend on fuckin legend. They made something that was impossible to ignore and if there is an activity 20 years from now that show aughta be talked about the same way we used to talk about Cavies 2006 or Cadets 2011. They were past, present, and future of the activity all at once.

And, like, there’s still plenty room to be optimistic about it. A one year hiatus is not the same as folding and they announced their decision to step back a year right along with an action plan for how they’re gonna recover. But, god damn is it hard to run one of these groups without a year off. Now they’re gonna try and bring it back after missing 3 of the last 4 years. That’s tough, and it hits right in the soul of the activity cause if it can happen to a group that was near the top of the activity pre-covid, it can happen to anyone.

If this is the end of Vanguard, they’re one of one in the history books. Nothing like em before or ever again.

Nimrod is only ever supposed to be a soft and sweet ballad and PR’13 didn’t do that

So NOOOOOOO they weren’t the best one to do it

Hot Take: Nimrod just ain't it for a competitive drum corps program. The tempo you have to use to *really* do it right is too slow to be viable, the ballad section would take up a third or more of your 12 min show and grind the whole thing to a crawl. The instrumentation and setting of a hornline can be beautiful, but competitive framework means even the best gotta cut corners.

Anime is great. Anime will be like “this is my character of ambiguous western descent. Their name is the most incomprehensible combination of made up sounds. And if not that, it is a name that has not appeared on a single birth certificate since 1773.

Code Geass went and said “most of these character hail from Future Sort-of-Britain, including our main character, who will be named Lelouch just like every single British person isn’t.” Then they decided to distract you from this by naming his love interest Shirley, cornering the market of 80+ year old grandmothers clutching their 3 bowls of strawberry sucker candy in delight. Code Geass didn’t even call it a day here they had one more trick up their sleeve and it was to name the third character in the group Rivalz, a name and a character which appeal to exactly no one.
