“I did know what I was doing! It was you, with your infernal whinging in my ears that got us into this mess. You distracted me,” Turlough insisted peevishly, knowing perfectly well he was losing the argument of who started what. “Besides, if I hadn’t done something we probably would have died in some other wretched hole. Look, I’m sure this is the way back.”

"Ah." The Doctor cleared his throat, a prickle of annoyance—or perhaps embarrassment—rising up within him and making his eyes narrow a fraction.  "That’s quite a lengthy way of saying you’re unhappy with our destination, Turlough, don’t you think?" He looked from his companion to the sign again. "And this isn’t simply ‘a library’, it’s a work of art filled with the knowledge of multiple galaxies. Honestly, your requirement was ‘not Earth’ and as you’ve pointed out, we’re not on Earth. Is there just no pleasing you?”

"Ah yes, but it'd hardly matter because no doubt some vile and evil creature lurks within these hallowed halls, and it'd be at your convenience to save the Earth, and its moon, and then promise me another rousing adventure immediately afterwards."

Turlough used the tape still stuck to the paper to stick it to the Doctor's lapel. "Enjoy yourself. I'm staying indoors today."

Turlough cast a long, long side-glance at the Doctor.

"One, we're not even on Earth. We've had the admirable fortune to land in a library-- on Earth's moon. Secondly, this was taped to the outside of the TARDIS. Evidently we have become a prop in a book vendors' romance. Third, do you really know an occasion for every day in existence? Lastly-- of course it's an Earth holiday, and I may have mentioned we're on Earth's moon."

Turlough: Back in my room. With a hot cup of cocoa.

"It’s hardly an order,” the Doctor replied with a frown, holding up his hands almost defensively.  “Alright, alright. You’re right, Turlough, I should not have made it sound like you would be there only as some sort of accessory. You are my friend; I only made the suggestions to help you fit in at the event but evidently I botched it.” He shook his head. “Am I to take it, then, that you’re not interested in going?”

"Doctor," he said tightly, determined to be amiable but his patience wearing thin. "I said I'd go. Stop trying to play cat's cradle with whatever I say and just start walking."

“Thanks and all, but that makes me feel like a low-class escort, so.”

"Turlough, I simply asked that you dress smart and stay by my side during the coronation festivities. You usually lurk near my elbow anyway, I hardly see how asking you to do so officially crosses a line."

Turlough clasped his hands behind his back and glanced at him sidelong, finally breaking down and trying to be amiable. "That was the line. But very well, I'll do what the Doctor orders."

Turlough shot a quick glance at the Doctor that lingered for several seconds. "Well, with the way you usually are I must remind you I specified 'less gloomy'. No more ginger beer for you, Doctor."

The Doctor slowed a bit and shot a withering glare at his friend.  ”Honestly, would it kill you once in a while to act like you’re not miserable?  A bit of fresh air and a walk never hurt anyone, Turlough, least of all you.” He sighed and continued on his way up the hill, talking as he walked along, trying whatever he could to ease Turlough’s mind.

"The Colarans are a peace and fun loving species, there hasn’t been war or strife on this planet for centuries. Just parties and festivals and general merriment. All the time. Personally, I would find it tedious after a while, but not the Colarans.” He finally reached the top of the hill and waited for Turlough to fully catch up before speaking again.

"They are friendly, and very welcoming to travelers such as us, the main thing to remember is to respect their rules and do anything they ask of you. Oh, and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this, but..don’t stare at their third eyes. It’s the only thing that makes them…edgy. " He pointed down into the deep purple valley, where what looked like a few hundred of people were milling around, chatting and laughing.  In the center of the throng was an enormous fire pit, which a few men were attending, while still others were passing out grilled meat to the gatherers surrounding them.  

The Doctor rubbed his hands together and looked at Turlough. “Shall we?After you.”

"Oh I'm not miserable, Doctor," he replied promptly, picking his way through the grass and trying to avoid damp patches. "I'm just raring for a good time. If you brought us to more parties and less impending destruction you'd hear a lot less from me."

He trudged up the incline to arrive at the Doctor's side. True to the Time Lord's word there appeared to be a celebration going on. Well, that was promising enough. He didn't care what the natives looked like so long as arrest and murder wasn't going to happen.

Turlough paused a second before heading down, because he honestly didn't expect the Doctor to wait 'after you' before going full power ahead.
