I just read somewhere on this site that “Emma Swan is a canonically straight woman.”
That is just… so… ignorant. And, frankly, offensive, especially to people who are still in the closet and those who know what it’s like to be in the closet. Just because we have never seen her share physical intimacies with a woman does not make her canonically straight.
When I was dating men, I was “canonically straight” too. Doesn’t mean I didn’t have romantic feelings for women.
You cannot say that a character (that is, a fictional being) is canonically, 100%, ANY sexuality/romantic orientation. Unless they actually come out in canon and say, “I identify 100% as lesbian/gay/bisexual/pansexual/asexual/straight or any other sexuality/romantic orientation and all other orientations are out of the question”, it is really up to the viewer/reader’s perception of that character.
Sure, you can headcanon Emma as never having had romantic or sexual feelings for a woman, that’s entirely in your right as a viewer and fan. But a large part of this fandom sees something entirely different.
I for one see a female character whose emotional relationships with women are far more intimate and meaningful than her relationships with men. That’s what I see. *shrugs* Yes, it pains greatly me that I’ll probably never see her in a relationship with a woman. Thankfully, the undertones and “what ifs” are much more interesting to me, anyway.
But please do not try to tell me that she is 100% straight. Not when she shares these looks/touches/connections with other women. Just because they aren’t kisses or sex does not mean they invalidate her feelings.
