The world of fashion has been on fire since ‘Vogue’ Magazine used Kim Kardashian and Kanye West for their April 2014 cover. Here are my thoughts…
First, I will start with the positive. Kim looks gorgeous. Her hair and makeup is on point. It’s nice that she changed it up for fashion’s most sacred cover. The photos, shot by Annie Leibovitz, are gorgeously themed with the idea of their upcoming wedding which will reportedly take place this summer in Paris. Kanye looks handsome as well, showing nothing but love for his wife-to-be. And of course, North West is just adorable! She looks like the perfect mix of her two richer-than-life parents.
And now, my overall opinion. Before I begin, I do not want to come down on the cover JUST because it is Kim Kardashian. I love Kim and find her to be a very intelligent business woman. Earning a cover, ESPECIALLY the conver of ‘Vogue’, means that you have accomplished a certain amount of authority not just in the world of fashion, but as a celebrity as a whole. Although the cover and feature was shot beautifully, I do not agree with this at all.
‘Vogue’ Magazine is a fashion institution. Every single one of it’s covers are graced with celebrities with established careers and outstanding accomplishments. For example, Beyoncé (a 17 time Grammy winner), Naomi Campbell (one of the world’s biggest supermodels), Rihanna (the biggest name in pop music)… the list goes on and on. I believe that Kim has accomplished many things in her life as a reality star, however not enough to earn this cover.
Most of the names that have covered Vogue have also impacted the fashion industry in some way. Sarah Jessica Parker, Lady Gaga, Michelle Obama… all style icons. Yes, Kardashian started out as a stylist and wears impeccable clothing, however that took off when Kanye redid her closet (as seen on KUWTK). Yes, she has the “Kardashian Kollection” in Sears with Kourtney and Khloe, but it’s not Barney’s or Bloomingdales. Rumor has it that Kanye West pulled at the strings of Anna Wintour to get Kim on the cover. Although she denies it, I can’t help but wonder. She did have him perform at last year’s MET Gala.
Wintour also swore that she would not support or allow reality television stars on the cover of her magazine. Just because Kanye appears with her, it’s out of the question?
When did we start treating reality stars like they are Academy Award winning performers? You have Amy Adams, a superb oscar nominated actress without a cover. Miranda Kerr, one of the biggest models on and off the runway… no cover. Lupita Nyong’o, 2014′s new IT-girl who should have immediately received a cover. Heidi Klum, another high-accomplished model, no cover? Tyra Banks, Victoria Beckham, Sofia Vergara, all without a ‘Vogue’ cover.
I find the entire spread very hypocritical. All of these months we have heard that Kanye does not want to publicize photos of North and that the couple does not want to call attention to their wedding. However the pictures clearly include North West and Kim in nothing but wedding gowns. Calling for attention? Kim should know better than to publicize yet another marriage after her wedding to Kris Humphries took up two hours of our lives and only lasted 72 days.
In my opinion, and this is just MY opinion, Kim definitely deserves a ‘Vogue’ cover IN THE FUTURE. First of all, it should be without Kanye and without wedding promotion. It should be an editorial spread with Kim Kardashian alone wearing the top designs on the runways. She should develop her own independent clothing line outside of her family. She does have the potential to become the next Victoria Beckham and she does have a closet that every girl wants. Kim, take that opportunity, develop it with Kanye! THEN, cover ‘Vogue’ This just was not her time.
