ADHD: Non Drug Approach and Treatments
In the US 11-15% of kids 4-17 years of age are diagnosed with ADHD (CDC and American Psychiatric Association). The majority of these kids will be treated with pharmaceuticals. But in France only 3% of kids are diagnosed with ADHD and only 0.5% of them are medicated.
There are a few reasons for the discrepancy. ADHD, according to the APA is widely over diagnosed in the US due to the influence of the pharmaceutical industry. While ADHD is viewed as a pathological chemical imbalance in the US, in France it is seen as a sociological and behavioral issue. Psychiatrists in France look to the child’s diet for nutrient deficiencies, excesses, irritants, and allergens that can affect behavior. They also look at social structure, boundaries, and family dynamics as part of the treatment. Meds are used as a last resort.
If your child is experiencing ADHD or ADHD like symptoms, pharmaceuticals are not the only treatment option. Diet changes, adrenal support, homeopathy, and social and emotional support should also be assessed and considered.
