The CGI remaster of Star Trek is like Ecce Mono (Monkey Jesus).
Rather than striving to preserve the original series (though, admittedly, they did that too), CBS & Co. elected to "fix" it. The result is something that makes the VFX shots feel utterly incongruous with the live action shots on numerous levels.
Whereas the live action shots look like a 1960s TV show, the remastered effects look like CGI from the 2000s. It also replaces some of the charming physicality of 1960s futuristic design with the "sleek" futuristic design of the 2000s. Oh, and the color grading and lighting are completely mismatched.
The CGI remaster genuinely looks like Star Trek: Enterprise, and it is just weird to go with a show from the 1960s. I mean, sure, the original effects aren't stunningly remarkable, but they reflect the effort that the artists and artisans of that time put into making this quintessential show with the budget and resources they had available.
All I can say is that I'm glad CBS at least had the decency to include the original versions of the episodes on the Blu-Rays, and that they did scan the original composited footage at a high resolution. That's the way I always watch it.
