House of Bellevue: Watch Queer German Ballroom Drama Series with English Subtitles here
House of Bellevue tells the story of Emm, a bi black man who moves from his provincial hometown to Berlin and becomes involved with the local ballroom community, hoping to join Mother Lia's House of Bellevue.
This ensemble show centers on a cast of majority PoC, queer characters, which is still the exception on German TV. It even features a middle-aged, asexual trans woman who gets to have a romance arc!
While many of the actors are newcomers, the cast also includes the iconic Florence Kasumba, known for playing Ayo in Black Panther and other MCU installments.
Since the TV station, ZDF Neo, hardly promoted this show at all, even in Germany most people have probably never heard of it, let alone watched it. Since I like to do a subtitling side project now and then next to my day job, I decided to create English subtitles, which you can find here along with instructions on how to access the episodes.
Please reblog and spread the word so this show gets some much-deserved love! If you're looking for queer media with a found family trope, breathtaking runway performances and, of course, lots of drama, check out House of Bellevue!
PS: If you're a German speaker seeing this, please use the ZDF Mediathek to stream the show to show support for diverse media!
“Even if more adults were willing to ask friends to skip rocks or loll on the couch, our grown-up minds can sap the improvisational fun from these gatherings. To enjoy the rewards of play, you have to take risks, but adults are often too consumed by self-consciousness to run with someone’s silly idea, let alone suggest one. Our desire for playful connection doesn’t disappear after childhood. For some people, it gets redirected to romance. Couples mimic intense childhood friendships by spending free-flowing time together, marking the relationship with symbolic tokens such as rings, and developing a miniature culture, complete with inside jokes and a shared vernacular. But celebrating adult friendships in this way is rarer—and harder.”
— Rhaina Cohen, "What Adults Forget About Friendship" (2023)
Comparing the rotations of objects in the Solar System. Just look at them lol.✨🪐
To everyone that's confused, the planet Venus rotates very very slowly, with a single revolution taking about 243 Earth days, and Mercury rotates slowly, but not as slow as Venus.
i was like "i wish mercury and venus were still animated tho" and then when i opened it to reblog the image was in starting position with mercury's eyes off to the side and i realized they ARE animated. super slow.
the earth's eyes are drawn in a different place every rotation

Cold take but all languages are beautiful actually. Every single one. Every single human language on earth is a collection of stories interwoven into the very fabric of the words that are spoken.
“Oh but this language sounds scary-“ have you heard a child speak it while pointing at a butterfly?
“Oh but this language sounds silly-“ have you heard someone’s grandma recite a recipe with such practiced ease it comes off as poetry?
“Oh but this language is really weird-“ and yours isn’t? Everyone’s language is weird, dumbass, it came free with your fucking humanity.
Every tongue that is spoken is a work of art. Every language a unique window into the world.
Isn’t it wonderful?
the more i learn about the ties between stress and nervous system disregulation and "mental illness" and physical health issues and what things outside talk therapy are therapeutic the more im like. damn many early cultures & indigenous societies had this shit figured out and the modern world is absolutely one big wellbeing shredder
to really boil it down to essentials like ...
childhood trauma is overwhelmingly common
childhood trauma creates long term stress which leads to nervous system disregulation [same source]
nervous system disregulation leads to inflammation in the brain
inflammation in the brain leads to "mental illnesses" like schizophrenia, major depression, and ptsd
these things contribute to stress, ensuring the stress stays chronic as well as the nervous system disregulation, which leads to physical illness and premature death
and then you look at like ...
spending time in green spaces like forests and blue spaces like oceans and rivers are both therapeutic
singing (especially group singing) boosts your immune system, mood, and regulates your nervous system
exercise regulates your nervous system and alleviates "mental illness" symptoms
playing is therapeutic and integrates your emotions and identity even in the face of trauma
and its like. oh okay. as modern cultures we barely have time for and are discouraged from participating in all the things we evolved to thrive with while constantly heaping on the amount of stress we can possibly fit in our day to day lives
and its like well no wonder people love concerts and karaoke and national parks and sports and going to the beach and playing games. these things Literally make us healthier
but also we need to make these things more regular parts of our lives if we're gonna have the endurance to fight rising global capitalism, fascism, and genocide
so my tips for Surviving All This Shit:
go to the park or be around a body of water at least once a week. schedule a time & make it part of your routine
exercise for 20-30 minutes most days, whether its walking around your neighborhood, playing a sport, lifting weights while you watch tv, swimming, etc
sing with your friends. go to local concerts. sing to your pets. sing at religious services. join a choir
play a game at least once a week. obv my recommendation is ttrpgs (anything but d&d 5e, i beg), but this also includes any video game that's not online competitive games against strangers. playing video games for 30 minutes a day but not over 3 hours a day is literally healthy for you
stop looking at traumatic news if youre not going to do anything about it. if you read a news article and then go volunteer, get involved in a community, donate money, or engage in activism, that's awesome!! keep it up. if you read the news regularly and it makes you upset and scared and depressed and then youre too overwhelmed to do anything about it Please Stop For Real you're both not helping the situation and also actively literally killing yourself. find one topic to engage with, find a way to make a difference for that topic, and delete the news app from your phone im being so real right now
read nonfiction by indigenous authors! this is just a general tip but also like. open your mind to other ways of society operating. it was not always like this and does not have to stay this way. if you see a recommendation post on here seriously look at the recs and try to get one from your library. there's a rec list of indigenous nonfiction here and another rec list here for some options that could be good to start with (both very north america focused). you can also search "indigenous nonfiction" in the tumblr search to see what others are reading. i'm currently making my way through braiding sweetgrass and indigenous economics is next on my list
like. we can and will survive this but it's going to be a much harder and longer fight if we're all riddled with so much stress that our bodies and minds break apart. go look at a tree 👍 play a game 👍 sing with your friends 👍 it could literally change your life & the world
THIS IS SUCH GOOD ADVICE this is what I mean when I say “be gayer, take care of yourselves, and read more Terry Pratchett.” Do stuff with groups of people, put yourself in greenery, play games, and do fun shit.
And if you dont have capacity to do activism, following the news/doomscrolling/being miderable is not penance.
If the person youre saving today is yourself, excellent. Rest is essential. One day, if you can, you will find ways you are able to help. If that day doesnt come, you are a person you are society you contribute by being alive and as well as you can manage.
You never need to be miserable. Its not good for you or anyone. We're all better off if you spend that time and energy being happy.
If you can help people, work for a cause, absolutely do so. If you cant, you cant, and thats ok too. Help yourself. Live a good life. Be a friend. It will ripple out.
they should invent a secret second weekend so that you can see friends and do fun things while still having enough time to do errands and sleep in without dying of exhaustion all the time
How do i get into clubbing and just being a foolish young gang. Reading about your shenanigans is always wonderful and i want that for myself
I'm gonna be so honest you just gotta yolo everything
okay here's my actual answer as someone who used to be really introverted and scared of going out
realize that nobody thinks about you as much as you think about yourself and this is a good thing! chill out be weird and do whatever. nobody is actually judging you for more than a few seconds tops because they're all too busy judging themselves.
most people are chatty and want to talk to someone. compliment random people, go with the flow of conversation. you will make friends with strangers if you just yap at enough people.
literally use kindergarten tactics. ooh I like your hair. ooh I like your pins. ooh I listen to that band too. pins, stickers, and merch are conversation starters.
the more people you know and talk to the more random shit you will hear of and be invited to.
at some point just start saying yes to everything you can. if you get invited somewhere you're going. if you get a ticket to something you're going. if someone suggests a side quest you're going. if something that doesn't sound fun is free you're going. worst comes to worst you can (almost) always leave.
go party in places where you don't live if it helps. in college I liked to party at other schools because I felt less self conscious when I knew I wouldn't see those people in class. once you're clubbing it doesn't really matter anymore so go wherever you want.
ask people you know for club recs, or if there's one you've always wanted to go to just go. look for event nights, promotions, holiday parties, etc. these are times where people who don't usually club are more likely to go out.
personally as a broke bitch if there's free entry before a certain time I will be there early and I don't care if it's dead. as long as you're with a friend you can vibe with solo this is a worthwhile investment and gives you a chance to make friends with the dj, bartender, and six other people there early. but if it's your first time and you're anxious wait until it's late enough to get busy.
you can go out with just one other person. you can go out alone (just be safe). it's sooo easy to make friends with drunk people in the club, especially girls. if you're a woman and you compliment another woman in the club, chat for three minutes, and mention you're there alone, there's a really high chance she'll tell you to come hang with her and her friends.
hyperspecific but I don't recommend starting clubbing when it's really cold out. between the outfits and walking and side quests and getting lost af it's better when you're not worried about freezing to death.

bad experiences make good stories

Aromantic Horror is when your best friend in the whole world, that you have spent half of your life by their side, who helped you and you helped with, who lived through your worst and your best and their worst and their best moments always together, who you loved with all your heart through all those years, gets a partner and looks you in the eyes and tells you "I have never had someone that makes me as happy as them" and you just have to sit with the realization that you mean nothing to them and that your love is not "good enough" for them
YEAH! People do not understand that it’s not the lack of romance the problem, it’s how people who seek it are expected to leave behind everyone else for it, because one is more “important” than the other.
Unless you become someone’s romantic partner people will always treat you as number 2, and that fucking sucks

Thinking about it, and I’d like to forward the idea that prejudice against single people (aromantics, asexuals, and also just… anyone who does not have a romantic partner) follows dynamics less like anti-queer bigotry and more akin to anti-fat bigotry.
Fatness, like singlehood, is seen at large as a state of failure. Everybody is supposed to want to be [thin / partnered], and if you are not, that is a personal failure on your part, and you are pathetic and mock-worthy. The popular idea is that of course everybody wants to be [thin / partnered], and everybody is striving towards the goal, and anybody who is not [thin / partnered] is either temporarily inconvenienced on their way to correctness, or has something fundamentally wrong with them. And because [fatness / singlehood] is something that is treated as fixable, if you have not fixed it, then there is something wrong with you—and thus discriminating against you is acceptable, because your [fatness / singlehood] is based on your own bad choices.
The world is, in some cases quite literally, not built for fat or single people. If you are fat or single, the world is much more difficult or expensive to live in, because it is structurally designed for the assumption that you are thin or that you have a partner. The normative Person, after all, is thin and romantically partnered. If you are not thin or not romantically partnered, there is something fundamentally less human about you.
[Fatness / singlehood] is something embarrassing, something worth mocking others over, something that reflects your fundamental unworthiness. Every fictional hero is thin, every fictional happy ending ends with romance. Everyone in your life is either quietly or not-so-quietly worried about you.
And all this is fine and acceptable. Because in the general perception, [fatness / singlehood] is not a real axis of bigotry. It’s a choice! You could just become a different person and stop being [fat / single]! You deserve the mockery, the derision, the attempts to fix you, the world not accommodating you, because you could just become a better person and stop being [fat / single] at any point. So it’s your own fault people treat you badly, really.
official aromantic post :/
gotta be honest I think a REAL juicy dynamic is when someone has a True Love and a Soulmate and they are two different people
see this person is the love of my life I would follow them anywhere every day is brighter for having them in it. and THIS bastard shares a soul with me we'll find each other in every universe and understand each other in ways no other living being could. neither of us are particularly thrilled about this
