Tucked in the corner of every dream, wrapped tight like a hand around my throat, stealing my breath... There he is. A memory that won’t let go
He wakes me up in the middle of the night just like before
I should know better, but- I follow him out into the woods and through the trees, slipping past their rotting limbs. I follow him up a winding road, and around every curve; I follow him until the road ends; Until he turns towards me, and I can see his face twisted in rage
Then and all at once, and with one final sigh, the sky becomes pitch black. As though the moon and all the stars just lost their light. I call to him but he doesn’t answer. In the dark, I try to find my way. Reaching out blindly, I touch his hand; His skin is so cold it burns. I try to pull away but he grabs my wrist, surprising me- And through the darkness that blankets us, I can see his eyes
His bloodshot eyes hold my gaze; I can’t blink, I can’t look away, I am just standing there- stuck. The cold wind sends a chill straight through me; but my body does not tremble, does not shake. I am frozen in place
Still holding my gaze, his mouth curls into a sinister smile. Every bone in my body is begging- screaming at me, Run. Stepping closer, he presses his lips to my ear and whispers, 'You can’t leave.' Inside I shudder, because I know he is right, I can’t even move
Taking another step closer, and without having to lift a finger, he drops me to my knees in the dirt. Standing above me, with his hand wound in my hair, he forces my gaze to meet his. His blood-red eyes cast over me, taunting me, as I will myself to move, to stand up, to run. I try hard to think of a way out, but there is something stopping me that I can't explain -a void that occupies my mind, preventing my every thought. He keeps me there, kneeling in the dirt, with his hand tangled in my hair; that twisted grin never leaving his face
Then like a trick, he suddenly combusts into flames. Searing flames that leap from his skin, reaching for me. 'Don't worry, you're next,' he threatens, but his lips do not move. Waves of heat rush towards me, I try to cough out the smoke filling my lungs -but I struggle even for a single breath. The blazing inferno begins to consume him, blackening his skin, spittng hot ash into my eyes that I can’t blink away.
