i'm just imagining, for a while after the Queen's Ball, the Bridgertons keep finding Sophie doing jobs around the house. And at first they try and stop her, but then they realise that it's hard for her to break from her routine straight away.

So maybe they start to join her. Colin and Gregory join her when she's in the kitchens (with a very wary Mrs Wilson watching over them) and attempt to help her cook (they mainly just eat the food).

When Sophie's mending or sewing clothes, Hyacinth and Francesca keep her company. Francesca watches how she sews, and after a while, lends a hand whilst Hyacinth gives her opinion on fabric types and colours.

If she's in the garden, Eloise will often accompany her, either to read aloud from a book they both enjoy or to learn about the different plants they have. When he's visiting from Aubrey House, Anthony will make an appearance in the gardens whenever Sophie is there. The conversation is stilted at first, and the lengthy pauses border on awkward, but after a month or two, they start to find common interests.

Violet does keep Sophie company when she can. However, most of the time, when she (or Mrs Wilson) notices Sophie working, she'll give her children a little nudge to make sure that Sophie isn't by herself.

Yes, and isn't that absolutely wonderful?!

It makes her more relatable to many of us anxious introverts who have always been serious, prone to worrying, cynically yet self-protectively guarded, and resistant to change.

It means that the moments when Sophie IS joyful and carefree feel far more poignant and meaningful.

Sophie hesitating to allow herself to feel and experience pleasure while Benedict is a reforming hedonist who indulged in too many of life's sensory, temporary pleasures at the expense of substance, depth and dealing with reality is one of many reasons that Benophie are so complementary and perfect together.

Being overly cautious, anxiety-driven and joy-deficient is a much more realistic response to her childhood trauma and current circumstances than "sunny" (Julia Quinn uses that adjective frequently!) Book Sophie was allowed to exhibit.

Making Sophie more somber initially not only gives her more of an arc as she learns to let herself be happy and open herself up to change and new experiences, but it makes her distinct from her altar ego, The Lady in Silver. The whole point of The Lady in Silver is that it allows Sophie to be someone significantly different from who she'd always been - not just by posing as someone who had greater status and freedom and a nicer dress, but someone who was HAPPY. And allowing herself to playact someone so joyful showed her that her real self was capable of feeling that way too. Plus, as people smarter than I am pointed out, Benedict's arc revolves around realizing that he wants something deep and meaningful and complicated and sometimes difficult but entirely real with layered, serious, secretive and harder to truly know Sophie rather than just an easy, pleasurable fantasy with the seemingly perfect Lady in Silver.

Confession time: While reading the series, I was in the camp who felt that the more perky princess Book Sophie came across as too perfect to be a multidimensional, relatable and realistic character. But the show compelled me to do a total 180, pivoting from "eh, she's as Mary Sue-ish as people claim" to "wow, she's not only among the most layered characters of the entire series but one of my favorite female characters ever!" No longer a perky princess, Show Sophie is allowed to be somber, cautious, secretive, too repressed to be honest with herself (let alone others!), and so phobic of change that she can come across as passive and remains "stuck" in sub-mediocre circumstances rather than proactively seizing control of her own life and being brave enough to change it. It makes her more relatable and more interesting - and makes her ultimate 'happy ending' vastly more rewarding!

Prompt: Sophie has realised that Benedict’s hugs have calming properties. So now whenever she is anxious about something she goes to Benedict for a hug because she knows it'll immediately calm her down. Benedict of course is more than happy to oblige.

It's an inevitably that they'll run into Araminta and Rosamund.

At balls and other events in the ton. It's the price she has to pay for wanting to be apart of society. As trepidatious as she is, she doesn't want to have to make Benedict's family - their family - make their excuses for missing everything.

So she stands there, trying not to watch her stepmother and stepsister across the ballroom.

Lord Stotter's abandonment of their engagement has just about ruined Rosamund's prospects, and Sophie truly feels for her; feels bad that Araminta's actions have affected Rosamund's life. She knows Posy feels less bad ("That's what she gets for acting like an utter cow. Ha! Utter cow. I'm so clever sometimes."), but Sophie can't help.

A warm hand settles on her hip, rubbing in a comforting circle, and she feels her tension melt just a little.

"Are you alright?"

Her husband's voice. Concerned, but steady. Steadying.

She knows every inch of this man, inside and out. More than she knows herself, she sometimes feels.

Benedict Bridgerton and his good humor and his passion and his sweetness and sensuality. The way he makes a silly face when he knows he's in a mild bit of trouble. The way his expression softens at the sight of her entering the room. The way he switches tones and temperaments depending on who is in the room with him.

They way that when it's just the two of them, Benedict is always nothing but his unfiltered self, and how much she loves that. Loves him.

The way her stepmother has absolutely loathed the fact that Sophie is the one who married him; hates their love. Hates Sophie.

She finds herself gravitating into him, pressing in against his side, letting his arms envelope her into an embrace. It's not something they're supposed to do in public; at balls. But she can't seem to help herself.

The smell of grassy linseed oil from his paints and citrus from his cologne permeates her senses and she nuzzles in a little closer, letting his presence ease her anxiety.

"Do not worry," he mutters into her hair. "They will have to get through me to get through you."

Sophie closes her eyes and grips onto him a little tighter.

And Anthony is totally flumoxed. It's been 10+ years since his own mother has been that level of motherly toward him. And like. He wants to resist, but also doesn't? And she offers him hugs way more often than necessary and just folds him into her little family. So much smaller than the Bridgertons, but still big on affection and support.
