| trends | BALMAIN AND H&M ANNOUNCE COLLABORATION (may 18th, 2015) Since the appointment of Olivier Rousteing as Creative Director, the Balmain brand has gone from strength to strength. Known for its eye wateringly expensive products, Balmain has become a firm favourite with stars and supermodels such as the Kardashian/Jenners, Jourdan Dunn and Karlie Kloss. The French fashion House was founded in 1946 by Pierre Balmain, and since his death in 1982, has been lead by creative masterminds such as Oscar de la Renta and Christophe Decarnin. When Rousteing took over in 2011, his appointment was met with mixed reviews, mainly due to his age, as he was only 25 at the time. All his doubters were swiftly proven wrong as he produced hit collection after hit collection, attracting legions of fans along the way.
Rousting has proven himself to be the ultimate 21st century designer, completely at ease with the most powerful tool available to brands, social media. His Instagram account has attracted 1.1m followers who love him not only for his designs and cheekbones, but also for his friendships with Rihanna, Kendall and the Kardashian-Wests. Although Balmain and H&M are polar opposites in terms of price and customer, it has been confirmed that Balmain is next in the long list of brands who have signed up to work with the high street giant.
These collaborations have proven themselves to be incredibly successful in the past, always creating huge amounts of press, with the collections consistently flying off the shelves. These collaborations are a great way for high end brands to connect with fans who can’t afford the enormous price tags, but nevertheless love the designs.
Rousteing has managed to turn Balmain into one of the most desirable brands on the planet, and has proved his business savvy once again by creating a collection which we are sure will not only be incredible, but also generate huge amounts of revenue for his brand. H&M will also I'm sure, be looking forward to tapping into the mass amounts of people who love the designs worn by their idols, but whose budgets unfortunately do not stretch to the thousands of pounds demanded by the Brand. Congrats Olivier, we cant wait to see the result of this highly anticipated collection.
Here are a couple of our favourite looks from the Fall 2015 collection:
| trends | LAYERS... (may 6th, 2015) There comes to a point every winter when it seems like the only reasonable coat option is the one that resembles an old lumpy duvet and ends up making you look like the michelin man. The one with the massive hood, and the extreme padding, the kind of coat you would wear to the Antarctic. Warm yes, the most stylish option? Probably not. Over here at The Trend Pear we are self confessed coat addicts, we have leather jackets, denim jackets, suede jackets, duffle coats, trench coats, peacoats, parkas, the list goes on and on. Our issue with the duvet jacket is that it tends to replace all other coats when it comes to wintertime, when actually, there is a simple way in which you can wear all your favourite coats, layer up! And we don't just mean, t-shirt, jumper, jacket. Be inventive, and mix up your fabrics. There is no reason why you cant wear a denim jacket under a leather jacket, or under a suede jacket for that matter. Not only does wearing more layers allow you to create really interesting looks, it also keeps you warm. Leading into the summer months short sleeve blazers are a great way of adding a layer, so here are a selection of our favourites. So leave the duvet at home and layer up!
| trends | A POLISHED WORLD (may 6th, 2015) The Beauty industry has announced that for the first time ever sales of nail polish have exceeded those of lipstick. To be honest it is hardly surprising, like Starbucks there now seems to be a nail bar on every street, and like the coffee giant they offer a dizzying array of options to cater to even the most extreme of nail enthusiasts. A manicure is no longer a simple paint job, now there are top coats, shellac, gel nails, stick ons and nail art to name a few, and thats just the style of the nail itself! Previously the French Manicure was about as adventurous as it got decoration wise, but not anymore - 2014 saw women summing up entire films and stories in 10 chapter segments, with each nail featuring scenes and characters from popular culture. Chanel was early to the nail game launching, back in 1995, but other designers have recently began following suit, with Burberry, Marc Jacobs and Balmain launching their own ranges last year. Even the master of the red sole, Christian Louboutin has created his own, suitably extravagant, very expensive, version and more recently Victoria Beckham has come out with two highly covetable shades (Eleanor has both ha). Smaller designers have also jumped on the nail bandwagon (nailwagon?) with Henry Holland and Sophia Webster teaming up with Elegant Touch and Nail Rock respectively to create quirky stick ons for their customer. There is an economic theory (not words we ever use. ever. but bear with us) called the Lipstick Index which suggests that sales of cosmetics increase during periods of economic hardship, because women craving the latest Chanel bag, but who cant afford the £3000 price tag, will settle for the £30 lipstick. So by offering us nail polish, our favourite designers are allowing us to buy into their worlds for a fraction of the price! Its also been suggested that the reason why people will always buy make up, no matter how little money they have, is because it makes them feel better. That may explain why after 9/11 sales of Estée Lauder products jumped 11%! So there is more to polish sales than meets the nail, its actual connected to a deep psychological craving to feel good about yourself. Here are a couple of our favourite shades.
| trends | THE FASHION TRAINER (may 6th, 2015) Over the last couple of years the “fashion trainer” has become an integral part of every wardrobe, previously used exclusively for sports and working out, the trainers of today are sometimes so special (not to mention expensive) that their owners would never dream of getting sweaty in them, let alone getting them dirty! Lily Allen thrust the trainer into the fashion spotlight by pairing hers with prom dresses, dividing opinion and grabbing headlines. Nike, Adidas and New Balance have been worn by young fashion conscious people for years and as with all young trends, they slowly trickle up into the fashion mainstream. Chanel raised eyebrows by pairing Haute Couture gowns with admittedly equally extravagant embellished trainers, and the next season trainers popped up in collections by Burberry and Dior. Menswear brands have also been experimenting with trainers in multiple different forms, with Bally pairing suits and furs with box fresh white footwear. The reason for the surge in demand for trainers is relatively simple, the are comfortable, they are accessible, and they go with everything. So it makes sense that well known brands are focusing on producing products for this market. Raf Simons and Pharrell Williams have collaborated with Adidas with exceptional results, and the Queen of extravagant footwear, Charlotte Olympia has produced a dazzling and covetable collection of trainers which The Trend Pear are currently lusting after. The fashion trainer is undeniably here to stay and here are a couple of our favourite pairs, just don't wear them to the gym!
CROPPED POLOS AND AVIATORS (may 22nd, 2015) Cropped clothing is a tricky one, it can very easily just look like your clothing is too small.. so for boys, if you want to wear a cropped top, we would recommend wearing high waisted trousers to avoid looking like the Fresh Prince of Bel air. The A-Line skirt has been really popular recently thanks to the new silhouettes being introduced by Nicholas Ghesquière at Louis Vuitton, and has been interpreted by loads of high street brands.
JOIN THE NAVY (may 21st, 2015) Navy is an incredibly versatile colour, it can be warn with everything (yes including black) and looks great in the summer and in the winter. Navy jumpers are a great go to. We have always loved the collaborations between Comme des Garçons and Converse and Max is bringing back the Mandal...
SEEING RED (may 15th, 2015) We are often accused of wearing too much black so we decided it was time to incorporate some colour into our wardrobes, and we chose red. Leather jackets go with everything, they are a great investment as they are totally trans-seasonal and look great all year round.
GARDEN PARTY (may 11th, 2015) We find that Summer can be a lot more complicated to dress for Winter. We love layering, which in the heat can sometimes be a bit of a nuisance. Here, for a garden party in Notting Hill, Max replaced a jumper with a t-shirt which meant that he did not have to sacrifice on layering.
DRINKS PARTY (may 6th, 2015) For Cocktail parties "Smart Casual" is often the dress code which, being an oxymoron, is not very explanatory. Both looks worn to a drinks party hosted by friends of ours were deliberately, but easily, toned down. In Eleanor's case by simply replacing heels with flats, and in Max's case by replacing suit trousers with a pair of jeans.
LEOPARD AND LEATHER (may 6th, 2015) Portobello is one of our favourite places in London; there are delicious restaurants, fun shops and amazing places to grab a coffee or a drink. Portobello is also a great place for people watching as it is always full of different and inspiring characters. For this look Eleanor mixed two of our favourite trends, Leopard and Leather. Leopard is easiest to incorporate into an outfit if the rest of the look is plain, however if you are feeling brave, mixing it up with clashing prints can also also look really cool.
DOUBLE DENIM (may 6th, 2015) Double Denim is a look that always raises a few eyebrows, but when done right, we think it can look pretty cool. Try and make sure your denim is all a slightly different shade to avoid looking too matchy. We went for double denim on a recent shopping trip round Notting Hill.
FRINGE AND FLARES (may 6th, 2015) The 70's have been a huge trend for the last couple of seasons, we have seen countless interpretations of fringing, flares, suede and floppy hats. It is a very easy trend to pull off when used as inspiration but be careful of wearing top to toe 70's pieces to avoid looking over the top.
LUNCH IN WEST LONDON (may 6th, 2015) We love to Brunch, especially when it is sunny and we can sit outside. There are loads of amazing places to eat in London, our favourites for brunch are 202, Raouls and Daysleford Organic. Black on black is always a safe and easy option.
