We talk to writer/poet James Jackson about the work of Leonard Cohen and his album Death of a Ladies’ Man. Check out James’ website here: http://jamesjackson.net.au/
In this episode, we look at Leonard Cohen’s least popular album Death Of A Ladies’ Man, which was his first and last musical collaboration with the infamous Phil Spector.
Fans and critics were divided about its merits, and many felt the pair were mismatched from the outset. The album was also perceived as Cohen’s failed attempt to court mainstream success. This podcast will focus on the tensions between Cohen and Spector, especially during post-production, the album’s commercial performance, and its broader status within Cohen’s esteemed discography. In this episode we look at The Rolling Stones’ controversial album Dirty Work. To this day the album splits fans right down the middle, and passionate defenders are in short supply. During the podcast we will discuss its troubled production, its commercial and critical reception, the tensions between Jagger and Richards, and the status of aging rockers in the 1980’s.
Album originally released: March 24th, 1986.
In part 2 of the Invincible podcast, we continue our discussion of the album’s track listing while exploring some of the outtakes that were ultimately excluded from the final product. In addition, we look at the controversies surrounding the promotion of the record, which led to a feud between Sony’s chairman Tommy Mottola and Jackson shortly after its release, culminating in accusations of racism. The album’s lackluster critical reception will also be addressed.
Album originally released: October 30th, 2001.
