Okay I’ll address this because I got SO many messages after reblogging that
Snape was a textbook definition self proclaimed ‘Nice Guy’
He wanted Lily to date him but she just wanted to be friends
He wasn’t okay with that, so he makes derogatory comments about her blood status, called her racist slurs and joined a supremacist group that literally kill people of her kind. He was always a pureblood supremacist, but allowed her to be the exception to the rule, essentially saying “You aren’t like those other dirty mudbloods and muggles” Don’t forget, calling someone a mudblood is the wizarding world equivalent of using the n word - he was a racist bigot from the get-go.
He lusted after Lily, but he did not respect her. When she found love and happiness with James, rather than being happy for her he instead selfishly delved deeper into Dark Arts.
Verbal, emotional, mental (and, in the movies, physical) abuse to Harry, an orphan who has also been raised in an abusive home, simply because he looked like and reminded him of his dead childhood enemy.
He then becomes a grown ass man who BULLIES children (remember when Draco cursed Hermione so her teeth grew down to her chin and Snape said he said she looked the same? Causing her, a 14-year-old girl to run away and cry while he smirked and laughed along with Malfoy?? Or the fact that, despite having his parents tortured into insanity by a death eater, the thing Neville feared most in the whole world was Snape??!). Harry coming to Hogwarts should have been Snape’s perfect opportunity to make peace with the past and make up for his horrible treatment of others, not a chance to take out all of his friendzoned frustration and bully a child.
He tries to have Sirius’s soul sucked out by dementors despite knowing he was completely innocent. When he doesn’t get his way, he is frustrated and decides to get Remus (the best teacher the school has seen in years, coincidentally in the position Snape has always wanted but never been granted) fired because of a schoolboy grudge from over a decade ago.
What about when Harry (a 14 year old) is being picked on and isolated in fourth year because of the tournament, and Snape eggs it on?
Snape had glided over to their desk while they were talking. The whole class was now looking around at them; Malfoy took the opportunity to flash POTTER STINKS across the dungeon at Harry.
“Ah… reading magazines under the table as well?” Snape added, snatching up the copy of Witch Weekly. “A further ten points from Gryffindor… oh but of course…” Snape’s black eyes glittered as they fell on Rita Skeeter’s article. “Potter has to keep up with his press cuttings…”
The dungeon rang with the Slytherins’ laughter, and an unpleasant smile curled Snape’s thin mouth. To Harry’s fury, he began to read the article aloud.
“Harry Potter’s Secret Heartache… dear, dear. Potter, what’s ailing you now? ‘A boy like no other, perhaps…’"
Harry could feel his face burning. Snape was pausing at the end of every sentence to allow the Slytherins a hearty laugh. The article sounded ten times worse when read by Snape. Even Hermione was blushing scarlet now.
Snape was not some heroic, pitiable, tormented martyr. He is a petty, merciless bully, with disgusting actions, and so not worthy of Albus’s middle name.
I don’t think his “always” love for Lily is a healthy or real love. If you truly loved a person, would you practically torture their only child for seven years?
When Snape heard the Potters were in danger, Snape asked for Lily to be spared while James and Harry died. When James realised they were in danger, he threw himself in the way in attempt at saving Lily and Harry. Knowing that Lily died to protect her son, you’d think Snape, the man supposedly so in love with her, would at least be decent to that child? Rather than making his already miserable and difficult life more so?
Snape and James were both immature teenagers with a crush on the same girl. They both were rejected, but the difference is in how they each responded. James changed his character and became a better person, Snape remained that same bigoted greaseball and grew up to become an adult who bullied eleven year olds who he was entrusted to educate. He also drastically favours his own (commonly elitist) house, showing preference even to Crabbe and Goyle over actually competent and willing students from Gryffindor.
He showed remorse and regret for his actions ONLY when he suffered consequences. He freely used racial slurs and only apologised when he accidentally said it to Lily, whom he wanted to love him. He cared about the Dark Lord’s decision to go after the Potters only because of Lily, he did not care if James and the baby died. He felt bad about relaying the prophecy only because of Lily’s death, not James’.
He’s a complex and well written, very human character, but not a decent person in my books.
