I was thinking about it the other day I realized Zuko had the greatest connection with Sokka out of all the members of Team Avatar. It amazed me in “The Boiling Rock” episodes how well they worked together and what a great team they made. They were both skilled fighters without using bending; both being excellent swordsmen. They each became leaders of their respective lands, Zuko becoming Firelord and Sokka becoming Chief of the Southern Water Tribe.

When Tenzin said that Zuko and Sokka were part of the team that stopped the Red Lotus initially from abducting Korra, it made me think about how great it would of been to see them work together in their old age.

My favourite thing about this, is that he goes back to his father, and holds him accountable for his actions. He’s thought he was in the wrong for years. That it was his fault he lost his honour. To see him come to this understanding that he was a child and his father was the responsible party was amazing.

I can’t even think of any other animated kids shows where the abuser is called out on their abuse as openly and directly as he was in this show. And don’t even start me on the importance of them showing that a male child can be the victim of abuse by a male parent. That’s a demographic that so often gets brushed aside and they get told to “man up” or in this case “act like a Prince”. And Zuko gets to stand up and say “I AM a Prince. You’re the one who was wrong”.

This scene still breaks my heart each and every single time I watch it.

Azula was a terrible, horrible person. She would have set the world aflame and laughed over the broken carcass of her brother.

But she was fourteen.

She was so ruined and twisted by her childhood and by her nation, driven to insanity by the expectations placed upon her.

Azula was bad and yet I can’t help but feel so terribly sorry for her.

actually, i think one of the shows strengths is that they didn’t shy away from what a horrible tragedy this was. even though she was clearly a villain and did unspeakably awful things, this scene was still framed as sad. there was no celebrating- they just look at her sadly.

the music for the battle that leads up to this moment is sad too- it’s an epic battle, visually probably one of the biggest things done in the entire series, and they could have played it with thumping, energetic, dangerous music. but instead it’s quiet and somber. because the whole scenario is heartbreaking, and they know it.

i think the fact that a kid’s show had so much respect for it’s viewers and their ability to understand the complexity of this situation is what makes avatar great.
