A Brief Story Of Us
I really want to marry you.
I didn't think I would feel this way about you.
You were so unexpected.
You were always in the background, a part of the landscape, you were in the corner of my eye for a year.
And then you suddenly decided you would pop up in the picture. You made sure I was in your circle and that you were in mine.
I don’t know when I started to fall in love with you. I’ve always said and thought it was way into journey, like a month after we started dating.
But thinking back, I believe I started falling for you from the very beginning, falling for the simplest and most subtle of things; like the way your shoulders set and how you carried yourself around, like a mountain. Solid. Safe. Defender. Like a warrior willing to go to war for the most innocent soul.
I fell for the deepest of things.
Like how passionate you are about the things that most people take for granted. How passionate you are about the complexity of sound, the quality of image, the variety of flavor, the familiarity of aroma.
Like how knowledgeable you are, how it reflects endless hours of learning. Like how skilled you are, and how it reflects countless hours of training.
You pursued me.
I tried to run away. Mostly because I was scared.
I remember the first time you held my hand. Under the covers so our friends wouldn't see, because you weren't sure, and I wasn't sure. I couldn't believe such a small hand like mine would fit so perfectly in yours so large. I thought you were being reckless, I had a million questions in my mind.
A couple nights later you were telling me I had done something in you. How I had unlocked something. And so my heart started a civil war against itself.
So I made you wait. Because I wanted to wait. Because my head convinced me it was the right move.
I was good for a week. A week that felt like months. I still wasn't sure. My heart was still at war.
I still agreed to get to know you better.
And so it began.
I fell in love with the things that no one saw. The things you kept for yourself, the things you were ashamed of, the things that you were proud of.
I learned to love the things that scared me about you, because you weren't what I dreamed of as a little girl. You were so different, so independent from everything I had grown up around. You were scary, you were a risk. You were the unknown. You were so much more.
And soon you were the only thing I wanted. You were my safest place. My closest friend. My home.
Now I can't imagine my life without you, without your protecting arms, your reassuring smile, your deep, honest, knowing eyes, your rational heart, your passionate mind, your inexhaustible wisdom.
I sometimes doubt how you really feel about me.
Do you still love me after almost a year? Are you still in love with me? Do you still want to spend your life with me like you said on our fist date? Are you just sticking with me for the sake of being faithful?
If we were to be separated in the next couple of months, would we make it through the distance?
I want to say yes. The thought scares me.
I guess what they say is true. Life is an adventure. And we’ll climb mountains if we have to, we’ll sail across the ocean if we have to, we’ll sleep under the stars if we have to, we’ll follow maps and instructions if we have to. And if we get lost, there’s no one I’d rather get lost with than you.
