The Shadowwalkers is a high fantasy interactive fiction, set in the universe of The Oath of the Landwalker, a multimedia series including a book series, a comic, and the Shadowwalkers interactive fiction. The game is text-based with illustrations sprinkled throughout the work, and features a highly-customisable Main Character, as well as a full set of romantic partners, with alternative routes.
The Shadowwalkers will have a forever-free demo, as well as a forever-free full release with paid optional elements that won’t infringe on the core narrative, or rob the player of the full experience.
The Shadowwalkers takes places in the Oath of the Landwalker universe, on the fringe of the action set in the main book series. Enschka is a large continent, surrounded on all sides by seas, oceans and mountain ranges that keep it away from the rest of the world. Home to six very distinct races, Enschka has been the theatre to a thousand-year war between the traditional and ritual-heavy Ahn’né people of the Dreaming Woods, and the Islander warrior culture of the J’kaï. Each of the remaining four races had to take sides in this sprawling conflict that affects the entire continent.
The people of Enschka wield a power that has many names, but is commonly referred to as The Particles. Each race is able to use and master it in their own ways, and they’ve built their strengths around the Particles. The Ahn’né call it irha, ‘the centre’, and those who become skilled in its use, irhamek, or masters of irha. Fighting in such a long-lasting war has made most of Enschka’s people into warriors and soldiers, and the Ahn’né youth is no exception.
You are an Ahn’né soldier, on your graduation day in the Military Academy of Ahn-Seriel, the capital city of the Dreaming Woods. Born in one of three ethnic groups, you belong to House Haravel, and during your time at the Academy, you showed such incredible skill that you gained the Queen’s Notice, a rare and incredibly high praise. That recognition won you something else, however: a space in the secret Ashto’ïreq Guild, the Guild of the Shadowwalkers.
Now a graduate of the Military Academy of Ahn-Seriel, and a secret member of the Ashto’ïreq, you are sent to the front on the Coast to fight against the J’kaï for the very first time in your life. You will survive, whatever the cost, and help your unit with the unique abilities of your Guild.
Meet your unit, build your squad, train and improve your skills, but remember to take some time to get to know the people you’re fighting alongside of. And if you happen to uncover a conspiracy that seems to span the entire continent of Enschka and run deeper than the secrets of your own Guild, well...
You’re the one in control here. Let’s see what choices you make.
Customise your Main Character
gender: feminine, masculine and gender-neutral traits (human genders aren’t a thing in Enschka, but you’ll be able to pick between he/she/they pronouns, as well as customise things like your gender expression and presentation)
sexuality: your MC can be allosexual or asexual, with all characters still being romanceable and the world acknowledging either choice. Asexual MCs will get one sex scene per LI specifically designed for a sex-positive asexual if they so choose to play as one. Otherwise, the sexual content present for allosexual MCs won’t be present. There is also the possibility of going for an aromantic route with any LI, with access to the allosexual sexual content if you so choose. Finally, your MC can go for a polyamorous route with two specific LIs
personality: choose main personality traits and minor specialisations of those that will influence how you interact with the world and restrict or expand your dialogue options
place in the world: you’ll pick which ethnicity your MC is a part of in the Ahn’né people, who House Haravel is and what its relationship to the other Ahn’né is like, what your stance is on issues of politics and morality specific to the world of Enschka
Get to know your squad
You’ll be able to experience special relationships with the people around you, including five LIs as well as a number of NPCs for you to meet and bond with
Choose your squadmates to fight on the battlefield and get closer to them by talking and training with them to improve your effectiveness during the war
Make decisions on the battlefield, and the squadmates you bring with you as well as your relationship with them will influence the outcome of squirmishes and larger battles
Choose how the story ends
Based on your choices and the time you spent with your squad, you’ll get one of three possible endings (plus a secret, hard-to-obtain fourth option) that will reflect on the time and work you put into getting closer to the people around you, getting to know your enemies and learning more about the world of Enschka by reading the codex entries related to events happening during the story.
The Shadowwalkers has five possible love interests for you to meet and bond with, as well as the possibility to choose a polyamorous relationship, an asexual relationship, or a platonic/aromantic route. You can get more information on the LIs by going to the romance section of the blog.
The Love Interests are:
Olaÿ Erenalui (masculine) || Dreamer
a fellow graduate of the Military Academy, Olaÿ is a prodigy in the use of irha, with a pool of irha so big that the entire particle network of his body is visible underneath his skin. Olaÿ has all it takes to become one of, if not the most powerful irhamek in Ahn’né history. A gentle giant, Olaÿ desperately wants to control his strength, which tends to scare everyone away. It’s up to you to convince him he can count on you and put his fragile trust in your hands.
Olaÿ is canonly asexual. He’s also one of the two people potentially involved in a polyamorous triad with the main character.
Mehetÿl of Ashbloom Domain (feminine) || Sylvain
a soldier in the Queen’s army, who you meet during your first campaign. Mehetÿl has a secret past for you to discover, which is the key to understand why, despite her youth, she’s been put in positions that would normally be exclusive to much older soldiers. Withdrawn and secretive, Mehetÿl has the toughest shell of all LIs to crack, but you’ll be rewarded with a loving LI if you manage to prove yourself worthy of knowing her secrets.
Hé'noür of House Faon'den (gender-neutral) || Sept
Hé'noür is an apprentice under Jora Dil'norr of House Naradrilen, the Companion of Queen Anathÿ’s second child. For the better part of their life, Hé'noür has been learning how to be a healer, and more specifically, how to be a battlefield medic. The Healing Rooms of Ahn-Seriel train both civilian and military healers alike, and provide the latter with the opportunity to work with the Military Academy so that the future soldiers and healers coming out of these training institutions are used to working together before going to war. Hé'noür comes from an old House in the Septentrion, a House that used to produce irha master after irha master. Hé'noür’s decision to become a healer instead was very poorly received by their House, and for the entire duration of their stay in Ahn-Seriel, they’ve been essentially taken off House Faon'den’s records.
Aubiel, child of the Stone (masculine) || Fée
The Fées and the Ahn’né have been allies since the Treaty of Mirka was signed, only 80 turns after the Exodus that brought the Ahn’né to Enschka. No Alliance in the continent is older than the one tying the two people together. Aubiel is one of the soldiers sent to the Dreaming Woods alongside a battalion of Fées as part of said alliance. Since the beginning of the war, Fées soldiers have been sent to the battlefield to support the Ahn’né army; Aubiel has been training all his life to be one of the soldiers sent to fight in the war. Hot-blooded and with an iron will, Aubiel is as impressively stubborn as he is frighteningly competent.
Aubiel is one of the two people potentially involved in a polyamorous triad with the main character.
Sheoril Ashall'dil (feminine) || Dreamer
Sheoril is a hunter. Like many civilians, she’s been selected to join the campaign on the coastal front, for the unique skillset she possess in keeping the Ahn’né army alive and functioning. Hunters and other craftmen like her are taught to use their irha in very specific, highly specialised ways. Sheoril can disappear in any natural environment, follow a track for days, she knows how to freeze food in time so it never spoils. She’s invaluable to a caravan of marching soldiers who has neither time nor skill to provide for their own meals. But Sheoril isn’t an ordinary hunter. Member of an underground Guild, she has her own goals during this mission, and her use of irha might just go against all the rules set in place by the scholar world.
