I’ve been too busy to write my rankings for last season 😩
Maybe I’ll just do a tier list and post that…
I don’t know how many Nami x Vivi people are on tumblr, but for those that are, here are two fics that I was gifted this year that I’d love to see her more traction. They’re both great! 🥰

I just published chapter 1 of my one piece Fanfic, “Castle of the Bloodstained Rock”on AO3!
I wrote it as a gift for StarlineSyd on bluesky as part of a Halloween gift exchange, using her prompts. It is a MiZo fanfic with a slow build romance, smut, and a core mystery that builds into horror. Check it out if that sounds like your thing!

TL;DR - Spring 2023 Anime Ranking
Yesterday I posted my Spring 2023 Anime Ranking, with pictures and a little write-up for my thoughts on each one. You can find the two longer posts here: Part 1, Part 2. This post here is basically the tldr version of that list, divided into loose categories I use to frame the list in my mind while I’m making it.
I’m sure my list is very different from most people’s, so please let me know what you think in the comments! (Be kind, pls?) without further ado, here’s my ranking of the anime I watched for the 2023 Spring Season
Goddamned Perfect Tier or All-time Anime - 10. It nails everything it tries. Instant recommendation material. I would own fanart on my wall.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
Oshi no Ko
Heavenly Delusion
Insomniacs After School
The Ancient Magus' Bride -(S2)
Utterly delightful Tier - Loved it - 9. It nailed most of what it tries and has no glaring flaws. I would generally recommend it, and would put wallpapers of it on my desktop and phone.
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story -(S2)
Dead Mount Death Play
Hell's Paradise
My Clueless First Friend
The Dangers in My Heart
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts
Skip and Loafer
Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage
Mashle
Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World!
Otaku Elf
My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999
Great - Liked it a lot - 8. Nailed at least one important factor and is generally strong across most of what it tries with no glaring flaws. I would recommend it to fans of the genre.
My Home Hero
Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible
World Dai Star
Mahō Shōjo Magical Destroyers
Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion
Good - I enjoyed my time with it, overall - 7. It was either really strong doing one thing I loved, or it was generally solid, with only one or two issues that didn't hurt the overall experience. I might recommend it to fans of the genre who have already watched the better shows.
A Galaxy Next Door -(Cr)
Yuri is My Job! -(Cr)
The Legendary Hero Is Dead! -(Cr)
Decent - I don’t regret my time with it - 6. It either had at least a few good things going for it, big swings in quality, or was inoffensively mid, failing to truly nail any one thing. Probably wouldn’t recommend it.
KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World
My One-Hit Kill Sister
Fine - 5 - It was watchable, but either had major unignorable flaws, or was very mid, failing to make a real mark for itself. I probably won’t remember it long enough to consider recommending it.
28. The Marginal Service
2023 Anime Spring Ranking - Part 2
Ranking numbers 14-1
This is part 2 of my ranking of the anime I watched from the 2023 Spring Season. For Part 1, you can check it out HERE.
14/28 - Mashle
Mashle's got a unique and interesting premise. It's a world where magic is everything, but our protagonist, Mash Burnedead, has zero magic. Instead he relies on crazy superhuman strength to get by, pretending his incredible physical feats are actually magic spells. This weird combo makes for a lot of hilarious situations. It's basically One Punch Man forced to attend Hogwarts and he has an overwhelming love of cream puffs.
The characters are well-developed and likable. Mash is a great protagonist - funny, chill, and oddly relatable - despite the ridiculous physical stuff, like kicking the air to "fly". He's surrounded by a colorful cast of interesting side characters who play off him nicely.
Mashle is freaking hilarious. The humor is sharp and witty. The cream puff bit never gets old, and I crack up when Mash stutters deadpan when nervous.
The action animation is good, though not mind blowing compared to other top shows this season. For me the art style stands out more - the heavy lines and saturated but dark colors work. Love the funky, funny end credits and solid intro music too.
The overall story of Mashle is engaging, though it takes a backseat to the comedy. It's dropped some cool hints about the political stuff happening behind the scenes that I hope get expanded on. The action is fun, feels almost old-school shonen to me.
Overall, Mashle is a stellar comedy/action/fantasy sure to please fans of those genres. It puts a fun spin on shonen. I strongly recommend it for any shonen lover looking for laughs.
13/28 - Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage
"Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage" is a heartwarming and charming anime that provides a delightful watch for fans of the original series. It offers a great way to learn more about Bojji's experiences and growth, as well as the side characters and world of the show. The stories are short yet emotionally impactful, while the beautiful animation and loveable characters enhance the overall experience.
It is true that some stories stand out more than others, and a few feel particularly unimportant. Nevertheless, the worst episodes of the entire season still serve as a solid baseline of “good,” and certain later episodes are truly spectacular and worth the wait. It may have left me craving a proper second season, but these side stories are still highly enjoyable.
If you're a fan of fantasy adventure anime or simply seeking a heartwarming and charming series, first watch the original “Ranking of Kings” and then watch "The Treasure Chest of Courage." I highly recommend it.
12/28 - Skip and Loafer
"Skip and Loafer" is a delightful slice-of-life romantic comedy anime that captures the essence of high school life, friendship, and self-discovery.
I loved the main characters - Mitsumi Iwakura and Sousuke Shima. It is fun to watch Mitsumi getting used to city life after moving to Tokyo from the country, as is the effect she has on Souske, her classmate, and his complex problems. Watching their growth and friendship is rewarding and heartwarming.
The anime's realistic portrayal of high school life, social issues, and relatable characters make it a captivating watch, and it approaches its issues with care and nuance. For instance, the anime is commendable for its sensitive and realistic representation of transgender issues without sensationalizing them through a major side character.
Visually, "Skip and Loafer" stands out with its pastel watercolor-like art style, creating a unique and appealing aesthetic. Additionally, the music complements the show well, and the OP is delightful and fun, with a delightfully animated dance sequence.
Ultimately, the relatable nature of the story, coupled with the beautiful art style, make it an enjoyable watch. With its heartwarming narrative and engaging characters, this anime is one I highly recommend.
11/28 - Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts
Just a quick note, but this covers the placement for the first 12 episodes of the 24 episodes scheduled for the anime.
"Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts" has similarities with both "Ancient Magus Bride" and "Tale of Outcasts.” If you enjoyed those shows, I believe you'll find this one appealing as well. In terms of overall quality, I would rank it just below "Ancient Magus Bride" but above "Tale of Outcasts." I find the characters, watercolor art style, and world-building all captivating and very well done.
While it is beautiful, there is a notable problematic element regarding the age difference between the main character, Sariphi, and the King of Beasts, Leonhart. Sariphi is a young girl, and while the anime never portrays their relationship as sexual, it is reasonable to assume that if their marriage comes to pass and she becomes the Queen of the Beasts, there would be some form of consummation involved. Although it raises concerns, I want to mention that this story is very much like a fairy tale and focuses on emotions and relationships rather than the physical aspect of romance. Sariphi is never sexualized, which helps temper this criticism, and things like having children are spoken of in a future sense.
It's unfortunate that in this show, and many others, I feel the need to contextualize or defend such problematic age gaps. However, I personally don't consider it a serious issue that outweighs the enjoyment I derive from the rest of the story and its overall media. If the age gap is a deal-breaker for you, then you likely have a clear stance on the matter.
For me, this show is incredibly sweet, offering a basic yet sincere sense of romance. It handles themes of social status, class, racism, and world-building quite well, even though it remains within the confines of a fantasy romance fairy tale without delving into intricate details.
The delightful character designs, warm humor, and compelling plot keep me engaged, but it's truly the relationships between the characters that draw me in. It may not be groundbreaking, but it carries messages of inclusion, self-worth, and not judging others based on appearance or class. If this resonates with you, I highly recommend giving it a watch.
10/28 - The Dangers in My Heart
"The Dangers in My Heart" is an anime that grows on you. It took me a bit to warm up to the main character, Kyoutarou, but his cringey behavior reminded me of many kids I knew in middle and high school, including a little bit of myself, if I’m being honest. Anna, on the other hand, is delightfully odd and silly in her own unique way, which comes as a surprise to Kyoutarou as she’s seen as something of a school idol, being a part time model.
I love them both and, as the story progresses, even the characters' flaws become charming.
The humor in the series is warm and comforting, while the romance is delightful and cute. I absolutely loved the character design, the animation is solid, and I really like the OP.
While I enjoyed it from the start, it truly won me over after a few episodes, so I recommend sticking with it and giving it a chance to grow on you.
9/28 - My Clueless First Friend
I can't emphasize enough how much joy "My Clueless First Friend" brought me. Each episode left me with a wide grin on my face, and a warm heart. It's like a ray of sunshine and a spoonful of honey for my soul.
The premise is simple. Our main character, Nishimura, is a girl who faces bullying from her classmates. However, she forms a friendship with a new transfer student named Takada who is well-liked but clueless about social cues.
Whenever Nishimura is targeted by her classmates, Takada's naive and innocent responses turn their insults into compliments, or highlight Nishimura's positive qualities. Witnessing Nishimura's adorable reactions to his kind positivity - like steam coming out of her ears, intense blushing, and hands over her eyes - are absolutely endearing.
The art style and the sweetness of the characters breathe new life into these familiar tropes, making them feel fresh and enjoyable. It also boasts a fantastic ending credits sequence, adding another delightful touch to the overall experience.
This show revolves around kindness and exudes a relentless and big-hearted nature. While it may not be realistic, it excels in everything that truly matters. If you're seeking an anime that lifts your spirits, gives you a warm hug, and puts a smile on your face, I highly recommend "My Clueless First Friend." If it resonates with you, it will leave a lasting impact.
8/28 - Hell's Paradise
"Hell's Paradise" is an absolute visual feast, with a unique artistic style and a compelling vision. I love the chaotic, saturated, colorful, and vibrant wilderness that makes up this island - and especially how the show uses that to communicate how wrong and unsettling its world can be in subtle and sometimes in very overt ways. It's Unique in the field, and I adore that. From the moment the first episode started, I was completely hooked. It ticks all the right boxes for me: a strong premise, memorable characters, a mysterious and intricate world, high-stakes situations, and some of the best music this season. Seriously, if it weren't for "Oshi no Ko," it would have the best opening credits of any show I've seen all year.
The fights, action, and animation in "Hell's Paradise" are all top-notch. I'm eagerly awaiting the next season because I had such a fantastic time watching it.
However, you might be wondering why it dropped to 8th place on my list, especially when it was initially ranked as high as third. Here's the thing: the show consistently delivers a high level of quality, but it hasn't managed to reach the same emotional depth as the shows ranked above it. While I appreciate the characters and how cool or layered they can be, I haven't formed the same strong emotional attachment as I have with other shows’ casts. Don't get me wrong, the characters are still great and the show could arguably be placed as high as fourth place, but this is where I decided to position it.
Another factor contributing to its placement is that, while I loved the mystery and the initial sense of fear the setting evoked, I feel that after some early deaths giving a sense of high-stakes, danger, and even hopelessness, the remaining characters became more capable of handling the challenges this strange world offers outside of the Tensen. I wish the overwhelming sense of unreality, danger, and mystical wrongness had been maintained to a greater extent.
However, I must emphasize that the show is never anything less than great. It maintains its quality throughout, never faltering or becoming mediocre.
I haven't watched "Demon Slayer" yet, but as far as the best Shonen anime of the season goes, "Hell's Paradise" takes the crown. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves stunning visuals, compelling storytelling, and an unforgettable experience.
7/28 - Dead Mount Death Play
"Dead Mount Death Play" is a reverse isekai story that completely surprised me. At first, I thought it would be just another typical isekai anime, but oh boy, was I wrong. I am absolutely in love with this show.
To help you understand why, let me give you an analogy. Imagine the Batman Universe, with its iconic villains, corrupt police, secret societies, and gripping mysteries. Now, picture a world like that, but without Batman - instead, a powerful Necromancer is thrown into the mix. This Necromancer becomes the central protagonist, dealing with various factions, intriguing characters, and countless enigmas. If you approach "Dead Mount Death Play" as if it were a Batman story, I think you'll truly appreciate its vibe.
The characters are captivating, especially the Corpse God, who reveals surprising layers and a sympathetic backstory over time. But it’s not an overly serious show. In fact it is quite self aware and has delightful humor in the sheer silliness of things like a spirit inhabiting a Frankenstein shark plushie, and the wonderfully offbeat side characters like Phantom Solitaire (A much less psychotic version of the joker, imo).
Oh, and don't even get me started on the intro and outro music—they're absolute bangers that add to the overall excitement of the show.
In my opinion, this show is an absolute blast. It may not be highbrow intellectual storytelling, but it embodies the essence of pulp fiction at its peak. If that sounds intriguing to you, I highly recommend giving it a shot. Take a few episodes to let the characters establish themselves, and I'm confident it will win you over.
6/28 - Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story
Hell yeah! Lesbian Mafia Golf! I suppose that’s a little bit of an exaggeration. A lot of the golf in “Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story” is just exaggerated regular golf - only some involving the Mafia. And they are never called Lesbians, and they aren’t shown in a confirmed relationship, even after a time jump - though they spend a suspiciously long amount of time daydreaming about each other, talking about what they love about each other, staring in bedazzled admiration at one another while framed by rainbows…
Fuck it, they are goddamned lesbian-golf-married, your honor!
For real, though, I wish the show had committed instead of sticking to subtext. In general that’s my biggest complaint - it doesn’t go far enough. It’s ridiculous, sure, but it could have been MORE ridiculous. More Mafia. More high stakes and life or death scenarios. More big personality golfers, more golf powers. Especially more lesbian romance. Just more.
That isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy what I got. It is still silly. It is still melodramatic in the best ways, with nonsensical golf-related illness, complicated webs of relationships and surprising parental reveals, etc. It’s still Eve and Aoi being terrific and beautiful together, alongside the fun cast of minor characters.
I love Birdie Wing, but I was hoping for a stronger landing. The show really deserves/could use another season.
It is not for everyone, but it comes highly recommended from me.
5/28 - The Ancient Magus' Bride
I absolutely loved the first season of "Ancient Magus Bride." It captured a blend of fairy tale elements, naturalistic magic, and immersive world-building that resonates with me. It transported me to a time when druidic religions and Celtic mythology held great influence. This second season has a unique twist, resembling a meeting between those ancient themes and the magical school setting seen in many popular franchises, as Chise is invited to attend a magical school, and Elias is invited to be a professor.
I find the characters endearing, particularly the evolving relationship between Elias and Chise. Additionally, the interactions among the students are delightful. Admittedly, some aspects feel less developed compared to the manga, but that's often the case with adaptations. The season begins as a slow burn, gradually building up to some remarkable moments. However, it feels like this first half is primarily setting the stage for future developments. Although significant events occur, the season doesn't reach the heights one might expect by its conclusion.
Nevertheless, I appreciate how the story delves deep into Elias' character. With his ancient, mystical wisdom, he possesses an alien perspective on the world and relationships. His innocence and naivety in understanding human connections, even the concept of friendship, are intriguing. One particularly beautiful and revealing conversation between Elias and Chise takes place on a rooftop, in which they discuss their relationship and what words like husband, wife, and marriage mean, illuminating their complex dynamics. Overall, despite its slow pace, this season is excellent and has raised my expectations for the upcoming second part scheduled for release in the fall.
4/28 - Insomniacs After School
"Insomniacs After School" is an absolute gem. The animation is lovely and it feels like the characters were drawn with great care. I fell in love with the two main characters and their beautifully portrayed friendship to romantic relationship. It feels incredibly genuine and heartwarming to witness their connection, as they navigate a struggle that not many others truly understand. In their shared hardship, they not only find understanding but also a partner to lean on. Insomnia is a serious issue, and this show captures it in a sincere and relatable manner. While it falls under the slice-of-life genre, focusing on interpersonal drama, it does so with exceptional skill and heartfelt storytelling, surpassing other series of the same kind this season. Each episode has held me captivated from beginning to end. I hold this show dear to my heart and wholeheartedly recommend it to others.
3/28 - Heavenly Delusion
Heavenly Delusion is a fascinating anime set in a post-apocalyptic world. The main story revolves around two children, Maru and Kiruko, who are traveling through this harsh and dangerous landscape, looking for particular people from their pasts. Alongside their journey, there is a secondary story that follows a girl named Tokio and a group of strangely super-powered children being raised in an isolated facility.
How and why those two stories connect is kept a mystery for a very long time. The anime presents several such compelling mysteries that kept me hooked until the end.
While the story starts slow, with extensive character and world introduction, it gradually becomes more captivating and intense. The characters in Heavenly Delusion are complex, though it takes time to emotionally connect with them - or it did for me. The real meat is in their interactions with each other, however.
The show can be quite graphic, dark and twisted, handling subjects like dystopia, body horror, character deaths, suicide, and rape - but it takes those subjects seriously. It explores various themes, including gender, personal identity, friendship, sexuality, and how authority figures manipulate and take advantage of those below them.
The animation's style is very reminiscent of the typical post-apocalyptic setting, with strong “The Last of Us” vibes, but the characters and story and how it is told sets it apart. I highly recommend it.
2/28 - Oshi no Ko
The full-length movie that serves as the first episode of this series is my favorite first episode of the entire season, possibly of all time. It showcases some of the best the series has to offer, with sharp criticisms of the entertainment industry, strong and fascinating characters, emotional highs and lows, and fabulous animation, style, and music. The opening credits and song are a feast by themselves.
That being said, it also highlights the show’s biggest flaw, which is the bizarre creepiness inherent in its reincarnation premise. To be honest, this show would have likely been number 1 if it hadn’t included those elements, but it also derives some of its dramatic tension from those elements, so I’m not sure how I’d do it differently.
So does this flaw ultimately bring down the show? No. I mean, I did put it in second place, after all. I struggled with whether or not I should give it first place.
I’m not going to spend more time dissecting it. I don’t want to spoil anyone. This show is a masterpiece. I love it, and I highly recommend it.
1/28 - Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
The cour didn't have enough of the wonderful Sulemio romance for my taste, but what it did feature delighted me. I craved an on-screen kiss and wedding, but must satisfy myself with fanart on that front. At least they're canonically married lesbians - the rings and sister-in-law confirm it! Hallelujah! It makes my heart sing! 🥰
One of the aspects I really enjoyed about Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury is its complexity. The intricacies can be difficult to grasp on initial viewing, but make rewatches rewarding. There are so many subtle details - the factions, allegiances, political maneuvers - that add purpose and depth to the relationships and story. However, I felt the anime was rushed near the end, as if it had to wrap things up prematurely. There was potential for another season to explore the nuanced relationships, politics, and intense Gundam battles in more depth. Overall, I find the show captivating for its intricate plot and complex characters, though I wish there was more time to delve deeper into certain elements.
So many characters grappled with painful struggles, all portrayed effectively. The political maneuvering was intricate and interesting. Quiet Zero lived up to the hype. Interwoven themes addressed personal issues and societal concerns like war, inequality, poor parenting, and self-determination. The Tempest references and parallels provided rich literary depth perfect for analysis. I feel like I could write an essay about it. It should go without saying that the show looks great with solid animation and great designs, and the music is fantastic. The Voice Acting also remains top notch. The ending credits is a masterpiece of music and art. This show made me want to check out more Gundam shows, but please, I need another season!
Why is this show number 1 over Oshi no Ko? Gonna be honest with you here, it mostly comes down to one thing - My girls are happily alive and married at the end. Canonically. Do you know how many queer relationship stories in anime - no, in all media - end happily? Not very many. This show is an absolutely win. Are there things I wish I had more of? Yes. Did I still get more than I had expected? Oh yes, very much. WLW for the win, friends! Sulemio for life!
2023 Anime Spring Ranking - Part 1
Ranking Numbers 28-15.
Straight to the point - Spring was great! Most every season there has been a large chunk of bad or disappointing anime in my watchlist, but this season there’s only one show I’d say was a true dud. There were a few others that were only ok, but the vast majority were highly enjoyable or downright superb.
Ok, let’s start my 2023 Anime Spring Ranking at the very bottom of the list with...
28/28 - The Marginal Service
I should have quit this show sooner than any other show I watched in this season. It had some real promise. It was a Men In Black Style story, with a secret service that interacts with and polices a secretive population hidden amongst the normal human population, such as cryptids and mythical beings, crossed with a primary color team like a super Sentai show. It could have been really interesting and fun, but the writing sucked.
The characters start off with simple personalities, and then go on to have almost no character development. They became one-note very fast. The plots and villains are a bit nonsensical, and it tries to shoehorn in some very heavy themes at the weirdest times.
While it is obvious that they took a lot of well worn tropes and stereotypes, as well as references to popular movies and video games, with the goal of satirizing them, it became really more like a reference fest. They didn't really do anything interesting with any of the references they were making. There were some funny jokes but they were thin quickly because they were the only jokes the show knew how to tell.
The only reason I finish this show is because almost every episode would have one thing that would give me a glimmer of hope that it might start to get better, but then it never fully delivers on it. It's not the worst thing I ever watched, or anything like that, but I wish I had spent my time on a show with more value.
27/28 - My One-Hit Kill Sister
This show has very good animation, appealing character design, fantastic end credits, and the characters and plot can be fun, if simple. This show reminds me of a lot of popcorn. Specifically, unsalted popcorn. It doesn't taste bad, but it is bland. It provides nothing of value, either through nutrition or through being filling, but I typically enjoy it while I'm eating it. It is a simple snack but it could never replace a real meal. Oh, and occasionally you run across a hard kernel that never popped, and just sort of brings the experience down a little bit. In this analogy, that un-popped kernel is the heavy incest overtones. Make no bones about it, the titular sister of this show wants to get her brother in bed. If you find that particular element especially rank, I would avoid this show. The rest is not good enough to warrant putting yourself through it.
26/28 - KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World
This show is absolutely unhinged. It is bizarre on so many levels. It is both terrific and contemptible. It is an isekai in which the main character, Yukito Urabe, is the heir to a cult leader who drowns during a ritual gone wrong. He wishes to be reborn in a world without gods or religion, and is transported to another world where gods and religions do not exist. This world is a dystopian place, full of people who live out meager lives, and there are terrible truths and secrets to uncover. The God Who brought Yukito to this world, Mitama, helps him overcome the challenges of this world in exchange for him rebuilding a religion and following.
I'm sure you're thinking, that's interesting, but what's so unhinged about that? Well, this show is full of the wildest swings in animation quality with CGI so bad that I can't help but feel that it is intentional and meant to make fun of CGI in anime, but not as wild as its swings and tone. It will unironically go back and forth between horrific executions by hanging and weird sex jokes. The pacing is utterly bizarre. It has the most sexually deviant characters, the most bizarre logic, the most ridiculous plots, conflicts, and resolutions that I think I have ever seen.
It's hard to explain, but the main character wakes up in the new world to a handjob from Aruraru, one of the main female characters. The main character's best friend, Roy, seems normal at first glance, but is revealed to be an absolutely depraved sex pest, not glorified, but definitely more of a joke than a critique. One of the major arcs of the show involves defeating a goddess of lust and sex by upstaging her with a competing sex cult.
The utter Ridiculousness and depravity of this show is both the biggest reason nobody should watch it, and it's biggest selling point. I cannot lie, I had fun watching this show. I found it funny. Despite everything, the characters can be interesting and complex, and yet I cannot recommend it to a single soul. If this sounds interesting to you proceed with caution, my fellow deviant, and Godspeed.
25/28 - The Legendary Hero Is Dead!
This show might have had my favorite opening song and credits of any show if it was not for “Oshi no Ko.” It slaps. It is a banger. It is better than this show deserves.
Look, this thing is pretty trashy. There is no getting around that. I believe it is important to note that the show has problematic elements, and certainly objectifies women, though the focus on sexy thighs over breasts and butts is weirdly refreshing. If that sort of humor is a deal-breaker for you, then I think you already know that you don't want to watch this show.
That isn't to say that I did not enjoy this show. Despite its flaws, of which there are many, I did enjoy my time with this show quite a bit. The show is a fantasy anime with humor that is, while often crude and over-the-top, also very funny. The characters are all likable and have their own unique idiosyncrasies. The animation is solid, especially in certain fight scenes, or in fanservice scenes. I like the way mana works in this story, and the powers that the legendary sword gives the main character are interesting and fun. On top of all that, the main character actually has some interesting growth and change.
Overall, I would give a very mild recommendation for "The Legendary Hero Is Dead!" to anyone looking for a funny and ridiculous fantasy comedy.
24/28 - Yuri is My Job!
Despite having Yuri in the title, I didn’t get enough Yuri out of the show. It's not that the elements of Yuri romance aren't there. They are, and they grow more present as the show progresses. It's more that the focus of the show for this first season is more on the personalities, character flaws, and interpersonal drama of the cast rather than so much on romantic relationships.
Your mileage will vary with these characters. They all start out as pretty unlikable, and while that is mitigated to some degree as their characters are explored, it never fully goes away. These are very flawed individuals. None of them communicate well. They can all be brusque or manipulative to some degree. I get the sense that this series is very much a slow burn, although I would have to hear from a manga reader to confirm or deny that.
I have mixed opinions on the main character, Hime. She has a complex and flawed personality, with interesting character development throughout the series. At the same time, she is annoying and hypocritical, and needs to learn to be more honest with herself and others. This is a lesson she has not really learned by the end of the first season, and that is great if we get more seasons, but very unsatisfying if we do not.
The animation quality, the voice acting, and the music of the show are all quite good, and the supporting characters, such as Mai, Kanoko, Nene, and Youko, add more depth and humor to the story.
I do hope we get a second season, if for no other reason than that I root for Yuri anime in general, and from what I've heard the romance becomes a bigger and bigger part of the story as we go on. It's hard to recommend the first season now because I do not find it very satisfying, but I do think that it is a strong start that could become something special. We just really need to see some characters become more likable as they overcome their personality flaws.
23/28 - A Galaxy Next Door
This was a cute anime. It was very calm. Not much “happened,” per se, And I think that many viewers would find the characters and plot a bit bland. I think that's an understandable criticism, but I appreciate this style and pace as an alternative to the more chaotic rom-coms.
The characters felt older than most of the leads in other romance anime lately, both in their appearance and actions, which provided a nice change of pace.
I like how the show starts with a forced pairing due to strange/supernatural elements, but then the characters intentionally reject it so that they can love each other genuinely. I found the question about their initial supernatural bond - that is, are they really in love or is this just a side effect of the bond - to be decently compelling.
It was always a pleasant watch, though it also didn’t set up shop in my heart like other shows do. I sorta want to compare it to water. It’s cool, refreshing, and nice, but you’re unlikely to hear anybody say it’s their favorite drink, or that they’re craving the flavor.
22/28 - Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion
Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion is an interesting combination of the isekai and romance genres. It tells the story of a modern-day woman who is reincarnated as Raeliana McMillan, a minor character in her favorite novel. Raeliana's death is the inciting incident that sets the novel's plot into motion. To avoid her fate, Raeliana uses her knowledge of the story's events and characters to become engaged to the powerful Duke Noah Wynknight.
Raeliana is a compelling protagonist, and she has delightful chemistry with Noah. Their banter and romantic tension are highlights of the show. Raeliana and Noah are by far the most fleshed out characters, while the supporting cast remains underdeveloped. However, several side characters, particularly Raeliana's bodyguard, show promise for further exploration should the series continue.
The narrative contains intriguing mystery elements, with some episodes capitalizing on the intrigue better than others. Overall, the mysteries are engaging, and many questions remain for potential future seasons to address. At times, the balance between mystery and slice-of-life elements is uneven, resulting in occasional dull episodes.
The animation quality is strong during pivotal scenes but dips noticeably in places, likely due to budget limitations. For example, background characters are sometimes rendered with grayed-out faces or as simple silhouettes even when alone on screen. However, the primarily character designs are great, the music complements the story well, and the voice acting is top-notch.
Overall, Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion is a worthwhile romance anime despite some unevenness in quality. I enjoyed the series and look forward to potential future seasons expanding on the characters and story. For fans of romantic anime, “Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion” is a solid recommendation.
21/28 - Mahō Shōjo Magical Destroyers
“Mahō Shōjo Magical Destroyers” is an action fantasy anime about a group of otaku rebels fighting against a government agency trying to eliminate otaku culture. They are aided by three magical girls with their own motivations, led by Otaku Hero, a simple guy who just wants to be able to love what he loves.
The production values are strong, with excellent voice acting, and dynamic Trigger-esque animation during action scenes. Visuals can be surreal and psychedelic, including bizarre imagery hinting at hidden truths. The discordant, unsettling music complements the trippy visuals.
The characters both satirize and empathize with otaku culture, referencing tropes and cliches while sometimes indulging in fan service. However, these elements seem purposeful rather than gratuitous. The show could spark insightful conversations, as its multilayered commentary on otaku culture invites multiple interpretations.
For me, the cynical, tragic tone and open-ended finale were a bit off-putting and I never built a real emotional connection with it. However, the surrealism and thematic depth may deeply resonate with certain viewers. Fans of Studio Trigger's style may be most likely to appreciate Mahō Shōjo Magical Destroyers, though pinpointing the target audience is difficult.
Ultimately, I found the anime thought-provoking but not personally enjoyable. Those looking for meaningful yet bizarre commentary on otaku culture may find Mahō Shōjo Magical Destroyers to be right up their alley.
20/28 - World Dai Star
“World Dai Star” is an idol anime centered on theater acting rather than singing. As someone not typically drawn to idol shows, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this series. Though it incorporates supernatural elements through abilities that enhance the characters' acting, it evoked nostalgia for my own acting days in college.
The cast features endearing personalities with unique quirks as they strive to become better performers and nurture friendly and competitive relationships. The plot follows a simple goal - becoming a top-tier actor, known as a World Dai Star.
The show does a great job of making the acting that takes place on the stage feel real, and just a little bit magical. It seems clear to me that the creators behind the show have a real passion for theater. The voice acting and direction admirably convey engrossing stage performances, but above all else notable care clearly went into the animation during acting sequences, with fluidity and detail amplifying each scene. The entire show is pretty, but when it is focusing on the characters in the middle of an acting sequence the animation uptick makes the show’s characters become more real - elevated. It was an excellent creative decision.
For those interested in idol shows, backstage stories, theater appreciation, or earnest character growth, World Dai Star comes highly recommended. With heart and polished execution, World Dai Star stands out as a delightful ode to acting.
19/28 - Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible
I gotta make a scatter plot graph at some point for all the high school rom-com anime similar to "Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible." There's a sliding scale of teasing/extroversion and a comedy scale where you could plot "Komi Can't Communicate," "Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro," "Aharen Is Indecipherable," "Shikimori's Not Just A Cutie," and others.
"Kubo" is dead center on this hypothetical graph. Kubo herself only mildly teases the main guy, and the comedy isn't as prominent as those other shows. Strictly in those two ways, it's hard to compare Kubo to the rest - it doesn't quite stand out.
But it's still super cute, warmly funny, and I dig the character dynamics both as a romantic pairing and between them and their families.
The animation is simple but totally fine for the genre. The character designs are adorable, and the joke about the main guy being so average he's literally invisible never gets old even though they reuse it a bunch.
If you like any of those other rom-coms, you'll probably enjoy this one. I certainly had a good time with it. However, if you tend to bounce off this genre, I'm not sure what sets Kubo apart enough to sell you on it. It hits the usual beats.
So in summary, while it doesn't distinguish itself much from its peers, "Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible" is a solid, feel-good rom-com worth checking out for fans of the genre. Just don't expect it to revolutionize the formula.
18/28 - My Home Hero
It feels like there's only 5 or 6 types of anime stories that get made these days. Thankfully "My Home Hero" is a real breath of fresh air. It's a thriller centered on Tetsuo Tosu, a regular middle-aged salaryman who accidentally kills a yakuza member’s son trying to save his oblivious daughter. This drags Tetsuo into a desperate game of cat and mouse as he attempts to cover up the crime and convince the yakuza he's innocent to protect his family.
The animation's nothing special but gets the job done. The music is very good though. Most importantly, the writing is great, with complex, flawed, intelligent characters and tons of tension that gets released just enough to stay engaging.
If you want something different and like thrillers, "My Home Hero" is easy to recommend. Also, Tetsuo's wife Kasen rules - a real ride-or-die life partner!
Overall, this thriller anime brings a welcome breath of fresh air from the usual. Tense, smart, and driven by great characters, "My Home Hero" is an easy call for thriller fans or for any anime fan aching for something new.
17/28 - My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999
The characters in "My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999" are super well-developed, and the chemistry between the leads is totally undeniable. Akane's a strong, independent woman determined to move past her breakup, while Yamada's a kind, gentle dude slowly learning to open up, though I wish we got more insight into him. Hopefully future seasons show more of that. The supporting cast is also fleshed out nicely, and their relationships with the main two add good depth.
The story itself is sweet, funny, and heartwarming. The show balances humor and drama well, keeping an upbeat, optimistic vibe. Plenty of heartwarming moments, and watching the characters journey toward love is relatable and hilarious.
The animation is just gorgeous, and the soundtrack is catchy as hell. Visually it's a delight, with beautiful character designs and backgrounds. And the music adds to the overall feel.
The video game/guild stuff was neat but didn't seem too important. Feel like they could've done more there, but its absence doesn't really hurt either.
Sure, the story can be predictable at times. But that doesn't take away from the enjoyment 'cause the characters are so strong and the story's so heartwarming. It's easy to overlook any flaws.
Overall, with endearing characters, a sweet romance, and top-notch production values, "My Love Story" is an easy recommendation for romance fans seeking a feel-good time. Minor issues can't detract from its biggest strengths.
16/28 - Otaku Elf
The characters in Otaku Elf are super charming and relatable. Elda's a centuries-old elf obsessed with games and figurines, while Koito's a teenage shrine maiden tasked with taking care of her. Despite their different personalities, the two quickly become friends bonding through their time spent together at the shrine and around town.
The story is funny and heartwarming. As a slice-of-life anime, there's no overarching plot. But the episodes are full of hilarious and touching moments as Elda and Koito learn more about each other.
Visually, the anime is appealing and cute. The animation is bright and colorful, the designs are great, and it features some pretty scenery of the town around the shrine. The bouncy, fun intro song rules too - I love the part where the two lead a small army of Elda’s frog tank figures into battle against one another.
Otaku Elf also works as a nice intro to Japanese culture, with some history and religion like the Edo period and Shintoism. It makes it easy to learn a bit more about Japan even if you're unfamiliar.
At times it was a little too slow for my taste, and some of the educational bits in certain episodes felt a bit overdone, but I never got tired of Elda and Koito's friendship. I give Otaku Elf a solid recommendation for anyone who likes soothing slice of life with humor and cute art and characters.
15/28 - Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World!
“Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World!” was my first peek into its universe, but man it made me wanna dive right in and explore the whole thing. Being a prequel, it seemed like an easy jumping on point, and I never felt lost from not knowing the full lore.
The humor is top-notch hilarious. I laughed out loud hard at the joke about killing that duck creature, but really it was great throughout.
The characters are delightful - funny, flawed, and layered. Megumin is so confident and narcissistic, or at least acts that way. But you can tell she really just wants to be seen as cool and valued. Yunyun, her "rival" who's also her awkward but sweet friend, has big ambitions that get overshadowed by how shy she can be. Yunyun is a total cinnamon roll and the best!
The plot follows Megumin and Yunyun's early adventures tryin' to become powerful mages. It's more focused on the characters and humor than an overarching story, and that works great.
The animation, designs, music - all top-notch. Killer production value all around.
Had a blast with the laughs and fell for these goofy gals. It’s an easy high recommendation for fantasy comedy fans, especially if you're into Konosuba. This prequel got me hooked! That's it for the first half of my list! For Part 2, just follow this link HERE.
So strong!
