Chapters usually contains an opening that sets the scene and a goal, a middle where conflict or challenges develop, and a closing that provides resolution or a ✨cliff-hanger✨ to move the story forward and make your readers keep reading.
so lets use an example from one of my WIPs. 😏
the opening part of one of my chapters (chapter 3) in my current project, starts with when she's just ran away from her abusive relationship and is on the road with her daughter in her back seat. she is scared, high on adrenaline, worried about her daughter, her daughters crying, she's low on gas, everything's panicky.
that's the start. in the start describe how your characters feeling, what situation their in, start the chapter on a high (a high emotional thing), like for example.
are they a maid? if so what's their work situation like?, have they just ran from a horde of zombies, describe everything, describe how their hearts beating, describe how their feret and thumping from running, tell your readers how your characters are doing and build connections and emotions ✒️
for the middle you have the good old conflict 😀
i would hope we know what conflict means.. but if not.. something is happening, or about to happen that stops of happens to your character.
for example, in my WIP, my character after escaping from her abusive household stops at a gas/petrol station. and her abuser pulls up in the parking lot. he followed her, there is a lot of tension, she has to avoid him and make sure he doesn't find her so she can escape, and all she wanted to do was get food for her daughter.
but before this you want to add a calm, make sure there's a calm part before the storm. just chill for a second.
At the core of the chapter is conflict—whether external obstacles or internal struggles—that blocks or challenges the character’s goal. This tension drives action and keeps readers engaged. The chapter shows characters striving, facing setbacks or surprises, and responding emotionally or strategically to the complications. and then write how they resolve it
Effective chapters conclude with a sense of closure or heightened tension.
This might be where the character succeeds or fails at the chapter’s goal, or a cliff-hanger that raises stakes and encourages the reader to continue. 📖
Ideally, the chapter ending transitions smoothly into the next, maintaining story momentum and respecting reader expectations for payoff or suspense
if a chapter ends on a high, the next one must start on a high.
Chapters act as mini-stories within the larger narrative, often following a "funnel" pattern where the character begins with many options that narrow down through conflict to a decisive outcome
Chapters should maintain pacing balance—too long or scattered chapters may lose reader interest, while varied chapter lengths can add rhythm and emphasis to key moments
Using chapter titles or thematic cues can add cohesion and hint at the chapter’s content or mood
Chapters often contain multiple scenes linked by a common goal or setting, enabling deeper exploration of character and plot
expand Dialogue and Character Thoughts
Add Background and Backstory
Use Detailed Descriptions (emotions, settings etc)
Develop Subplots and Secondary Characters
Adjust Pacing and Structure (Slowing down the story pace by dedicating time to build tension or extend the buildup).
Maintain Consistency and Reader Engagement (While making chapters longer, be mindful of maintaining a consistent length and rhythm suitable to your genre. Typical adult fiction chapters work well around 2,000 to 4,000 words, but variation is acceptable if it serves the story and keeps readers hooked without overwhelming or boring them)
PLAN YOUR CHAPTERSSSS DONT JUST GO IN UNPREAPERED
