Liverpool Life Drawing-Â Sunday 3rd April
Kazimier lodge. I don't know about this place, I like how cosy it is, and how close to the model we are... But, it's hot, dark and the furniture is uncomfortable. I just don't get into the session like I should. Not a terrible session by any means, but not my favourite. Keep drawing, keep learning!
Liverpool Life Drawing-Â Sunday 20th Marc
Back at Leaf with Arthur this week. Loose and generally having fun. Did not feel compelled to get into measuring or angle finding this week. Arthur moved a lot this time; unlike him in all honesty and I think his shifting around had me shifting from drawing to drawing - save myself from frustration and keep things moving along quickly. Good stuff overall, and always a learning experience. Thanks Frankii!
Liverpool Life Drawing-Â Sunday 6th Marc
Kazimier again this week; missed last session; wasn't too well. I think everyone in the northwest has suffered the same cold I was fully engulfed in! This week I believe we had Georgia; I have a feeling it was her first time modelling; or at least she was new to it. Needed a little direction from John. Saying that, she held the poses well, and one particular pose she held like a trooper. Mixture of approaches, some considered and some really just thrown out from the elbow. No measuring this session. Seems I haven’t gone so tight on measuring and angle finding in some time. Maybe next time? Bottom loose sketches were all one minute each; which I’m particularly pleased with. Warm down sketches are often the best; and I think these are evident of that fact. Until next time…
Liverpool Life Drawing-Â Sunday 7th February
Kazimier this week; in the cosy hut just off of the bar area. John took the reigns this week; Frankii was otherwise disposed. Decent overall; the model had some curves that were exciting to capture; a nice sense of weight, balance and rounded forms. We’ve had a few figures on the leaner side lately; so this weeks model was a pleasant change. Maybe not as prolific as last time, but always enjoyable. No measuring, only angle finding with my pencil; and pretty much only used the wide carpenter pencil on these. Until next time…
Liverpool Life Drawing-Â Sunday 24th January
Back at Leaf! Gavin posed again; he does a fantastic job; holds a pose well; good physique and a brooding face which is pretty great. I will say his hair is distracting; and maybe tying it back in figure would help for more accurate drawing.
No measuring on any of these. A couple of instances finding the angles with my pencil but a bit more freestyle in approach. Felt confident and enjoyed depicting muscle that maybe wasn't visible but helps in understanding form and weight. The last pose would have benefitted from more time, of course - but then again, it works nicely unfinished also!
New York Life Drawing-Â Friday 15th January- Monday 18th
Another adventure abroad! This time a little further out than Copenhagen! I'm still awake, writing this after having got a 7.35pm flight from Newark, I've been up twenty four hours, so not too sure as to what I can convey on here. The tourist spots I tackled, and then there was a stop at Brooklyn and the Chelea area where I was staying. Nedless to say, there wasn't enough time; and maybe I tried to pack in too much - A great experience, and a great place. Maybe I'll get back there soon!?
Various drawings from out and about; there's some food which was all good, I used the Monocle New York guide to help me along. Then I attended the New York Winter Jazz festival; first night I stopped at Le Poison Rouge, followed by Subculture and the following night was at the famous The Bitter End club - all of which were on Bleecker Street. Amazing music all round. Thankful to have attended.
Liverpool Life Drawing-Â Sunday 10th January
First life drawing session of 2016. Welcomed to say the least. Last time was at John's which I haven't managed to add in here; shall rectify that later on today. Last night we were at the Kazimier Garden; a small wooden outhouse; very cosy and compact. A lovely venue and the soundtrack was great - I think this time was down to Frankii’s own selections, not one hundred percent sure on that, mind you. The model Shelli was new to us. Real pro with great bone structure, especially in the shoulders and face; the light took very kindly to her forms, I was sorry to have not taken a moment to do a tonal study. Good session and glad to be back drawing!
Liverpool Life Drawing-Â Sunday 13th November
Last drawing session of the year, and Frankii didn't disappoint. We were upstairs at The Kazimier; a cosy space that was like stepping back in time to the headier era of 20th century Paris; with Eve the model donning elaborate hats, feather boa and set against the ornate furnishings of the bar. To top off the evening, traditional Absinthe was served up along with mince pies and christmas pudding. No measuring on any of these; but overall I'll say some nice drawings were done. Not a bad end to a very productive year of drawing!
Telford's Warehouse-Â Sunday 30thth November
Top left; Costa coffee in Mold. Nothing to say but me documenting a scene.
Remainders are efforts from Telford's Warehouse Open Mic. Good standard of music; and I might say a few good images drawn too. Bottom left three were my favourite. I think her name was Mia; she wore her hair sweeping across her face and heavy eye make up all that more interesting to capture.
London-Â Friday 27 - Saturday 28th November
Travel drawings. More travel, more drawings! Top portion was at Ronnie Scott's in Soho. Queued up at 1am to catch the "Late, Late Show" I didn't catch the band's name, guitarist was the lead I could say that much. Enjoyed some nice cheese and biscuit, and a few Camden Pale in the plush surroundings of the club; nice, smooth jazz taking me deep into the night. Hard to beat that!
Bottom two are from out and about; a wine car boot sale on the left; which was interesting; quick document of that as I made my way into the city centre. Crime scene on the right which I happened upon on my trundles home from Ronnie Scott’s. Initially the van was drawn, then the officers walked into the scene; so I went ahead and quickly jotted them in too. Good result!
Various-Â Saturday 21st November
Travel drawings. One drawing capturing a stretch of of stalls at the Manchester Christmas Market; dsrawn at St Anne's Square. I didn't have much time so had myself a coffee and jotted this down. Plan to pop back soon and do more.
Bottom few are from later in the day; went to see Twelfth Day perform their lovely Folk music. Initially I'd gone in without a sketch book. After the first few songs I had to rush back for my sketch book and capture some of the performance. The girls were taken with my drawings, which is the only real affirmation needed!
Copenhagen-Â Saturday 7th - Monday 9th November
Travel drawings. A better effort than that I'd produced on my trip down to London last month. This time a short weekend trip to Copenhagen. Much, too much to take in for a weekend. I literally scraped the surface.
From top, capturing quintessential architecture lining the canal between Nyhaven and Christianshaven; a delicious coffee and Hindærsnitter at Sweet Treat in Nyhaven which the waitress kindly annotated for me. Follow down through the sites; Botanisk Have exterior, a view from the Round Tower; Christiansbourg Palace.
Saturday and Sunday night was La Fontaine; a tiny, amazing and intimate Jazz club; brimming with people and energy. Saturday had Magnus, Tobias, Anders and Snørre playing some amazing jazz and then Sunday was a free for all jam. A black guy, dapper as hell sat at the drums toking on a fat cigar!
A few drawings from Freetown Christiania; which was like something from a post apocalyptic world; no photographs allowed, but they didn’t mind me being stood there drawing. The air was ripe and everyone was very stoned. Captured a group of guys sat round an old barrel, fire burning away. Their mutterings were barely audible over the spitting, laughing and smoking. Also Wonderland, I guess a kiosk to buy weed from the mezzanine level with a few skate ramps beneath that, looping in and around the thrown together structure. Crazy.
Lastly post dinner roasted chestnuts and red wine with a kind group who invited me into their home for a meal. A Dane, Anne, an Italian, Alessandro and two Brits Marc and Emma(me included) a lovely night - thanks guys!

Life Drawing Liverpool-Â Sunday 25th October
Back at 92 Degrees Coffee last night. Nice setting. There's always a 'Sunday' feeling in there. That closed in, cosy evening wrapped up in front of the TV feeling. Makes for a very chilled out atmosphere; although quite a challenge to not curl up on one of the couches and forget the drawing altogether! This week we had Susie again; great model. Lovely face to draw and A figure that's toned enough to present some interesting angles to play against the natural curves of the female form. Managed to draw her face twice; mid-way up, took all of 5 minutes, then a longer, focused attempt towards the bottom; I'd say about 15 minutes tops. Susie was pleased with her portrait; job well done, I'd say!
Life Drawing Liverpool-Â Sunday 18th October
Golden Square was our venue last night; good vibes in there as usual and wow, a slice of their almond cake - needed an extra coffee to cut through that; The barista was kind enough to sit at the piano and play us through most of the session. Last night I wasn't looking to be precise at all. I think I measure on the reclining pose, mid-way down; pose wasn’t near long enough to actually get to a point of rendering. Warm down sketches along the bottom; these I was particularly pleased with; they seemed to flow out without much consideration!
Life Drawing London; Monocle Kioskafe-Saturday 4th October
No figure drawing this weekend, but did manage a couple of drawings in London. I wanted to do more, but there was little in the way of time sat down; I did however catch some respite at Monocle’s new Kioskafe. Great concept, coffee and magazines/newspapers all housed in one gorgeously designed space. Whilst enjoying my cinnamon pastry and Americano I took out the sketchbook and took in a few points of interest in the store. The striped awning and outdoor seating area was particularly eye catching. I’d have like to of drawn the staff - who were lovely; but my Americano cup was dry and it was time to leave. I don’t know how long the Kioskafe will continue to shower customers in freebies, but I was pleasantly surprised by what they’d thrown into my tote bag - awesome!
Life Drawing Liverpool-Â Sunday 27th September
Drawing at The Well Space again; love that place. No jazz this week, although we had some great ambient electronic music; worked nicely at putting me in a trance like state. Missed last week so expected a bit of rust and the fact there's a cold been doing the rounds I wasn't expecting anything good. We had Rob this week; probably my favourite model. He seems to find ways at placing his limbs in such expressive positions and he has such an impressive ability at holding tight too. He must do some serious training in his spare time, ha ha! Nothing was measured this week. I looked for angles, but this time chose not to use the head to measure which I’d typically do. A few successful studies dotted around the page; lower left is probably my favourite. Nice foreshortening and look at how those hands and feet sit!
Life Drawing Liverpool-Â Sunday 14th September
Productive evening at Golden Square Coffee. We had Arthur, who is particularly good to draw - although quite a challenge; with being in such good shape. Lots of muscle tone, striations to capture, or not capture depending on what you want to achieve. No measuring this week, kept everything pretty loose and had fun with it.
