When I first started playing KCD2, and when I finished the tutorial with Godwin where Hans gets shot — and the game cuts back to "several weeks earlier" to a carefree Hans riding with his mates — I was absolutely sure Hans is going to die by the end of the game. The whole set up was such a classic, cinematic way of foreshadowing an upcoming tragedy (almost a trope by this point) and I hadn't played KCD1, nor did I really know very much about KCD2, except for the fact that it's an RPG that people really seemed to love. So, my first hours of gameplay (before I got spoiled, or rather, read spoilers willingly), were really colored by the fact that I thought the young blonde brat is going to die. It made the narrative feel that much more poignant, because the whole opening sequence/section before Bozhena's hut, just really has this feel of one's youth/innocence (reinforced and maybe even symbolized by the beautiful summer setting) being cut short. And there's the subtle undertone of yearning, dare I say, between Henry and Hans (the lingering glances, etc) that really set up romance between them, if the player chooses to go down that route.

By the time of the siege of Suchdol, when you are in Sigismund's camp making the decision whether to save Samuel or not, it does really feel like the game is telling you: "If you save Samuel, a lot of your friends (Hans included) are going to be dead by the time you make it back to Suchdol." At that point Henry has had the nightmare where both Samuel and Hans dead lie dead on the ground, further playing into the idea that not everyone (especially not Hans) is going to make it out alive. But of course, when I was infiltrating the camp, I already knew Hans was going to live no matter what, but I can't help but think the post-battle cinematic, where you see Hans alive and well, would've felt so much more impactful if I was actually in Henry's shoes and just had to endure until the end of the battle to see who really made it out alive. As much as I love the game and the way it's written, I actually kind of hoped that the decision to either save Samuel or not, would've had a greater impact on the ending of the story (because you really are pressed for time at that point). Personally, whether our guys get to keep the silver or not doesn't really have any emotional effect on me or most of the players, I'd say. We are humans, we care about people. And, well, Hans is the first character really highlighted in the post-battle cinematic and that just goes to show that, in a way, Warhorse built a lot of the suspense of the overarching narrative around the fact that the player doesn't know whether Hans is going to live or not.

There's really no great point to be made in this post. Maybe I just needed a reminder to just sometimes try and not read spoilers.

I'm watching From Prague With Love | Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Unfiltered, with Tom & Luke (I know I'm late to the party) and around the 40-minute mark they start talking about the DLCs for KCD2. Is it just me or is Luke very sus when he says he has no idea clue about the DLCs? Or is this just wishful thinking on my part? I also find it curious that Luke hasn't been streaming much since his move to Prague (I mean, obviously it could be because he's busy with the move, tired or has other jobs lined up), but there was the Rattay festival and everything and he's been suspiciously quiet (and we know Tom was in Prague this week). Haha, maybe this is nothing, but I really wish we had Hans in one of the DLCs in some capacity (and the other characters too). Thoughts, anyone?
