“Come in!” Stiles calls when he hears gravel crunching under tires and then car doors slamming outside. He doesn’t bother to even glance over his shoulder when Liam and Scott stomp snow off their boots onto the Wipe Your Paws welcome mat. He’s too busy trying to hang the tacky Happy New Years banner he got at the dollar store. He’s nearly there, wobbling on his tip toes on the creaky ladder that’s seen better days. If he just stretches his arms like that and then somehow makes his fingers a couple inches longer, he’ll have it up.

“Do you need help?”

“Fuck off, Scotty,” Stiles says without heat, tongue caught between his teeth in concentration. “Perfectly capable human right here. I’ve almost got it. I—just…fuck!” With an ill-thought-out lurch forward, Stiles slaps the tape into place on the wall just as the tired ladder overbalances with the movement.
