Clint made an odd squawking noise as he jumped and turned around to see Natasha sitting there. He put a hand to his chest and he could feel his heart hammering.

“Hey, Nat! How,” he blew out a breath, “How are you? What? You? A food thief? Nah. You wouldn’t do that just because no one would suspect you or say anything to your face about it, would you?” he wondered. 

“No, I would not,” Natasha replied evenly.  “Because those are poor reasons to do anything.  I would have a much better motivation than the fear of others.”

She smiled.  “In any case, you do not know for certain that it was I who took your pizza.  It’s rude to make false accusations.”

“My name is Natasha Romanoff. I have amazing hair, can kill you with my feet while I’m doing my makeup and like to steal Clint’s last piece of pizza out of the refrigerator because I’m a suuuper spy and no one will ever suspect me,” Clint grumbled mockingly as he looked at the vacant space where his lunch should be waiting for him.

Coming up silently, Natasha perched on one of the barstools.  She arranged herself comfortably to watch Clint’s complaints, propped her chin on her hand.  

“I do have amazing hair, that’s undeniable.  But, lately, everyone seems to suspect me of food theft, I don’t know what’s gotten into them.”

Clint watched Natasha and fought the urge to back up and away from her. She was close enough to kiss and he wanted to lean forward and take the chance. He listened very carefully when she spoke. Before he could ask her what she meant by ‘when’, her lips were on his.

He leaned forward, trying to follow her as she drew away. This time, his smile matched hers. “Can we repeat all that to make sure I understood it,” he asked, grinning.

Got him.

Natasha watched Clint’s expression shift, amusement playing around her eyes.  But we mustn’t let him get too confident.

“No,” she replied mildly.  “So you better hope you heard me right.”

She placed her empty mug in the sink and gave him one last smile, then turned and walked out of the kitchen.  Whatever came of this, she was sure it would be fun.

Wednesday’s knife lowered slightly in disappointment when her teacher spotted her. She was too exposed. She knew her error without being told. 

Shadows. We live in the shadows. Blend with the light.

When her mentor put her finger to her lips, she felt a sudden shift in their training. Noise had not been her downfall, not this time. Perhaps she was tired of this training and needed another way to teach her.

Very well.

She followed her mentor down the passageway, careful to stay silent as she moved. When she saw her start to climb, she understood. She needed this practice as well because there were sure to be times it would be needed to find and eliminate a target.

She sheathed her knife and followed after the red woman. 

Natasha skimmed lightly across the rooftop, her eyes roving as she sought out the best path.  She kept a small fraction of focus behind her to listen to Wednesday’s muffled sounds of pursuit.  The girl seemed to be coping well with the abrupt change in plan.

Worry snarled another fraction of her focus, and the woman let her thoughts wander to possibilities.  To tell the girl?  But she would be frightened, and fear can lead to mistakes and regret.  To keep the secret?  She would begin to wonder, to question, perhaps to distrust.  Trust is an important thing to keep, but is not the lesson to trust no one?

She would wait, Natasha decided.  Wednesday must be told, for her own safety, but now was not the time.  First, they must disappear.  She increased her pace as she neared the edge of the roof and, at the last possible moment, leapt across the empty space to land on the housetop opposite.  Her knees bent, she tumbled forward, and rolled neatly back to her feet in the shadow of a pergola.  She took a breath and faded back against the wall to watch her student’s advent.

Natasha: Mostly he just frowns a lot.

Natasha: It takes 45 muscles to frown. Be negative. Get ripped.

Clint stared uncomfortably at Natasha for several moments. “Nnnn…” His head twitched from side to side. “Nnnnnn,” he tried again. “Nnnnnnnooooooo,” he said slowly. 

Clint had no idea what to say and instead stood staring at her wide-eyed for a long while.

The prey, startled, frozen, its life flashing before its eyes in the moment before the predator pounced.  This was a moment Natasha relished.

She leaned forward, looking into Clint’s eyes, unblinking, her lips worrisomely near his.  “When I’m dating you,” she breathed slowly.  “You’ll know.”  

Natasha smiled.  

She let the words hang for a brief second, then closed the distance and dropped a light kiss on Clint’s lips.  She drew back and straightened, eyes steady on his.  Smiling again, she repeated, “You’ll know.”

Ariana brought the blade down on his neck. His body was mostly ashes before head head even hit the ground.

She wiped off her blade before she put it back in her sheath and adjusted her jacket to cover it. She looked both ways down the the alley, both street level and above, but didn’t see anyone. She turned and started down the alleyway, ready to resume her night.

Huh.

Natasha remained silent for a long moment, waiting for the pursuant to leave the alley and round the corner.  All of this made a sort of sense, but several oddly shaped pieces remained missing from the puzzle.

After a few minutes passed, she made her way down from the roof as quickly and quietly as she could, and crouched to survey what remained of the body.  Not much at all.  A search through her pockets turned up a stick of gum and a small knife and Natasha almost smiled.  She popped the gum into her mouth and opened the knife, using the blade to scrape a sample of the ash into the now empty wrapper.

That’ll do.

She folded the wrapper into a tidy packet and returned it, and the knife, to her pocket, and rose.  One more puzzle piece pending.  Turning, chewing, she headed for the street.
