I was going to try to let this slide, but the subs seem very insistent that I discuss this.  Now that I think about it, I seem to recall Gohan calling Buu âBoo-booâ or something like that in the dub.  No, wait, he said âHey, nice day, isnât it?â at the end of the last episode, probably because they didnât want to get bogged down in this.Â
Suffice to say, thereâs parts of this show that just havenât aged well.  But between Mr. Popo, Master Roshiâs groping underage girls, and that leatherboy who was supposed to fight Trunks in the finale, Gohan calling Buu the âRâ word is pretty easy to overlook.  Â
The purpose of this is supposed to be that Gohan can piss Buu off as he pleases, and Buu canât do anything about it.  Gohan is just beating this guy up at will. Â
But then Buu composes himself, and explains that he knew there was someone strong out there, because he could sense an enormous power in a âfaraway placeâ, during his fight with Gotenks.   When he sensed this, he decided to bide his time until that person arrived, because he knew he would eventually come here.  And it turns out that this was Gohan.
In other words, Buu was just playing the whole time he was fighting Gotenks.  It was something for him to do while he waited for the real challenge posed by Gohan. Â
Buuâs motive is simple: He refuses to accept the existence of anyone stronger than himself.  Everyone else he was fighting was for fun, but he seems to see Gohan as an affront to his very existence.  Not necessarily a threat, though.   He seems quite confident that he can kill Gohan, even though he admits that heâs stronger.
Gohan doesnât see how thatâs possible, but then he senses that Buu is about to blow himself up, so he flies away and grabs Piccolo and the boys on his way to a safe distance.
Iâd be remiss if I didnât include this shot of Piccolo, Trunks, and Goten having a sleepover in Piccoloâs cape.

From what I can gather, what Gohan actually says to Buu in the Japanese text is "usunoro", which literally translates to "you're slow". Japanese doesn't have curse words the same way English does so from what I can interpret, the intention is that Gohan is insulting him by mocking how he's a slowpoke. Either the subs made a really bizarre literal translation (since retard literally means "slow" as well), or they figured Gohan saying a slur would be considered an equivalent way to communicate the insult. Either way, yikes...doesn't really age well.
